Chapter 15 - The Papers

Two weeks later, Elena entered a lawyer's office carrying a folder.

The divorce papers were surprisingly simple.

The emotions behind them were not.

Her attorney explained property rights.

Assets.

Possible support.

Potential settlement.

Elena listened carefully.

“You are entitled to considerably more than you're requesting,” the lawyer said.

“I know.”

“Your husband's family has substantial resources.”

“I know.”

“And considering the circumstances surrounding your separation, you have leverage.”

Elena looked out the window.

“I don't want leverage.”

The attorney studied her.

“What do you want?”

“A clean ending.”

Several days later, Julian received the papers.

He called Elena immediately.

She answered because she knew avoiding the conversation would only delay it.

“You filed.”

“Yes.”

He sounded hollow.

“You aren't asking for anything.”

“I don't want anything.”

“You are legally entitled to assets.”

“I have enough.”

“Elena.”

“My decision isn't about money.”

He was silent.

Finally, he said, “Can we meet once?”

She hesitated.

“Please.”

They chose a quiet café.

Julian arrived first.

He looked different.

No tailored suit.

No driver waiting outside.

No expensive watch.

He looked tired but calmer.

Elena sat opposite him.

For several seconds they simply looked at each other.

Julian spoke first.

“I moved out of the mansion.”

Elena blinked.

“Where?”

“An apartment near the office.”

“Why?”

He smiled bitterly.

“Because you were right.”

“About what?”

“I didn't know how to live without someone else making decisions for me.”

Elena looked down at her coffee.

Julian continued.

“I started therapy.”

She looked up.

“That is good.”

“I wish I'd done it before I destroyed our marriage.”

Elena did not correct him.

He had.

“I am not here to convince you to come back.”

“Then why are we here?”

“Because I owed you an apology without asking for something afterward.”

That made her listen.

Julian took a breath.

“I failed you.”

“No excuses.”

“No explanation about my mother.”

“No claim that I was confused.”

“I failed you.”

Elena felt her eyes burn.

Julian continued.

“You asked me to believe you.”

“I didn't.”

“You asked me to protect you.”

“I didn't.”

“You asked me to see you as my family.”

“And when it mattered, I didn't.”

Elena whispered, “Thank you.”

He nodded.

“I'll sign the papers.”

She looked at him.

“I won't fight you.”

Something painful and peaceful passed between them.

They had loved each other.

That truth remained.

But some endings were necessary even when love had once been real.

As Elena stood to leave, Julian spoke.

“I hope someday you remember more than the last two days.”

She looked back.

“I will.”

He seemed surprised.

Elena smiled sadly.

“But remembering the good doesn't mean I have to return to what became bad.”

Julian nodded.

She walked outside.

May you like

For the first time, their goodbye did not feel like abandonment.

It felt like closure.
