Chapter 4 - The Signature That Wasn't His

Ethan stared at the signature until the ink seemed to move.
It looked like his handwriting.
The angle was right.
The long stroke on the H was right.
Even the slight break before the final e was right.
But he knew he had never signed a guardianship petition against his father.
Officer Ramirez photographed the document without touching it.
"Do you recognize this paperwork?"
"No."
His voice sounded far away.
Sophia stood in the doorway behind them.
"You signed papers at Daniel's office."
Ethan turned.
"I signed a prenup draft and wedding trust forms."
"There were other documents."
"Not this."
Sophia's face shifted into wounded disbelief.
"You told me your father was getting worse."
Richard had reached the top of the stairs.
He stopped when he heard her.
"Worse?"
Ethan shook his head.
"I said he was tired after his surgery last year."
Sophia looked directly at Richard.
"You forget meetings."
"No, I don't."
"You accused the housekeeper of stealing your watch."
Richard's eyes narrowed.
"Because my watch disappeared."
"And then it was found in your bathroom."
Richard opened his mouth, then stopped.
Ethan remembered that incident.
He also remembered Sophia being the one who found the watch.
Officer Ramirez asked who had access to Richard's bedroom.
Everyone went quiet.
Sophia laughed once.
"You can't seriously think I planted a watch."
Richard spoke softly.
"I didn't."
He looked at Ethan.
"Until now."
Inside the blue folder were more documents.
A physician declaration claimed Richard showed signs of cognitive impairment.
A financial affidavit stated that he had made erratic transfers.
A draft court order would have temporarily transferred voting control of Hale Industries to Ethan if Richard were deemed incapacitated.
Ethan read every page with growing horror.
He finally understood why the attempted frame in the hallway had been so dramatic.
It was never just about making Richard look dangerous.
It was about making him look unstable.
Violent.
Confused.
Unfit to manage his own affairs.
Officer Ramirez pointed to the physician's declaration.
"Dr. Samuel Greene. Do you know him?"
Richard did.
"He was my neurologist after I fainted last winter."
Ethan looked up.
"You fainted because you were dehydrated."
Richard nodded.
"That's what the hospital said."
Sophia crossed her arms.
"A hospital discharge note doesn't mean your family hasn't noticed things."
Ethan's anger finally surfaced.
"Stop saying 'your family' like you're speaking for me."
Sophia flinched.
The reaction looked real this time.
"I was trying to protect you."
"By forging my signature?"
"I didn't forge anything."
"Then who did?"
She said nothing.
A notification sounded from the black burner phone on the desk.
The screen lit up.
A message preview appeared.
D.M.: DELETE THE MEDICAL FILES. LEAVE NOW.
Officer Ramirez saw it.
So did everyone else.
Sophia lunged toward the desk.
The second officer blocked her.
"Do not touch the phone."
Her mask cracked.
"You don't understand."
Ethan's voice went cold.
"Then explain it."
Sophia looked at him with tears forming again.
"Daniel said your father was going to destroy us."
"Us?"
"He said Richard was changing the trust."
Richard's face tightened.
That part was true.
He had instructed Daniel three months earlier to restructure the Hale family trust.
He had not told Ethan.
He had not told Sophia.
Only Daniel knew.
Ethan turned toward his father.
"Were you?"
Richard did not hide it.
"Yes."
"Why?"
Richard looked at the stolen banking files, the forged guardianship petition, and the woman Ethan had intended to marry.
"Because money was disappearing."
The room became still.
"I did not know who was taking it," Richard continued.
"I only knew the leak was inside the family circle."
Sophia whispered, "He was going to cut you out."
Richard looked at his son.
"No."
"Daniel said—"
"Daniel lied."
Richard's voice hardened.
"The new trust would have protected Ethan's inheritance from creditors, spouses, and unauthorized transfers."
Sophia's face changed.
Richard continued.
"It would also have required two independent trustees to approve withdrawals over fifty thousand dollars."
Ethan stared at Sophia.
She looked toward the bedroom window.
Officer Ramirez asked her to remain where she was.
Then the villa intercom chimed downstairs.
A man's voice came through the speaker.
"Mr. Hale, it's Marcus."
Richard went still.
The security manager had finally arrived.
"I need to speak with you alone," Marcus said through the intercom.
His breathing sounded ragged.
"Do not let Sophia leave the house."
Sophia's face went white.
Marcus continued.
"And whatever you do, don't trust Daniel Mercer."
May you like
A loud impact interrupted him.
Then the intercom went dead.
