Chapter 1 - The Red Light

For three full seconds, nobody in the hallway moved.
The tiny red light in the corner of the ceiling burned brighter than anything else in Ethan Hale's vision.
Sophia stood with her arms crossed over her torn yellow blouse, but the panic she had performed only moments earlier had disappeared from her face.
Richard Hale kept one trembling finger raised toward the camera.
His chest rose slowly under his dark sweater.
He looked older than seventy in that moment, not because of weakness, but because he had just watched his own son believe the worst of him without asking a single question.
Ethan's defensive stance loosened by an inch.
"The camera..."
His whisper was barely audible.
Sophia's eyes jumped to him.
Then she forced a sob.
"Ethan, don't let him confuse you."
Richard lowered his hand.
"I don't need to confuse anyone."
His voice had become quiet.
"We only need to watch what happened."
Sophia shook her head too quickly.
"He could have staged the footage."
Ethan turned toward her.
That was the first mistake she made after noticing the camera.
She had accused Richard of staging footage before anyone had even watched it.
Ethan noticed.
Richard noticed that Ethan noticed.
Sophia noticed both men noticing.
Her breath changed.
For the first time, it no longer sounded theatrical.
Richard walked toward a narrow black panel hidden beside the framed oil painting near the staircase.
He entered a six-digit code with slow, deliberate taps.
The wall monitor awakened.
Four camera feeds appeared.
The hallway.
The kitchen.
The front entrance.
The library.
Sophia stepped backward.
"You record people without telling them?"
Richard looked at her.
"The security cameras were installed five years ago after the break-in."
Ethan swallowed.
He remembered signing the insurance paperwork himself.
He had forgotten about the hallway camera because it blended into the molding.
Richard selected the hallway feed and dragged the timeline back less than a minute.
The three of them watched in silence.
There was Sophia standing calmly in the hallway.
There was Richard several feet away, holding a glass of water.
There was Sophia glancing once toward the staircase.
Then she looked toward the front door.
Then, with no one touching her, she grabbed the collar of her blouse and pulled hard.
Two buttons flew across the polished floor.
She ran her fingers through her own hair.
She rubbed beneath her eyes until they reddened.
Then she folded her arms across her chest and screamed.
"Help! Stay away from me!"
On the recording, Richard dropped his glass.
The shock on his face was raw and immediate.
A second later, Ethan appeared at the end of the hallway.
The playback reached the present.
Nobody spoke.
The silence felt more violent than shouting.
Ethan turned slowly toward Sophia.
Her face had gone pale.
"Tell me what I just watched."
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
"Sophia."
His voice cracked.
"Tell me what I just watched."
She stepped toward him.
"I panicked."
"You tore your own shirt."
"Because I panicked."
"You screamed for help before he touched you."
"You don't understand what he said to me."
Richard's jaw tightened.
"I asked why forty-two thousand dollars had been transferred from the household renovation account."
Sophia's eyes flashed.
Ethan looked from his father to her.
"What renovation account?"
Sophia answered too fast.
"He's lying."
Richard reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.
"At 9:12 this morning, my bank called me about three transfers."
He held the screen toward Ethan.
"All three were authorized using your credentials."
Ethan stared at the notification.
The transfer total was not forty-two thousand dollars.
It was four hundred and twenty thousand.
His face changed.
"I didn't authorize this."
Sophia backed away again.
A sound came from outside the villa.
Distant at first.
Then unmistakable.
Sirens.
Sophia closed her eyes for half a second.
Richard looked toward the front windows.
Ethan stared at her.
"Did you call the police?"
She did not answer.
The doorbell rang.
Then someone knocked hard enough to shake the brass handle.
"Police. Open the door."
Sophia suddenly began crying again.
This time the tears came easily.
She looked at Ethan with a terror that seemed almost convincing.
"I called before you came in."
Richard's expression sharpened.
"What did you tell them?"
Sophia's lower lip trembled.
"I told them your father attacked me."
Ethan stared at her as if he no longer recognized the woman he had planned to marry in six weeks.
Richard looked toward the glowing wall monitor.
Then the screen went black.
Every camera feed vanished at once.

The red light in the ceiling turned off.
And from somewhere inside the mansion, a security alarm began to scream.
