Chapter 13: Skin-to-Skin

Back at the hospital, the sterile, humming atmosphere of the NICU felt entirely different today.

Khloe sat comfortably in a specialized reclining chair, her posture relaxed, her breathing steady. The continuous monitors beeped softly in the background, but today, they sang a song of triumph.

Dr. Aris and two senior NICU nurses stood around Incubator Number Four, carefully unhooking the non-essential monitors and gently detaching the tiny CPAP mask from Leo’s face. His lungs were finally strong enough to breathe the ambient air of the room completely on their own.

"Are you ready, Mom?" the nurse asked softly with a warm, encouraging smile.

Khloe nodded, a brilliant, tearful smile breaking across her face. "I'm ready."

With expert, delicate movements, the nurse lifted tiny Leo out of his glass enclosure. He weighed just over four and a half pounds now, a little bundle of warmth wrapped in a soft, blue-striped hospital blanket. They brought him over and placed him gently against Khloe’s chest, pulling the top of her hospital gown closed around his back.

The moment his tiny, fragile body made direct skin-to-skin contact with his mother, something miraculous happened.

Leo stopped his fussy squirming. His tiny head instinctively turned toward her heartbeat, his little mouth opening in a soft yawn before settling into a peaceful rhythm. His breathing synced perfectly with Khloe’s.

Khloe wrapped her arms around him, burying her face in his soft, wispy dark hair. Tears of pure, unadulterated joy streamed down her cheeks, washing away the final echoes of trauma, fear, and pain.

Marcus stood beside the chair, watching them. His throat tightened, and for the first time in months, the billionaire felt a tear slip down his own cheek. He reached out, resting one hand gently on the back of Khloe’s head and the other tiny, perfect hand of his son.

"Look at him," Khloe whispered, looking up at Marcus with shining eyes. "He's breathing all on his own."

"I told you," Marcus murmured, leaning down to press a tender kiss to Khloe’s lips and then to Leo’s tiny forehead. "He’s a Thorne. He’s a fighter."

Through the tall NICU windows, the afternoon sun finally broke through the Manhattan clouds, casting a warm, golden amber light across the room. The shadows of the past were completely gone, replaced by the bright, unbreakable future of a family that had survived the worst and emerged stronger than ever before.
