Chapter 1 - The Cold Floor

The first thing Elena felt was the cold.
Icy water ran from her dark hair, slipped down the back of her silk dress, and gathered beneath her knees on the polished marble floor.
She could hear her own breathing, uneven and frightened, but the two people standing above her seemed untouched by what they were doing.
Margaret Harrington stared at her daughter-in-law with open contempt.
Julian stood near the bedroom door with his arms folded across his chest.
He was Elena's husband.
He was also the one person she had expected to defend her.
Instead, he watched.
“Tell us where you put it,” Margaret said.
Elena lifted her trembling face.
“I didn't take your necklace.”
Margaret's expression hardened.
“The necklace has belonged to this family for generations.”
“I know.”
“It was inside a locked safe.”
“I know that too.”
“And now it is gone.”
Elena turned toward Julian.
“Please.”
He looked away.
That hurt more than Margaret's accusations.
Only hours earlier, Elena had believed she was part of this family.
She had spent three years trying to earn Margaret's approval, swallowing insults at dinner tables, pretending not to notice whispered conversations that stopped whenever she entered a room, and defending Julian whenever her friends warned that his mother controlled too much of his life.
Now all those quiet humiliations had led to this moment.
Margaret had claimed that the priceless diamond necklace disappeared sometime during the afternoon.
According to her, only three people knew the security code.
Margaret.
Julian.
And Elena.
Margaret insisted she had spent the afternoon at a charity luncheon.
Julian had been at his office.
That left Elena.
It was perfect.
Too perfect.
Elena slowly understood that no one was investigating what had happened.
They had already decided she was guilty.
“You married my son for money,” Margaret said.
Elena stared at her.
“You have been waiting for your chance.”
“That isn't true.”
“Then confess.”
“No.”
Margaret reached down and took the empty glass from beside Elena.
“Tomorrow investigators will arrive.”
Elena looked at Julian again.
“Do you believe I stole it?”
There was a long silence.
Julian finally spoke.
“I don't know what to believe.”
Elena's heart seemed to stop.
Three years of marriage had been reduced to seven words.
Margaret smiled faintly.
“Lock her in the guest room.”
Elena stood slowly.
Her legs were shaking, but something inside her had changed.
Fear was still there.
So was heartbreak.
But underneath both emotions was a colder realization.
This was not an accusation born from panic.
This had been planned.
Margaret wanted Elena frightened.
She wanted her isolated.
Most importantly, she wanted Elena to confess before anyone asked the right questions.
Two guards escorted Elena upstairs.
As the guest-room door closed behind her, Elena heard the key turning from the outside.
She stood motionless in the darkness.
Then she wiped the tears from her face.
If Margaret wanted a confession, she would have to wait.
Elena was done begging.

She was going to discover exactly what had happened.
And when she did, she would make certain everyone in that mansion heard the truth.
