Chapter 14 - The Price of the Truth

The investigation moved quickly.

Margaret's financial problems were worse than Elena had realized.

The insurance scheme was only one part of a larger crisis.

Several investments had failed.

She had borrowed against private assets.

She had hidden debts from Julian and the Harrington company board.

The necklace claim was supposed to give her enough money to delay discovery.

Elena learned these details from Detective Harris.

He called her three days after she left the mansion.

“We may need another statement.”

“I'll cooperate.”

“There is also the matter of your confinement.”

Elena became quiet.

Harris continued carefully.

“You understand you can pursue that separately.”

“I understand.”

After the call, Elena sat beside the hotel window.

The city moved below her.

Cars.

Pedestrians.

Ordinary lives.

She had forgotten how comforting ordinary could feel.

Her phone rang again.

Julian.

She let it ring.

Then a message appeared.

I am not asking you to come back.

I only want you to know I gave the police everything.

Elena read it twice.

Another message followed.

Thomas admitted my mother ordered him to delete the footage.

Elena placed the phone down.

She felt no satisfaction.

Only exhaustion.

Her friend Maya arrived that afternoon.

They had worked together before Elena married Julian.

Maya hugged her without saying anything.

Elena finally cried.

Not the frightened tears Margaret had watched on the marble floor.

These were different.

They were the tears of someone allowing herself to understand what had happened.

“I feel stupid,” Elena whispered.

Maya pulled back.

“Why?”

“I defended him.”

“You loved him.”

“I ignored every warning.”

“You wanted your marriage to work.”

Elena wiped her face.

“I kept thinking Margaret would eventually accept me.”

Maya shook her head.

“You don't need her acceptance.”

“I know that now.”

Maya stayed until evening.

Before leaving, she placed a business card on the table.

“My company is hiring.”

Elena looked at it.

“For what?”

“Senior account manager.”

“I haven't worked full-time in two years.”

“So?”

Elena smiled faintly.

Maya pointed at her.

“That woman who figured out deleted camera footage, escaped a locked room, broke into a safe, uncovered financial fraud, and sent evidence to herself before the phone died?”

Elena laughed for the first time in days.

“She can handle marketing.”

After Maya left, Elena picked up the card.

A job.

Her own apartment.

Her own bank account.

Her own choices.

The future began forming in practical details.

That night Julian called again.

This time Elena answered.

Neither spoke immediately.

Finally, he said, “She's been formally charged.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“I see.”

“I'm sorry.”

“I know.”

“I don't expect forgiveness.”

That surprised her.

Julian continued.

“But I wanted you to hear this from me.”

A long silence followed.

Elena spoke softly.

“Thank you.”

Then she ended the call.

It was the first conversation they had shared without Margaret standing between them.

It was also the first conversation that made Elena certain their marriage was over.
