Chapter 9: The Premature Arrival

Chapter 9: The Premature Arrival

Four weeks later.

The walls of the high-dependency maternity suite had become Khloe’s entire universe. For twenty-eight days, she had not moved past a forty-five-degree incline. She ate, slept, and breathed in the same bed, hooked up to a continuous rotation of IV fluids, blood pressure monitors, and the ever-present fetal heartbeat monitor.

The corporate bloodbath outside had concluded swiftly. Rossi Enterprises was dismantled, sold off in pieces to the highest bidders, with Marcus Thorne anonymously purchasing the Hudson Yards development for pennies on the dollar. Isabella remained in Rikers, awaiting trial, her high-society friends having abandoned her the second the video aired.

But inside Room 412, the only metric of success that mattered was the steady whoosh-whoosh of the baby’s heartbeat.

It was 2:00 AM on a rainy Tuesday. Marcus was asleep in the leather recliner beside Khloe’s bed, one hand resting protectively over the railing so Khloe could touch his fingers if she woke up.

Khloe was awake. She had been awake for an hour, staring at the ceiling, trying to breathe through a strange, heavy pressure building in her lower back. It wasn't the sharp, agonizing pain of the attack. It was a deep, rhythmic tightening that seemed to wrap around her entire torso.

She shifted slightly, wincing as a particularly strong wave of pressure seized her.

Suddenly, the fetal monitor on the wall let out a sharp, piercing alarm. The rhythmic whoosh-whoosh pattern became erratic, dipping dangerously low before spiking wildly.

Marcus jolted awake instantly, his military-like reflexes kicking in. He was on his feet before his eyes were fully open. "Khloe? What is it?"

"Marcus, my back," Khloe gasped, her hands flying to her stomach as another contraction ripped through her, stealing her breath. "It hurts. Something is wrong."

Before Marcus could even hit the call button, the door flew open. Dr. Aris rushed in, still tying her surgical mask behind her head, followed by a team of three nurses pulling a crash cart.

"Her blood pressure is spiking, one-sixty over one-ten!" a nurse shouted, checking the monitors. "Fetal heart rate is decelerating. We’re losing the baseline."

Dr. Aris didn't hesitate. She threw back the blanket and pressed her hands firmly against Khloe’s abdomen. Khloe cried out in pain.

"The placenta is fully abridging," Dr. Aris announced, her voice tight with adrenaline but entirely professional. "The trauma area has finally given out. We are out of time. Page the NICU team, tell them we are coming in hot. Prep OR Two right now!"

"Is he okay?" Khloe sobbed, her fingers digging into the bedsheets. Panic, cold and absolute, flooded her veins. "Dr. Aris, please, is my baby okay?"

"We are getting him out right now, Khloe. You have to stay with me," Dr. Aris said, grabbing the rails of the bed. "Push her! Go, go, go!"

The room erupted into controlled chaos. The nurses unlocked the wheels of the bed and shoved it toward the door. Marcus sprinted alongside them, his face pale, his jaw locked in a grim expression of terror.

They flew down the sterile, brightly lit corridors. The world blurred around Khloe. The pain was blinding now, a continuous, tearing sensation that made her vision go dark at the edges.

They hit the double doors of the surgical wing. A nurse turned to Marcus, holding up a hand. "Mr. Thorne, you have to scrub in. Room on the left, now!"

Marcus was shoved into a tiny room where an orderly threw a set of blue scrubs, a mask, and a hairnet at him. He stripped off his sweater and threw the scrubs on with shaking hands, scrubbing his arms in the sink with brutal force. It took less than sixty seconds, but to Marcus, it felt like a lifetime.

When he pushed through into Operating Room Two, Khloe was already prepped. A blue surgical drape blocked her view of her lower half. An anesthesiologist was stationed at her head, pushing medication into her IV.

Marcus rushed to her side, grabbing her hand. He leaned down, pressing his masked face against her forehead. "I'm here. I'm right here."

"I'm scared," Khloe whispered, tears slipping out of the corners of her eyes and soaking into her hair. "It's too early, Marcus. It’s only thirty-two weeks."

"He is a Thorne," Marcus said fiercely, locking his gray eyes onto hers, willing his own strength into her body. "He is exactly like you. He is not going to quit. Do you hear me? We do not quit."

"Scalpel," Dr. Aris commanded from the other side of the drape.

The silence in the room was deafening. The only sounds were the rhythmic beeping of the machines and the terrifyingly slow ticking of the wall clock. Marcus watched the seconds tick by. Every second felt like an hour. Every heartbeat felt like a drum.

Please, Marcus prayed to a God he hadn't spoken to since he was a child. Take everything I have. Take the money, take the company, take my life. Just let them live.

"I have him," Dr. Aris said suddenly. "Cord is clamped. Cutting now."

Marcus held his breath. Khloe squeezed his hand so hard her nails pierced his skin.

For three terrifying seconds, there was nothing. No sound. No cry. Just the frantic movements of the NICU team standing by with a heated incubator.

And then—it happened.

It wasn't a loud, booming wail. It was a small, reedy, furious cry. It was the sound of a tiny pair of lungs fighting for air and demanding to be heard.

"Baby boy," Dr. Aris announced, her voice breaking into a relieved smile beneath her mask. "Time of birth, 2:14 AM."

Khloe let out a sob that shook her entire body, her head falling back against the pillow. Marcus closed his eyes, his shoulders shaking as the crushing weight of the last month finally fractured.

The NICU nurses swarmed the baby, rapidly clearing his airway and wrapping him in specialized thermal blankets. A nurse brought the tiny bundle over to Khloe and Marcus for a fleeting, three-second glimpse.

Leo Thorne weighed barely four pounds. He was incredibly red, his tiny face scrunched up in anger, his little fists clenched tightly by his face.

"He's beautiful," Khloe wept, reaching out to graze a trembling finger over his tiny cheek before the nurses had to pull him away.

"He needs to go to the incubator now," the lead NICU nurse said gently. "We need to get him on oxygen. Dad, you can follow us up in a few minutes."

As they whisked Leo out of the room, Marcus pressed his lips to Khloe’s forehead. "You did it," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "You saved him, Khloe. You saved our family."
