Chapter 1: The Amber Trap

Chapter 1: The Amber Trap
The silence in the VIP suite was not empty; it was heavy, suffocating, and thick with the metallic scent of adrenaline and spilled champagne. It was the kind of silence that precedes a shockwave, freezing everyone in the room in a horrifying tableau.
Khloe Thorne lay crumpled against the freezing white marble of the hospital floor. Every single nerve ending in her body was screaming, emitting a relentless, white-hot siren of agony that pulsed from her lower spine all the way up to her ribs. The brutal impact of the marble console had knocked the breath completely out of her lungs, leaving her gasping like a drowning woman. Her white silk maternity gown—a custom piece designed specifically for tonight's charity gala—was soaked in a terrifying mixture of expensive vintage champagne and something distinctly darker.
My baby.
The thought cut through the physical torment like a jagged knife. Khloe’s hands, trembling so violently she could barely control her own fingers, remained locked in a protective cage over her swollen, seven-month belly. She tried to speak, tried to call out to her husband who stood paralyzed in the doorway, but the only sound that escaped her lips was a wet, ragged wheeze. Black spots danced wildly at the edges of her vision, threatening to pull her into the merciful oblivion of unconsciousness. But she fought it. She couldn't pass out. Not with her still in the room.
Across the glittering minefield of shattered crystal flute shards stood Isabella Rossi.
If anyone else had walked into the room at that precise second, they might have thought Isabella was a victim. As Marcus Thorne and the event coordinator, Elaine Parker, stood horrified in the doorway, Isabella executed the performance of a lifetime. The sadistic, triumphant smirk that had twisted her perfectly contoured face just seconds prior vanished completely. In its place was a mask of pure, unadulterated terror.
Tears—real, wet tears—welled in Isabella’s wide, doe-like eyes, spilling over her thick lashes and leaving faint streaks of mascara down her cheeks. Her manicured hands, which only moments ago had shoved a pregnant woman with lethal force, now shook uncontrollably near her chest. The crimson fabric of her designer gown heaved as she orchestrated a series of frantic, panicked breaths.
"She attacked me," Isabella whimpered, her voice a fragile, trembling whisper that seemed to echo loudly in the cavernous suite. She shrank back against the wall, pointing a shaking finger at the woman bleeding on the floor. "Marcus... I swear to God, I was just defending myself. She came at me. She was screaming that I was trying to ruin her life, and she just... she snapped."
Elaine Parker let out a muffled gasp, her hands flying to cover her mouth. The narrative was almost believable. High society was a vicious ecosystem, and the rumors of Khloe Thorne’s supposed jealousy toward the Rossi heiress had been heavily, secretly seeded by Isabella herself for months.
But Marcus Thorne was not the rest of the world.
Marcus was a man who had built a multi-billion-dollar tech empire by reading the minutiae of human behavior, by seeing the hidden variables in complex equations that everyone else missed. He didn't move toward Isabella to comfort her. He didn't even look at the tears streaming down her face.
His piercing gray eyes locked onto the vicious, unmistakable puncture wound on the left side of Khloe’s silk dress. The silk was torn, driven inward by a sharp, concentrated force.
A force exactly the size and shape of a stiletto heel.
"Khloe," Marcus breathed out, the word tearing from his throat in a raw, primal sound. The polished, untouchable billionaire facade shattered in an instant. He lunged forward, his expensive tuxedo trousers uncaringly absorbing the spilled champagne and blood as he dropped to his knees beside his wife.
"Don't move her!" Elaine shrieked from the doorway, finally finding her voice. "I'm calling the trauma team!"
"Do it now!" Marcus roared, a terrifying, thunderous sound that made Isabella flinch for real. He hovered his hands over Khloe, terrified that touching her might somehow inflict more pain. "Khloe, look at me. Keep your eyes on me, baby. Stay awake."
Khloe’s eyelids fluttered, heavy and uncooperative. "Marcus," she gasped out, her voice barely a thread of sound. Her fingers weakly grabbed a fistful of his tuxedo lapel. "The baby... she kicked me... she tried to..."
"I know," Marcus whispered fiercely, leaning his forehead against hers. His hand gently cupped the side of her face, his thumb stroking her pale cheek. "I know, sweetheart. I've got you. You're safe now."
Isabella watched this display of devotion, and beneath her mask of terror, a sickening cocktail of panic and rage began to boil. This wasn't how the script was supposed to go. Marcus was supposed to be confused. He was supposed to see Khloe acting hysterical, see Isabella in tears, and finally realize that his pregnant wife was mentally unhinged. He was supposed to comfort her.
