Chapter 18 - The Boardroom Execution

The skyscraper at 100 Sterling Way pierced the foggy Seattle sky.

Inside the executive boardroom on the eightieth floor, sixteen senior board members sat around a massive oval glass table. The atmosphere was thick with tension. Outside the glass walls, rain lashed violently against the building, matching the dark mood inside.

Charles Sterling sat at the head of the table, tapping his gold pen against a leather notepad.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Charles announced, checking his diamond Patek Philippe watch. "It is 8:00 AM. As Vice Chairman, I call this emergency session of the Aethelgard Board of Directors to order."

A few board members shifted uncomfortably in their seats.

"As you know," Charles continued smoothly, "my beloved brother Arthur has suffered a catastrophic medical event. He remains in an unresponsive coma. In light of this tragedy—and given the immense instability our company has faced over the past few months—we must vote immediately to appoint a stable, experienced hand to lead Aethelgard."

He raised a legal document. "I move to invoke Emergency Clause 12, transferring all executive authority to myself and suspending Elena Sterling’s operational command pending a full psychiatric and administrative audit."

"I second the motion," said Harold Vance (no relation to Julian), an elder board member who had secretly accepted a three-million-dollar bribe from Charles two days prior.

"All those in favor—" Charles began, a triumphant grin breaking across his face.

BOOM.

The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open with violent force.

Elena Sterling stepped into the room.

She wore an all-black suit, her dark hair pulled back into an immaculate braid. Behind her walked two armed federal agents in suits, accompanied by David Croft holding a sealed titanium briefcase.

The room erupted into gasps. Charles’s pen froze in his hand.

"You're late, Elena," Charles sneered, quickly regaining his composure. "And this is a closed executive session. Security, escort Ms. Sterling out."

The two private bouncers standing near the door hesitated, looking at the FBI badges pinned to the jackets of the men behind Elena. They didn't move an inch.

"Sit down, Charles," Elena commanded, her voice dropping like an anvil onto the glass table.

She walked to the opposite end of the table, placing her hands flat on the polished glass, leaning forward until her icy gaze locked onto her uncle’s eyes.

"You said my father is unresponsive," Elena said softly. "You said I am emotionally unfit. But what you forgot, Uncle Charles... is that Aethelgard was never a democracy."

David Croft opened the titanium briefcase, pulling out a thick, red-stamped document.

"For the past six years," David announced to the stunned board, "Mr. Charles Sterling has engaged in systematic corporate embezzlement, laundering over four hundred million dollars through offshore accounts in Zurich and Panama to fund illegal hostile takeovers."

"That's a lie!" Charles roared, slamming his fists onto the table as he stood up. "This is a desperate stunt by a hysterical girl!"

"We have the wire logs, Charles," David continued calmly. "Signed by your private offshore entity, Vanguard Capital Apex. And more importantly... we have the digital authorization codes you provided to Victor Thorne to execute the cyber-attack on our Tokyo property."

The board members gasped, backing their chairs away from Charles as if he were radioactive.

Special Agent Miller stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.

"Charles Sterling," Agent Miller said, his voice echoing in the silent boardroom. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, treasonous corporate sabotage, and conspiracy to commit securities fraud."

Charles backed away toward the floor-to-ceiling windows, his face turning a sickly shade of grey. "No... no! I am the Vice Chairman! You can't do this to me! My brother built this company with me!"

"My father built this empire despite you, Charles," Elena said, walking slowly around the table toward him.

She pulled a single piece of paper from her jacket pocket and held it up to his face.

"Before my father collapsed," Elena whispered, her voice filled with absolute, terrifying power, "he signed a blind irrevocable trust. The moment his heart stopped or his brain went unconscious, 100% of his voting shares transferred automatically to me. I don't control forty-eight percent of this company, Charles."

She leaned in close to his ear.

"I control fifty-six percent. You were defeated before you even stepped into this room."

Special Agent Miller grabbed Charles’s arm, pinning it behind his back and snapping the steel cuff around his wrist. The gold Patek Philippe watch clinked pathetically against the metal.

The board members stood up one by one, watching in awe as Charles Sterling—the shadow puppet master who had tried to destroy the family from within—was marched out of the boardroom in handcuffs, weeping and screaming curses into the empty hallway.

Elena turned back to the remaining board members. She walked to the head of the table, pulled out the leather executive chair, and sat down.

"Now," Elena said calmly, opening her portfolio. "Let's begin today's meeting."
