Chapter 18 - The Unexpected Letter

Nearly a year after the night of the missing necklace, Elena received an envelope.

There was no return address.

She almost threw it away.

Then she recognized the handwriting.

Margaret.

Elena sat at her kitchen table.

For several minutes she did not open it.

Eventually curiosity won.

Elena,

I have rewritten this letter many times.

You probably expect an apology.

For most of my life, I believed apologies were something weak people used after losing.

Perhaps that belief explains why I am writing from where I am now.

Elena stopped reading.

She looked toward the window.

Then she continued.

I told myself I was protecting Julian.

I told myself you were changing him.

The truth is that I was afraid he would no longer need me.

I created enemies whenever I felt my control disappearing.

You became the easiest enemy.

Elena felt no triumph.

Only sadness.

Margaret continued.

I cannot ask you to forgive what I did.

I also cannot ask Julian.

He has not visited me.

He writes occasionally.

That is more kindness than I deserve.

You survived because you trusted yourself when nobody else did.

I hated that strength in you.

Now I understand why.

It was something I never had.

Margaret.

Elena folded the letter.

She did not cry.

She did not feel anger.

After work, she told Maya.

“Are you going to respond?”

“I don't know.”

“You don't owe her anything.”

“I know.”

That evening Daniel came over for dinner.

Their relationship had grown slowly.

He knew Elena valued independence.

He never pushed.

When she showed him the letter, he read it carefully.

“What do you want to do?”

Elena smiled.

“That is exactly what I like about you.”

“What?”

“You asked what I want.”

Daniel laughed.

“What else would I ask?”

Elena looked at the letter again.

Eventually she took out a blank sheet of paper.

Margaret,

I received your letter.

I do not hate you.

I also cannot pretend what happened did not change my life.

Forgiveness, for me, does not mean returning to the relationship we had.

It means I no longer carry you with me.

I hope you use your time to become someone who no longer needs to control others to feel safe.

Elena.

She mailed it the next morning.

No dramatic reconciliation followed.

There was no second letter.

Elena preferred it that way.

Some stories did not need people to reunite.

Sometimes healing meant closing a door gently instead of standing beside it forever.
