Chapter 17 - Six Months Later

Six months after leaving the mansion, Elena woke before her alarm.

Sunlight filled her apartment.

It was small.

The kitchen barely had enough counter space.

The bedroom closet was half the size of the one she once had.

Elena loved every inch of it.

She paid the rent herself.

She selected the furniture herself.

She chose the neighborhood.

Nobody criticized the curtains.

Nobody told her the dishes were inappropriate for the family.

Nobody asked whether Margaret approved.

Elena made coffee and stood by the window.

Below, the city was already alive.

Her job at Maya's company had become something she had not expected.

A career.

Within four months, Elena had taken control of two major client accounts.

Her manager had praised her instincts.

Her colleagues trusted her.

Every small success repaired something inside her.

At lunch, Maya dropped into the chair opposite her.

“You're smiling.”

“I smile.”

“You used to.”

Elena laughed.

“What do you want?”

Maya pointed toward a man across the office.

“Daniel wants to ask you out.”

Elena nearly dropped her fork.

“What?”

“He's been trying to gather courage for three weeks.”

“I am recently divorced.”

“You are also allowed to drink coffee with another human being.”

Elena glanced toward Daniel.

He was a quiet project manager with an easy smile.

He had never asked intrusive questions about her marriage.

He knew about the public court case but never mentioned it unless Elena did first.

“I don't know.”

Maya shrugged.

“You don't have to know.”

That sentence stayed with Elena.

For years, every choice in the Harrington house felt permanent.

Dinner plans became obligations.

Family expectations became rules.

A disagreement became betrayal.

Now Elena could simply try something.

She could change her mind.

She could say no.

She could say yes.

That afternoon Daniel approached her desk.

“Hey.”

“Hey.”

He looked unusually nervous.

“Would you maybe want to get coffee after work?”

Elena smiled.

“You're asking someone who already drinks four coffees a day.”

“So that's a yes?”

She considered him.

No pressure.

No expectations.

Just coffee.

“Yes.”

Daniel smiled.

“Great.”

He walked away before he could say anything awkward.

Elena laughed softly.

Her phone vibrated.

A message from Julian.

I heard you got promoted.

Congratulations.

Elena stared at it.

Months earlier, seeing his name would have ruined her day.

Now she simply typed.

Thank you.

He responded with a thumbs-up.

Nothing more.

Elena returned to work.

That evening, she met Daniel at a small café.

They talked about movies.

Bad office coffee.

Travel.

Books.

Nothing dramatic happened.

No promises were made.

And that was exactly why Elena enjoyed it.

When she walked home afterward, she realized something extraordinary.

Her past was no longer controlling every decision.

May you like

It had become what the past was supposed to be.

Something behind her.