"Marcus, you have to believe me," Isabella sobbed louder, taking a hesitant step forward, her crimson dress swishing softly against the floor. "She’s lying! She’s trying to manipulate you just like she always does! I didn't want to hurt her, but she lunged at my throat!"
"Shut your mouth," Marcus snarled without looking away from his wife. His voice was dangerously low, carrying a lethal promise. "If you take one more step toward my wife, I will personally throw you out of that window."
Isabella froze, her mouth opening and closing in shock. But before she could formulate another desperate lie, the heavy oak double doors of the VIP suite swung open for the third time that night.
The man who strode into the room did not wear a tuxedo. He wore a sharp, charcoal-gray suit, and the badge clipped to his lapel identified him as Richard Vance, the Chief Administrator of the hospital. He was also Khloe’s maternal uncle—a man who fiercely protected his family and wielded immense power within these pristine white walls.
Richard took in the catastrophic scene with terrifying clinical detachment. He saw his niece bleeding on the floor, the billionaire on his knees, and the socialite crying in the corner.
"She went crazy, Mr. Vance!" Isabella cried out, pivoting her victim routine to the newcomer. "Khloe completely lost her mind! I had to push her away to save myself!"
Richard didn't say a single word to her. He didn't offer a polite nod or a reassuring gesture. Instead, he reached into the inner pocket of his tailored jacket and slowly withdrew a slim, silver tablet. The screen was already glowing brilliantly in the dim amber light of the suite.
He walked past Isabella as if she were nothing more than a piece of discarded trash on the marble floor. He stopped a few feet away from Marcus and held the tablet out so the screen faced outward.
"I was in the downstairs security hub reviewing the perimeter feed for the gala when the alerts went off," Richard said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion. It was the calm before a devastating execution. "This VIP suite was outfitted with our new, upgraded high-definition surveillance system just last month. Audio-enabled. Thirty frames per second. No blind spots."
All the blood drained from Isabella’s face in a single, terrifying rush. Her skin turned an ashen, sickly gray. The frantic shaking of her hands stopped, replaced by a rigid, horrifying paralysis.
Richard tapped the screen of the tablet.
The crystal-clear audio from five minutes ago filled the silent room.
“You were never supposed to stand beside him.” Isabella’s recorded voice was chillingly cruel, echoing off the walls of the suite. “You were supposed to play the trophy, give him his heir... and vanish.”
Marcus’s head snapped up. His eyes, now black with an unfathomable, murderous rage, locked onto the screen.
The high-definition video showed it all. It showed Isabella closing the distance. It showed the violent, unprovoked two-handed shove that sent Khloe crashing backward into the console. It showed the champagne flute shattering.
And then, most damning of all, it showed Isabella Rossi stepping forward. It showed the mask of jealousy dissolving into pure, unadulterated sadism as she lifted her stiletto heel and drove it directly into the side of the helpless, pregnant woman on the floor.
The video looped, stopping on the frame of Isabella’s malicious, self-satisfied smile.
The silence that followed the recording was deafening. Isabella couldn't breathe. The walls of the luxurious suite felt like they were rapidly closing in on her, crushing the air from her lungs. Her perfect, calculated world was disintegrating in real-time.
"Marcus," Richard said softly, never taking his eyes off the trembling woman in the red dress. "Hospital security has locked down the elevators. I have four armed NYPD officers waiting in the lobby. Should I bring them up?"
Marcus stood up slowly. He carefully unbuttoned his ruined tuxedo jacket and let it drop to the floor. When he finally turned to face Isabella, there was no humanity left in his expression. It was the face of an apex predator looking at its prey.
"Bring them up," Marcus commanded softly. "And Richard? Tell them to bring handcuffs."
Isabella took a step backward, her Louboutin heels crunching loudly on the shattered crystal. "No," she whispered, her voice cracking as genuine panic finally set in. "No, wait. Marcus, you can't do this. My father—"
"Your father can't save you from a felony attempted murder charge, Isabella," Marcus interrupted, his voice dropping an octave. "You wanted a war. You wanted to destroy my family." He stepped closer, towering over her, radiating a cold, destructive energy. "Congratulations. You just detonated your own life."

Before Isabella could scream, the chaotic sound of heavy boots and walkie-talkies erupted from the hallway. At the exact same time, a team of medical personnel crashed through the doors with a rolling stretcher, shouting a barrage of medical codes and instantly swarming Khloe.
The trap had officially snapped shut. And there was absolutely no way out.
