Chapter 16 - The Boardroom Siege

The Hale Industries board met at nine o'clock the next morning.

By eight forty-five, reporters were already outside the building.

Someone had leaked the hallway accusation.

The headline was devastating.

AGING HALE CHAIRMAN ACCUSED OF ATTACKING SON'S FIANCEE.

The article mentioned no security footage.

It mentioned no forged guardianship petition.

It mentioned no arrest of Vivian Hale or Daniel Mercer.

It was designed to make Richard look guilty before the board entered the room.

Rebecca Sloan met him at the elevator.

She wore a charcoal suit and the calm expression of an executive managing a crisis.

"Richard, we should postpone."

He looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because half the board thinks you're compromised."

"Do you?"

Rebecca paused.

"I think perception matters."

Richard gave a faint smile.

"That's not what I asked."

She did not answer.

Ethan arrived beside Sophia.

A murmur moved through the lobby.

Sophia wore a plain navy dress, no engagement ring, and a concealed recording device authorized by investigators.

Most people assumed Ethan had brought her to support her accusation.

That assumption was intentional.

Richard looked at her only once.

Sophia could not hold his gaze.

Inside the boardroom, Peter Lang distributed emergency packets.

The first page proposed temporarily suspending Richard's authority pending an independent competency review.

The second page proposed appointing Rebecca Sloan interim chair.

The third page authorized a forensic review of transactions approved under Ethan's credentials.

It was a beautifully constructed trap.

Richard could oppose the competency review and look afraid of scrutiny.

Ethan could oppose the forensic review and look guilty of theft.

Rebecca could appear neutral while receiving control.

The meeting began.

Peter read the resolution aloud.

Richard listened without interrupting.

When Peter finished, Rebecca spoke.

"This is not a judgment."

Her tone was respectful.

"It is a protective measure for the company and for you."

Richard looked around the table.

"Who drafted it?"

Peter answered.

"Outside counsel."

"Which outside counsel?"

Peter hesitated.

Daniel Mercer's firm had been removed the night before.

"A replacement team."

Richard held out his hand.

"Name."

Rebecca stepped in.

"Richard, this hostility is exactly why—"

"Name."

The room went silent.

Peter finally said, "Bennett Strategic Legal."

Ethan looked at Sophia.

Her face went rigid.

Charles Bennett did not merely intend to influence the meeting.

He had drafted the emergency resolution.

Richard leaned back.

"Charles Bennett retired eleven years ago."

Rebecca said, "His consulting group remained active."

"And you hired it without board approval?"

"Emergency authority permits—"

"Emergency authority does not permit a COO to retain counsel controlled by a former executive under investigation."

Rebecca's eyes changed.

Only slightly.

But Ethan saw it.

The calm executive disappeared for half a second.

Something colder replaced her.

Peter called for a vote.

Richard raised a hand.

"Before we vote, Ethan has something to say."

Every face turned.

Ethan stood.

"I authorized transfers from family accounts."

Richard's head snapped toward him even though they had planned the sentence.

Sophia looked shocked.

The board erupted.

Ethan continued.

"At least, that's what the records show."

He placed copies of the forged documents on the table.

"My signatures were harvested from legitimate corporate paperwork and reused. My phone codes were forwarded. My device credentials were copied."

Rebecca interrupted.

"That is a convenient explanation."

Ethan looked directly at her.

"I agree."

Her expression tightened.

"Which is why I asked federal investigators to trace every destination account."

Peter shifted in his chair.

Rebecca remained still.

Sophia spoke for the first time.

"They should trace Bennett Strategic too."

Rebecca looked at her.

"Excuse me?"

Sophia's voice shook, but she continued.

"Charles Bennett isn't a consultant."

She took a breath.

"He's my father."

The boardroom exploded again.

Rebecca stood.

"This meeting is adjourned."

Richard did not move.

"Sit down."

Rebecca looked at him.

"You no longer have the authority to order me."

Peter pushed a document across the table.

It was a signed proxy agreement.

According to the paper, enough Hale family voting shares had been transferred into a temporary control trust to strip Richard of his majority.

The trustee was Rebecca Sloan.

Ethan stared at the signatures.

Richard's name.

Vivian's name.

Ethan's name.

All three.

Richard read the effective date.

It had taken effect at midnight.

Rebecca's expression became calm again.

"The board will proceed."

Richard looked at her.

"You are the silent partner."

Rebecca smiled faintly.

"No."

She turned toward Sophia.

"Her father is."

May you like

Then she looked back at Richard.

"I'm the person he chose to replace you."
