Chapter 17 - The Shadows of Aethelgard

At 2:00 AM, inside the dimly lit library of the Sterling Estate, Elena sat surrounded by decades of encrypted family archives.

Her eyes were bloodshot, but her mind was operating at maximum processing speed. Dr. Aris Thorne sat across from her, his fingers flying across a military-grade laptop, while David Croft reviewed dusty corporate ledgers.

"Charles was smart," David said, tossing a folder onto the table. "He quietly bought up diluted shares from former board members through five front companies in Panama over the last six years. Together with his own equity, he controls forty-four percent of Aethelgard's voting shares."

"My father held forty-eight percent," Elena said tightly. "And the remaining eight percent is split among minor independent shareholders."

"If Charles convinces just four percent of those independent shareholders that you are 'emotionally unfit' to lead due to your father's sudden illness, he hits fifty-two percent," Dr. Aris warned. "He executes the takeover at 8:00 AM."

Elena stood up, walking over to her father’s antique mahogany desk. She stared at a framed photograph of her and Arthur taken when she was six years old, sitting on the porch of their original family home.

“If you ever find yourself surrounded by wolves, El,” her father’s voice echoed in her memory, “don't try to reason with them. Find the pack leader's leash.”

Elena opened the bottom drawer of the desk. It required a fingerprint scan and a seven-digit passcode. The heavy steel drawer slid open with a soft hiss.

Inside was a single, velvet-bound ledger marked: PROJECT NEMESIS.

Elena opened the book. Pages of handwritten notes in Arthur’s distinctive penmanship filled the paper. Arthur hadn't been blind to his brother’s greed. He had known for twenty years that Charles was a venomous snake in his grass.

"My God..." Elena breathed, her eyes scanning the financial trails detailed in the ledger.

"What is it, Elena?" David asked, leaning forward.

"Charles didn't just buy Panama shell companies," Elena said, her voice filled with quiet shock. "He’s been laundering money for a cartel-backed European private equity fund through Thorne International. He was the secret partner who funded Victor Thorne’s cyber-attack on our Tokyo property."

Dr. Aris gasped. "That means Charles committed treason against his own family corporation! That's a class-one federal felony!"

"It gets worse," Elena continued, turning a page. "Arthur knew everything. He was letting Charles dig his own grave, waiting for Charles to make the final move so he could lock him away forever. But Dad's stroke happened before he could present this to the board."

Elena closed the velvet book with a heavy thud. She looked at the clock on the wall.

It was 4:30 AM. The boardroom meeting was three and a half hours away.

"Aris," Elena commanded, her posture stiffening into absolute steel. "Interface Arthur's private encrypted vault with our main server. Pull every wire transfer log, every Swiss account number, and every recorded phone call listed in this ledger."

"On it," Aris replied, typing furiously.

"David," she turned to her lead attorney. "Contact the Special Agent in charge of the FBI Financial Crimes Division. Tell him I have the evidence that links the Thorne cyber-attack directly to the primary financier."

Elena walked over to the mirror, looking at her reflection. She wiped away a single tear, her expression transforming from a grieving daughter into a terrifying corporate executioner.

"Charles thinks he’s coming to claim my father’s empire," Elena whispered to the empty room. "He’s about to find out why they call us Sterlings."
