Chapter 5 - Playing Weak

The rest of the day became a performance.

Elena ate the stale bread.

She drank the water.

She sat quietly whenever guards passed the room.

She wanted Margaret to believe the fight had left her.

At noon, Julian returned alone.

He unlocked the door but remained near the entrance.

“I checked the security system.”

Elena said nothing.

“There is missing footage.”

“I know.”

“How?”

“That isn't important yet.”

His expression darkened.

“It is important to me.”

Elena almost laughed.

“Yesterday my innocence wasn't important to you.”

The words struck him.

He lowered his eyes.

“I was angry.”

“You watched your mother humiliate me.”

“I thought you had taken something from us.”

“Us?”

Julian looked back at her.

Elena stood.

“That necklace belongs to your mother.”

“It belongs to the family.”

“And apparently I was never family.”

“Elena.”

“No.”

She raised one hand.

“You don't get to ask for understanding because you're uncomfortable now.”

He remained silent.

Elena could see guilt forming, but guilt was not enough.

She needed him thinking independently.

“Did you ask Thomas why the footage was deleted?”

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

“System maintenance.”

Elena nodded.

“Convenient.”

“He showed me maintenance reports.”

“Who signed them?”

Julian hesitated.

Elena already knew.

“My mother.”

Elena looked toward the window.

“Then I guess everything is explained.”

Her sarcasm was quiet but unmistakable.

Julian stepped farther into the room.

“What are you hiding?”

“The same thing you're hiding.”

“What does that mean?”

“You know something is wrong.”

His face tightened.

“But you're afraid the answer will be your mother.”

Julian walked away without replying.

The door locked again.

Elena sat down.

She had planted another seed.

Now she had to survive long enough for it to grow.

At sunset, Margaret arrived.

Her smile had returned.

“Julian tells me you've been filling his head with ridiculous theories.”

Elena shrugged.

“I told him to look at his own security system.”

“You've always been clever.”

“Thank you.”

“That wasn't a compliment.”

“I accepted it anyway.”

Margaret's eyes narrowed.

“You should remember who controls this house.”

Elena met her gaze.

“I do.”

Margaret leaned closer.

“And tomorrow, when you sign that confession, you'll disappear from this family quietly.”

There it was.

Not jail.

Not prosecution.

Disappearance.

Margaret wanted Elena gone.

The necklace was only the weapon.

“Why do you hate me so much?” Elena asked.

For a moment Margaret looked almost amused.

“Because my son became weak after meeting you.”

Elena understood then.

This was not simply about money.

Margaret had spent decades controlling Julian.

Elena had threatened that control.

Margaret left.

The mansion became silent.

Rain began striking the windows around eleven.

At midnight, thunder rolled across the estate.

Elena removed the wire from beneath the mattress.

She knelt beside the door.

Her hands were steady now.

She inserted the wire into the old lock.

Once.

Twice.

A third attempt.

Click.

Elena froze.

The door moved.

She had escaped.

Now she had one chance to uncover the truth before Margaret realized the woman she thought she had broken was walking freely through her house.
