Chapter 13 - Sophia's Second Betrayal
Ethan stared at the harbor image until the pixels blurred.
Sophia had told him Vivian wanted her dead.
She had handed over the ledger.
She had offered to cooperate.
Now she was standing on a yacht beside the same people she claimed to fear.
"She played us again," he said.
Richard did not answer immediately.
He had learned to distrust simple explanations.
"Maybe."
Ethan turned on him.
"You saw her."
"I saw a photograph."
"She ran from police."
"Yes."
"She framed you."
"Yes."
"She took two hundred thousand dollars."
"Yes."
Richard met his son's eyes.
"And all of that can be true while something else is also true."
Ethan hated that his father was right.
Harbor patrol intercepted the yacht six miles offshore.
It did not stop immediately.
For four tense minutes, the vessel continued north at full speed.
Then the engines cut.
Police boarded.
Daniel Mercer was arrested on the upper deck.
Vivian was found inside the main cabin.
Dr. Greene was in a guest room, visibly shaken.
Sophia was nowhere on board.
The stern rail had a torn strip of yellow silk caught on a metal edge.
Ethan felt sick.
A search began in the water.
Richard refused to assume the worst.
They later learned the truth from Dr. Greene.
He had not been a willing partner in the guardianship scheme.
Vivian approached him months earlier with selective recordings of Richard appearing confused after surgery.
She claimed the family needed documentation for emergency care planning.
Greene signed a preliminary assessment based on incomplete information.
When he realized Daniel had transformed it into a legal declaration, he refused to cooperate further.
Daniel then threatened to expose an unrelated prescription error from Greene's practice.
Greene panicked.
He helped once more.
Then he tried to withdraw.
That was when Vivian had him brought to the yacht.
"What happened to Sophia?" Ethan asked.
Greene looked terrified.
"She wasn't with them willingly."
The room became still.
Greene explained that Sophia had returned to Daniel after leaving the lake house.
She claimed she wanted back into the plan.
Daniel did not believe her.
Vivian searched her phone and found messages to Ethan.
They forced Sophia onto the yacht.
Several miles offshore, Sophia managed to lock Daniel out of the cabin long enough to send a distress signal.
Vivian attacked her.
Greene saw Sophia climb over the stern rail.
Then she jumped into the water.
Ethan closed his eyes.
She had escaped one trap by entering another.
Coast Guard crews found Sophia forty minutes later clinging to a navigation buoy.
She was hypothermic but alive.
At the hospital, she asked for Ethan.
He almost refused to go.
Richard told him he should.
"Not for her," Richard said.
"For yourself."
Ethan entered the hospital room alone.
Sophia looked smaller beneath the blankets.
Her hair was damp.
There were bruises on one wrist.
She did not cry when she saw him.
"I don't expect forgiveness."
Ethan remained near the door.
"Good."
She nodded.
"I went back because I wanted Daniel to believe I hadn't turned on them."
"Why?"
"I needed his phone."
Ethan's expression changed.
Sophia told him Daniel kept a separate encrypted phone containing account keys and messages with Vivian.
She believed it held proof of every transfer.
When Daniel realized she had tried to copy it, he took her to the yacht.
"Did you get anything?"
Sophia looked toward the bedside cabinet.
A police evidence bag sat there.
Inside was a tiny black memory card.
"Enough."
Ethan did not move.
"Why help now?"
Her eyes finally filled.
"Because I saw the line in the ledger with your name."
"You knew they were using me before."
"I knew they wanted control through you."
She swallowed.
"I didn't know Daniel planned to make you take the fall for all of it."
Ethan laughed bitterly.
"So framing my father was acceptable, but framing me crossed a line?"
Sophia closed her eyes.
"I know how that sounds."
"It sounds exactly like what happened."
He turned to leave.
"Ethan."
He stopped.
Sophia's voice was barely audible.
"There's one person Daniel was more afraid of than Vivian."
Ethan looked back.
"Who?"
"He called them the silent partner."
"Name."
"I never heard one."
Ethan's patience snapped.
"Then why tell me?"
Sophia looked at him.
"Because Daniel said the silent partner would still be inside Hale Industries after everyone else was gone."
Ethan went still.
Sophia continued.
"He said if the guardianship failed, that person had a second plan."
