Chapter 11 - Flashing Blue Lights

The police vehicles entered the Harrington estate shortly before noon.

Their blue lights reflected across the enormous front windows.

House staff appeared silently in doorways.

Rumors had already spread.

Within minutes, the private scandal Margaret had tried to control became impossible to hide.

Two officers entered with a detective.

Elena recognized Detective Harris from the brief online report she had submitted using the old phone.

She had attached the photographs before the battery died.

Harris introduced himself.

Margaret immediately stepped forward.

“This is a family misunderstanding.”

Harris looked at her.

“We received evidence suggesting attempted insurance fraud and unlawful confinement.”

Margaret's confidence flickered.

“Unlawful confinement?”

Elena spoke.

“I was locked in an upstairs room against my will.”

Julian closed his eyes.

Margaret turned toward him.

“You know that was for everyone's protection.”

Julian looked at the detective.

“My wife is telling the truth.”

Margaret stared at him as if he had struck her.

Thomas shifted toward the hallway.

One officer noticed.

“Sir, please remain where you are.”

Thomas stopped.

Harris examined the necklace.

He photographed the safe.

He reviewed the financial documents.

Then he asked about the missing camera footage.

Julian pointed toward Thomas.

“He controls the security system.”

Margaret snapped.

“Julian.”

He ignored her.

Thomas began sweating.

“I performed routine maintenance.”

Harris looked at him.

“During the exact eleven minutes when the alleged theft occurred?”

Thomas said nothing.

Elena watched the pressure build.

Margaret had relied on everyone obeying her.

Now each person had reasons to protect themselves.

Thomas cracked first.

“I was told to delete it.”

Margaret spun toward him.

“Be quiet.”

The detective raised an eyebrow.

“Who told you?”

Thomas looked at Margaret.

Nobody needed the answer spoken aloud.

Margaret's face became crimson.

“You ungrateful coward.”

Harris stepped between them.

“Mrs. Harrington, I suggest you stop speaking.”

She refused.

“This woman invaded my family.”

She pointed at Elena.

“She turned my son against me.”

Elena remained calm.

Margaret's voice rose.

“She wanted my house.”

“No,” Elena said.

Everyone turned.

“I wanted a husband who trusted me.”

Julian lowered his head.

Margaret seemed to have no response.

Harris instructed another officer to secure the office and collect the documents.

Margaret realized the situation was no longer hers to command.

“You cannot take those.”

“They may be evidence.”

“I know people.”

Harris remained expressionless.

“Then they can contact your attorney.”

The officer approached Margaret.

She stepped backward.

For the first time, genuine fear appeared on her face.

Julian watched silently.

Elena expected him to intervene.

He did not.

When Margaret was escorted through the front doors for formal questioning, she turned toward Elena.

“This isn't finished.”

Elena met her eyes.

“For me, it is.”

The doors closed.

The mansion fell silent.

Julian looked around the home he had spent his entire life inside.

Then he looked at Elena.

Everything he thought he understood had disappeared in one morning.

May you like

But Elena had already made another decision.

She was leaving before nightfall.
