Chapter 10 - The Perfect Heir

The plan was elegant because it depended on Ethan's innocence.

If he knew too much, he could become unpredictable.

If he knew nothing, every document bearing his signature could look authentic.

Daniel had collected real signatures from legitimate meetings.

Sophia had collected passwords, phone access, and device codes.

Vivian had collected resentment and family history.

Together, they could build an entire paper trail showing Ethan quietly transferring money while preparing to seize control from an aging father.

If the scheme collapsed, Ethan would appear to be the architect.

Sophia would appear to be a frightened fiancée manipulated by him.

Daniel would claim he followed client instructions.

Vivian would be the concerned aunt who knew nothing.

Richard would be the unstable elderly man whose accusations sounded like paranoia.

The more Ethan understood, the less he could breathe.

"They chose me because I trusted them."

Richard looked at him.

"Yes."

The answer hurt more than comfort would have.

Sophia sat at the far end of the table under police supervision.

"Daniel called it the perfect heir structure."

Ethan stared at her.

"You heard him call it that?"

She nodded.

"He said wealthy sons sign things without reading because everyone around them has trained them to believe the paperwork is safe."

Richard looked away.

That criticism had enough truth to sting.

Ethan had been careless.

But carelessness was not conspiracy.

A detective photographed every ledger page.

Another contacted prosecutors.

Sophia offered to cooperate fully in exchange for consideration.

No one promised her anything.

Richard asked a question that had been bothering him.

"Why did Vivian write the plan in Caroline's ledger?"

Sophia's eyes moved toward the book.

"Because she hated Caroline."

Ethan looked up.

"Aunt Vivian loved my mother."

Sophia shook her head.

"No. She performed love around your mother."

Richard's face hardened.

"Why?"

Sophia hesitated.

"Caroline found the first theft. Vivian never forgave her for forcing the share sale."

"That was my decision."

"Vivian blamed Caroline."

Sophia looked at Ethan.

"She said your mother turned Richard against his own sister."

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"So she used my mother's ledger as a trophy."

Sophia gave a small nod.

That explanation made Richard feel physically ill.

For two decades, he had preserved Caroline's notes because they were one of the last pieces of her mind he still possessed.

Vivian had used the book to plan his destruction.

A detective entered from outside.

"We found tire tracks behind the property."

He showed a photo.

The tread matched a black SUV registered to Daniel Mercer's law firm.

Richard asked if Daniel was still at Vivian's house.

The answer was no.

Police had arrived there minutes earlier.

Vivian was gone.

Daniel was gone.

The house had been partially emptied.

Two computers were missing.

A fireplace contained freshly burned paper.

An officer had recovered one unburned corner with a bank logo.

They were running it now.

Sophia whispered, "They're leaving."

Ethan looked at her.

"Leaving where?"

"Daniel has a plane."

"Where?"

"Small private airfield north of the city."

The detectives immediately made calls.

Sophia continued.

"But Vivian won't go yet."

Richard studied her.

"Why not?"

"Because she hasn't gotten what she wants."

"The money?"

Sophia shook her head.

"The original voting certificates."

Richard's expression changed.

They were missing from his safe.

Sophia saw his confusion.

"I didn't take them."

Richard looked at her sharply.

"You took the ledger."

"Yes."

"The trust documents?"

"Daniel took copies. I don't know where the originals went."

"The voting certificates?"

"I never saw them."

Ethan frowned.

"Then who emptied the safe?"

Sophia looked genuinely uncertain.

"When I opened it last night, the certificates were already gone."

Richard stared at her.

"Last night?"

"Yes."

"The photograph was left in the safe this morning."

She nodded.

"That wasn't me."

The room went quiet.

Someone else had entered Richard's study after Sophia.

Someone had removed the most valuable original documents.

Someone had left the photograph pointing toward Vivian.

That person might have been helping Richard.

Or manipulating him toward a different target.

Marcus called from the villa.

His voice was tense.

"Richard, I found something in the access logs."

"What?"

"Your study door opened at 3:17 this morning."

"With whose key?"

"No electronic key. The physical lock triggered the door sensor."

"Do you have video?"

"The hallway camera was disabled for nine minutes."

Richard closed his eyes.

"Who was in the house?"

Marcus hesitated.

"According to the staff schedule, only one employee stayed overnight."

Richard knew who it was before Marcus said the name.

"Elise Warren."

Ethan looked at his father.

Elise had been the Hale family's housekeeper for twenty-six years.

She had cared for Caroline during chemotherapy.

She had helped raise Ethan.

She had packed his lunch on his first day of school and stood in the front row at his college graduation.

Richard trusted her more than nearly anyone alive.

Marcus continued.

"Elise is gone."

Richard's voice dropped.

"Gone where?"

"Her room is empty."

Then Marcus said the words that turned the case again.

"And I found your wife's old key ring on her bed."
