Chapter 8 - The Evidence

Elena returned to the guest room before dawn.
She relocked the door from the inside as carefully as possible.
By morning, exhaustion weighed heavily on her.
But for the first time since the accusation began, she was not afraid.
She had evidence.
Margaret had a lie.
The balance had changed.
At nine, guards escorted Elena downstairs.
The main living room had been arranged like a courtroom.
Three private investigators sat near the fireplace.
Thomas stood beside Margaret.
Julian remained near the windows.
A folder rested on the coffee table.
Margaret smiled when Elena entered.
“Sit.”
Elena remained standing.
One investigator introduced himself as Mr. Clarke.
“We've been told you're prepared to make a statement regarding the missing Harrington necklace.”
Elena looked at Margaret.
“That depends.”
Margaret's smile disappeared.
“On what?”
“Whether everyone here wants the truth.”
Clarke leaned forward.
“That is precisely what we want.”
Elena almost admired his confidence.
Margaret had hired him.
Thomas had controlled his evidence.
The man probably believed he was conducting a legitimate investigation.
Margaret pushed the folder toward Elena.
“Sign.”
Elena opened it.
The document stated that she had removed the necklace without permission and intended to sell it.
Her supposed motive was financial hardship before her marriage.
Elena read every line.
It was insulting.
It was also beautifully constructed.
Margaret had prepared the story in advance.
“You've been busy,” Elena said.
Margaret's voice sharpened.
“Sign it.”
Elena looked at Julian.
“I'd like five minutes alone with my husband.”
“No,” Margaret said.
Julian turned.
“Mother.”
“She is trying to manipulate you.”
“Then five minutes won't matter.”
Margaret stood.
“I said no.”
Julian stared at her.
Something in his expression changed.
“You don't decide that.”
The room went silent.
Elena saw Margaret's shock.
It might have been the first time Julian had openly contradicted her in years.
He gestured toward the library.
“Elena.”
They walked inside.
Julian closed the door.
He looked exhausted.
“Tell me what this is about.”
Elena said one sentence.
“Check your email.”
He frowned.
“What?”
“I scheduled a message last night.”
Julian removed his phone.
A new email waited.
He opened it.
The first photograph appeared.
The missing necklace inside Margaret's safe.
His face lost its color.
He swiped.
Financial documents.
Insurance correspondence.
Margaret's handwritten notes.
Elena's name.
He stopped breathing normally.
“This isn't possible.”
“It is.”
“These could be edited.”
Elena stared at him.
“Then don't believe me.”
His eyes rose.
“Open her safe.”
“What?”
“Right now.”
“Elena.”
“If I'm lying, the safe will be empty.”
He looked toward the closed library doors.
Elena stepped closer.
“If I'm telling the truth, then you need to decide what kind of man you're going to be after you see it.”
Julian's hand tightened around the phone.
Outside, Margaret was waiting confidently.
She believed Julian would protect her as he always had.
Julian opened the library door.
He looked directly at his mother.

“Show me your office safe.”
And for the first time, Margaret looked afraid.
