Chapter 10 - The Truth Opens

Julian remained in Margaret's office long after the investigators stepped outside.
The necklace rested on the desk.
The diamonds looked almost obscene now.
So much suffering had been created around something so small.
Elena stood near the doorway.
Margaret sat in a chair.
She no longer looked like the untouchable matriarch of the Harrington family.
She looked cornered.
Julian held the insurance documents.
“How long?”
Margaret stared at the floor.
“How long have you been in debt?”
She sighed.
“Almost two years.”
Julian looked stunned.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because it was my responsibility.”
“So framing Elena was responsible?”
Margaret flinched.
“I was trying to protect this family.”
Elena finally spoke.
“No.”
Margaret looked at her.
“You were protecting yourself.”
“Elena, stay out of this.”
Elena stepped forward.
“You locked me in a room.”
“You were never in danger.”
“You convinced my husband I was a thief.”
Margaret looked toward Julian.
“I knew he would eventually forgive you.”
Elena almost could not believe what she heard.
“After you destroyed my reputation?”
“You would have survived.”
Those words ended whatever sympathy Elena might once have had for the older woman.
Julian slammed the papers onto the desk.
“Enough.”
Margaret stared at her son.
Julian's voice shook.
“You used me.”
“I raised you.”
“You used that too.”
Margaret stood.
“Everything I have done has been for you.”
“No.”
Julian's eyes filled with tears.
“Everything you have done has been to keep me dependent on you.”
Elena watched him finally confront a truth that had existed long before she entered the family.
Margaret had controlled Julian through guilt.
Through money.
Through loyalty.
Through fear of disappointing her.
But understanding his weakness did not excuse what he had done.
Julian turned toward Elena.
The horror on his face was genuine.
“I am sorry.”
Elena did not answer.
He walked closer.
“I should have listened.”
“Yes.”
“I should have checked the cameras.”
“Yes.”
“I should have protected you.”
Elena stared at him.
“Yes.”
Every answer hurt him more.
He reached toward her.
Elena stepped back.
His hand fell.
Margaret watched them.
Then suddenly she laughed bitterly.
“This is exactly what she wanted.”
Julian turned.
“What?”
“To separate us.”
Elena felt something inside her become completely calm.
She looked at Margaret.
“You still think this is about winning Julian.”
Margaret said nothing.
“It isn't.”
Elena took out the dead smartphone.
“I sent everything to an account you cannot access.”
Margaret's eyes widened.
“The photographs.”
The room became quiet again.
“The records.”
Elena looked at Thomas through the open door.
“The deleted footage logs.”
Thomas turned pale.
Margaret's voice cracked.
“What have you done?”
Elena answered calmly.
“What you should have done from the beginning.”
She walked toward the front hall.
“I told the truth.”
Then distant sirens became audible beyond the mansion gates.
Margaret stared toward the windows.
Julian looked at Elena.
She did not need to explain.

The authorities were coming.
And this time, Margaret would not control the story.
