Chapter 15 - The Father Behind Sophia

Sophia had told Ethan her father died when she was sixteen.

She had shown him a photograph once.

A stern man in a gray suit standing beside a sailboat.

She said his name was Charles Bennett.

She said losing him had made her independent.

The photograph in the private club showed the same man very much alive.

Ethan went directly to the hospital.

Sophia saw the image in his hand before he spoke.

Her face collapsed.

Not with surprise.

With recognition.

"You lied about him too."

She looked toward the window.

"Yes."

Ethan felt something inside him go quiet.

"Is there anything about your life that was real?"

Sophia's lips trembled.

"My mother died when I was twelve."

"I didn't ask for one verified fact."

She closed her eyes.

Ethan placed the photograph on the blanket.

"Why is your father meeting Vivian?"

Sophia took a long breath.

"Because he introduced them."

Charles Bennett had been Hale Industries' CFO from 2001 to 2015.

Richard remembered him as brilliant, disciplined, and almost painfully conservative with money.

He retired early after a supposed heart condition.

He moved overseas.

At least that was what Richard had been told.

Sophia explained the rest.

Charles discovered Daniel's North Cove network years earlier.

Instead of exposing it, he demanded a share.

He helped disguise transfers inside legitimate corporate expenses.

When internal controls improved, he retired and continued managing the offshore side from a distance.

Sophia grew up knowing the Hale name not as a family, but as a source of wealth her father believed he had earned through cleverness.

"He hated Richard," Sophia said.

"Why?"

"Because Richard never treated him like an equal."

Ethan stared at her.

"He was an employee."

"My father didn't see it that way."

"So he stole tens of millions because his feelings were hurt?"

Sophia looked ashamed.

"He said he built the company while your father got the credit."

Ethan laughed without humor.

"And you believed him."

"When you're a child, you believe the story you hear every day."

That sentence stopped Ethan for a moment.

It did not excuse her.

But it explained how resentment could be inherited like money.

Charles had sent Sophia into Ethan's life intentionally.

They met at a charity auction two years earlier.

Ethan thought it was chance.

It was not.

Charles knew Ethan's habits, friends, and preferred events from company social calendars.

Sophia was told to become useful to him.

Then important.

Then indispensable.

"Did you ever love me?" Ethan asked.

Sophia's eyes filled.

"Yes."

He looked away.

"That might be the cruelest answer."

She cried silently.

"I was supposed to leave after I had your passwords."

"But you stayed."

"Yes."

"Because you loved me?"

"Partly."

Ethan turned back.

"What's the other part?"

Sophia's honesty arrived late and ugly.

"Because I liked the life."

Ethan nodded slowly.

At least that sounded true.

He asked about the initials S.P.

Sophia shook her head.

"My father called himself the silent partner sometimes, but Daniel never used his initials."

"So S.P. could be Charles?"

"Maybe."

Ethan showed her the payment totals.

Sophia stared at them.

"No."

"Why not?"

"My father would never leave twelve million in one payment trail."

"He's a criminal, not a magician."

"You don't understand."

Her voice sharpened.

"He taught Daniel how to hide transfers. If these payments are easy enough to trace to S.P., then S.P. is bait."

Ethan went still.

"Bait for whom?"

"For you."

She explained that Charles loved layered traps.

If investigators discovered the obvious conspiracy, he wanted them to follow a second trail toward a disposable culprit.

Simon Pierce's matching initials were probably deliberate.

Peter Lang's SP Review calendar could be deliberate too.

Everything pointing toward S.P. might be constructed.

"Where is your father now?" Ethan asked.

Sophia shook her head.

"I haven't seen him in person for eight months."

"How do you contact him?"

"He contacts me."

"How?"

"Through scheduled drafts in an email account."

Investigators recovered the account.

Most drafts were deleted.

One new message appeared while they watched.

NO SUBJECT.

Sophia opened it under supervision.

The message contained a single sentence.

YOU FAILED THE HALLWAY, BUT ETHAN STILL LOVES YOU ENOUGH TO BE USEFUL.

Ethan's face went hard.

A second line appeared as the draft synchronized.

BRING HIM TO THE BOARD MEETING TOMORROW.

May you like

Then a third.

RICHARD WILL NOT LEAVE THAT ROOM AS CHAIRMAN.
