Chapter 19 - The Man from 2004

His name was Walter Price.

For twenty-seven years, Walter drove Thomas Hale everywhere.

He knew which banks Thomas visited.

He knew which lawyers entered through side doors.

He knew which documents traveled in locked briefcases.

He also knew every family secret discussed in the back seat by people who forgot a driver could hear.

Walter supposedly died in Arizona in 2012.

Richard had sent flowers to a funeral he did not attend.

Now Walter walked through the underground garage of Hale Industries wearing a maintenance jacket and carrying a black case.

Federal agents sealed the building.

Marcus tracked Walter through cameras.

He entered the old records level beneath the executive floors.

Richard immediately understood why.

Before records became digital, original corporate share ledgers were stored there.

If Walter destroyed the archives, the Class F share could still be challenged long enough to create chaos.

Ethan wanted to follow the agents.

Richard stopped him.

"We've done enough chasing people into rooms."

Ethan looked at him.

"You finally learned that?"

Richard almost smiled.

"Apparently late."

Agents found Walter in the archive room beside a shredding bin.

He did not resist.

The black case contained old ledgers, forged seals, and a satellite phone.

The most important item was a handwritten list of offshore access codes.

Walter asked to speak with Richard.

Investigators allowed a monitored conversation.

Walter looked much older than Richard remembered, but his eyes were the same.

Patient.

Observant.

"You were Charles's partner," Richard said.

Walter smiled faintly.

"At first."

Richard sat across from him.

"Why?"

"Your father made me invisible for twenty-seven years."

"So you stole from him?"

"No."

Walter leaned back.

"I sold information to Charles."

That information allowed Charles to learn when Thomas moved recovery funds, which accounts Daniel used, and when Caroline began investigating.

Walter never touched the money directly.

Charles paid him quietly.

When Charles's network grew, Walter became the silent logistical partner who moved documents and warned people when audits approached.

"Why fake your death?" Ethan asked.

Walter looked at him.

"Because your grandfather taught me the value of disappearing before anyone thinks to ask questions."

Richard felt no satisfaction in the answer.

"Where is Charles?"

Walter smiled again.

"Closer than you think."

Marcus received an alert at that exact moment.

The fire alarm activated on the executive floor.

Then the camera network went offline.

Richard looked toward the ceiling.

Walter's smile widened.

"He always liked distractions."

Security began evacuating the building.

Ethan grabbed Sophia's arm as people moved toward the stairs.

She pulled away.

"I can walk."

Richard stayed beside them.

Smoke was not visible.

The alarm appeared false.

As they reached the lobby, Marcus called Ethan.

"Do not go to the garage."

Ethan stopped.

"Why?"

"Charles is in the building."

Sophia went pale.

A voice behind them said,

"He's right."

Charles Bennett stood near the closed visitor desk.

He wore a dark overcoat and held no visible weapon.

He looked exactly like the photograph Sophia once described as belonging to a dead man.

For a moment, father and daughter simply stared at each other.

Charles looked disappointed rather than angry.

"You always were sentimental."

Sophia's face hardened.

"You told me sentiment was weakness."

"And you proved me right."

Federal agents moved in from both sides.

Charles did not run.

He lifted both hands slowly.

"Before you make a spectacle, Ethan should know something."

Ethan looked at him.

Richard said, "Don't listen."

Charles smiled.

"That's the Hale solution, isn't it? Don't listen. Don't look. Protect the family story."

Ethan stayed silent.

Charles continued.

"Your mother knew more than Richard has told you."

Richard's face tightened.

"Caroline told me everything she could prove."

Charles laughed.

"No, Richard. She told you what she thought you could survive."

An agent ordered Charles to turn around.

He obeyed.

As cuffs closed around his wrists, he looked at Sophia.

"Ask her why she really left the photograph in Richard's safe."

Ethan turned toward Sophia.

Richard did too.

Sophia went still.

Charles was led away.

Ethan waited.

"You said you didn't leave the photograph."

Sophia's eyes filled.

"I didn't."

Richard's voice was quiet.

"Then who did?"

Sophia looked toward Elise.

Elise shook her head.

"Not me."

Marcus frowned.

The photograph had appeared after Sophia opened the safe but before Richard discovered it.

Only a tiny number of people could have entered the study during that window.

Marcus pulled up the old snapshot server again.

At 4:02 a.m., there was a blurred image the modern system had missed.

A person entered the study wearing a hooded raincoat.

At 4:06, the person left.

Marcus enlarged the face.

Ethan stared.

Richard whispered,

"Dr. Greene."

The missing physician had entered the villa hours before Sophia's hallway performance.

And he had left the photograph that pointed them toward Vivian.
