Chapter 3 - The Man Who Held the Keys

Daniel Mercer had represented the Hale family for twenty-three years.

He had drafted Richard's estate documents.

He had handled Ethan's first business acquisition.

He had stood beside the family at funerals, weddings, lawsuits, and hospital beds.

Richard trusted him with documents he did not trust to banks.

That was why the name Mercer Holdings felt like a knife placed carefully between his ribs.

Officer Ramirez asked whether Richard recognized the destination account.

"No."

He swallowed.

"But I recognize the name."

Sophia interrupted.

"Mercer is a common name."

Richard looked at her.

"Not in my financial files."

Ethan called Daniel immediately.

The attorney answered on the second ring.

"Ethan, I was about to call you."

His voice was smooth and concerned.

"I received a very disturbing message from Sophia."

Ethan put the phone on speaker.

Sophia's face tightened.

"What message?"

Daniel paused.

"Sophia said Richard became violent."

Ethan looked at his father.

Richard's eyes stayed on the phone.

"There is security footage proving she staged it," Ethan said.

Silence.

Then Daniel breathed out slowly.

"That's... unexpected."

Richard stepped closer.

"Daniel, what is Mercer Holdings LLC?"

Another pause.

Longer this time.

"A dormant entity."

"Owned by whom?"

"It was created for a real estate transaction years ago."

"Owned by whom?"

Daniel's voice cooled.

"Technically, my office."

Officer Ramirez was writing everything down.

Richard spoke with careful precision.

"Why did someone just attempt to move one point eight million dollars from my family trust into an entity controlled by your office?"

Daniel did not answer.

The call ended.

Ethan stared at the phone.

He called back.

Voicemail.

He called Daniel's office.

A receptionist answered.

She said Mr. Mercer had left unexpectedly.

She did not know where he had gone.

Sophia sat down on the edge of the sofa.

Her hands were no longer shaking.

That frightened Ethan more than the crying had.

Officer Ramirez asked her whether she knew Daniel Mercer.

"Of course I know him."

"How well?"

"He's Ethan's family attorney."

"Have you spoken to him privately?"

Sophia hesitated.

"Sometimes."

Richard leaned forward.

"How many times?"

"Don't interrogate me."

"How many times?"

Officer Ramirez stopped him.

"Mr. Hale, let me handle the questions."

Richard stepped back.

Ethan rubbed both hands over his face.

Six weeks earlier, Sophia had insisted they meet Daniel to discuss a prenuptial agreement.

She had appeared reluctant.

She had told Ethan she hated talking about money.

She had even cried afterward, saying she feared Richard would always think she was with Ethan for his inheritance.

Now Ethan remembered something different.

During that meeting, Daniel and Sophia had spent almost fifteen minutes alone while Ethan took a business call in the hallway.

He had thought nothing of it.

He thought of it now.

Richard's phone rang.

It was the bank's fraud department.

He answered on speaker.

A representative confirmed that the attempted transfer had been blocked.

Then she said something worse.

There had been eleven transfers during the previous four months.

Total value: $3.4 million.

All had been approved through a secondary authorization process.

Richard asked which secondary user authorized them.

The answer was Ethan Hale.

Ethan sat down hard.

"I didn't."

The bank representative explained that each approval came from a registered device and required a one-time code.

Ethan looked at Sophia.

She did not look back.

"Where do the codes go?" Richard asked.

"To Mr. Ethan Hale's mobile number."

Ethan grabbed his phone.

He searched his messages.

There were no codes.

Then he remembered that Sophia had helped him move his phone service to a family business plan three months earlier.

She had said she could get a better rate through one of Richard's corporate accounts.

He opened his carrier settings.

Call and message forwarding had been activated.

A second number was listed.

He read it aloud.

Richard did not recognize it.

Officer Ramirez wrote it down.

Sophia finally spoke.

"This is ridiculous."

Ethan looked at her.

"Whose number is that?"

"I don't know."

He dialed it.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then a phone began vibrating inside the villa.

Not Sophia's phone.

The sound came from upstairs.

Everyone looked toward the staircase.

The vibrating continued.

Ethan walked toward the stairs.

Sophia stood abruptly.

"Don't."

He stopped.

Her voice had been too sharp.

"What's upstairs?" he asked.

She pressed her lips together.

Richard looked at Officer Ramirez.

"My house. My permission."

The officers followed Ethan upstairs.

The ringing led them to the guest bedroom Sophia had been using as a wedding-planning office.

Ethan opened the door.

On the desk sat a cheap black phone he had never seen before.

Its screen displayed his incoming call.

Beside it was Sophia's silver iPad.

And beneath the iPad was a blue folder stamped with Daniel Mercer's law firm logo.

Ethan opened it.

The first page was titled:

PETITION FOR EMERGENCY GUARDIANSHIP OF RICHARD HALE.

The proposed guardian was Ethan Hale.

The signature at the bottom was Ethan's.

He had never signed it.
