Chapter 8 - Box 617

Richard did not go to Vivian's house.
Instead, he went to First Commonwealth Bank with Ethan, Marcus, and two detectives from the financial-crimes unit.
The bank manager led them through two security doors into the vault.
Marcus's key opened Box 617.
Inside was a padded envelope, a portable hard drive, and a sealed note addressed to Richard.
Richard opened the note first.
Marcus had written it the previous night.
If you are reading this, someone has discovered the backup.
The drive contains copies of deleted villa footage, access logs, and one audio file I cannot explain.
Richard looked at Marcus.
"Audio?"
Marcus nodded.
"I found it on an old server partition."
They returned to a private conference room.
A detective connected the drive to an isolated laptop.
The archive contained thousands of files.
Most were ordinary.
Employees entering rooms.
Deliveries.
Dinner parties.
Sophia moving through the house late at night.
Daniel visiting when Richard was away.
Vivian using the side entrance.
Then they opened the audio file.
The date was October 14, 2004.
Ethan felt cold before it even started.
The recording was scratchy.
A woman's voice spoke first.
Caroline.
Ethan had not heard his mother's voice in years.
His entire face changed.
"Daniel, stop pretending this is accounting noise."
A man's voice answered.
Daniel Mercer sounded younger, but unmistakable.
"Caroline, you are looking at incomplete numbers."
"I'm looking at pension money moved through three shell companies."
"Vivian signed the transfers."
"Vivian signed one."
There was a pause.
Caroline continued.
"You signed the other two."
Richard gripped the edge of the table.
The recording went silent for several seconds.
Then Daniel said,
"You should be very careful with accusations like that."
Caroline answered without hesitation.
"You should be very careful stealing from people who trust you."
Ethan's eyes filled, but he did not look away.
Daniel's voice became lower.
"Richard will never believe you if this turns into your word against mine."
Caroline gave a short laugh.
"Then it's a good thing I made copies."
The file ended.
No one spoke.
Richard looked shattered.
He had believed Caroline suspected Daniel.
He had never known she confronted him.
"Where was this recorded?" Ethan asked.
Marcus checked the metadata.
"Library microphone. Old system."
Richard stared at the laptop.
"Why didn't I ever hear it?"
Marcus shook his head.
"I don't know."
The detective searched the drive.
There was another file created the next morning.
A text document.
One sentence.
IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO ME, CHECK THE NORTH COVE ACCOUNT.
Ethan looked at his father.
"What happened to Mom after October fourteenth?"
Richard's expression changed.
"She was diagnosed with leukemia six months later."
"Not what I asked."
Richard looked down.
"She became frightened."
"Of Daniel?"
"Of someone."
"Did she tell you?"
"She told me to take Ethan and leave the company."
Ethan blinked.
He had never heard that.
Richard continued.
"I thought the illness was making her afraid. I thought she was overwhelmed."
The guilt in his voice was difficult to hear.
"I told her I would fix the business problems after she recovered."
She never recovered.
Ethan turned away.
The detective began searching corporate records for North Cove.
At first, nothing appeared.
Then he found North Cove Advisory, dissolved in 2007.
Its registered agent had been Daniel Mercer.
Its original beneficiary was hidden behind a trust.
The trust had one named controller.
Vivian Hale.
Richard closed his eyes.
The old theft had never stopped.
It had merely changed shape.
The detective searched the new transfer destinations.
Mercer Holdings had sent money to North Cove Capital Partners, a newer company registered in Delaware.
The money moved again into an offshore investment fund.
Total diverted over twenty-two years: potentially more than thirty million dollars.
Ethan whispered, "They've been stealing from us since Mom was alive."
Richard corrected him.
"From employees, shareholders, and us."
His anger had become very calm.
"And now they wanted legal control before I found it."
Marcus opened another deleted video from two weeks earlier.
Sophia sat in the villa kitchen with Vivian.
This time the modern microphone had captured audio.
Sophia sounded nervous.
"What if Ethan believes him?"
Vivian answered softly.
"Then you make Ethan feel ashamed for doubting you."
"And if the camera catches me?"
"Daniel is handling the cameras."
Sophia took a long breath.
"I hate this part."
Vivian's tone did not change.
"You like the house. You like the ring. You like the life. Don't become moral now."
Ethan closed his eyes.
Sophia whispered something else.
"After the court order, what happens to Richard?"
Vivian answered.
"He goes somewhere safe."
"What does that mean?"
Vivian took a sip of tea.
"It means he stops being our problem."
The detective paused the recording.
Richard stared at his sister's face on the screen.
Then Ethan's phone rang.
It was Sophia.
He almost declined it.
Richard stopped him.
"Answer."
Ethan did.
Sophia's voice was barely above a whisper.
"Ethan, I made a terrible mistake."
He said nothing.
"Vivian is going to kill me if she thinks I talked."
Ethan looked at the detectives.
"Where are you?"
Sophia started crying.
"I got away from the station before they finished processing me."
One detective stood abruptly.
Ethan's voice hardened.
"Where are you?"
Sophia gave an address.
Richard recognized it.
It was Caroline Hale's old lake house.

Then Sophia said something that made every person in the room go silent.
"I have your mother's ledger."
