Chapter 4: The Brink of Ruin

Chapter 4: The Brink of Ruin
Two agonizing hours passed. The adrenaline that had sustained Marcus through the confrontation with Victor Rossi slowly drained away, leaving a hollow, aching void in his chest. He paced the length of the waiting room, wearing down the linoleum floor, jumping at every muffled sound that echoed from beyond the frosted glass of the surgical wing.
Finally, the electronic lock buzzed, and the heavy doors swung open.
Dr. Aris emerged. She had stripped off her surgical gown, but she still wore her blue scrubs and a surgical cap. Her face was drawn, etched with deep lines of exhaustion, but her eyes held a glimmer of something that made Marcus’s heart leap into his throat.
"Marcus," she said softly, approaching him.
"Tell me," he pleaded, bracing himself against the wall, terrified that his legs were about to give out.
"She's stable," Dr. Aris said, delivering the two most beautiful words Marcus had ever heard. He closed his eyes, letting out a ragged, shuddering breath as a solitary tear tracked through the dried blood on his face.
"The baby?" he choked out.
"Still safe, but it was incredibly close," the doctor explained, her tone turning deeply serious. "The blunt trauma caused a partial placental abruption. That means the placenta started to detach from the uterine wall, which is what triggered the severe pain and the drop in blood pressure. We managed to stabilize the bleeding with medication, and we administered a heavy dose of magnesium sulfate to halt the premature contractions."
"So she doesn't need to deliver tonight?"
"No. We stopped the labor. But Marcus, you need to understand the severity of this. The uterine environment is highly stressed. Khloe is going to be placed on strict, absolute bed rest for the remainder of her pregnancy. She cannot stand. She cannot walk. She stays flat on her back until that baby is fully developed. If she suffers any spike in blood pressure, any sudden physical stress, the placenta could fully detach. If that happens, we will have less than ten minutes to get the baby out before it’s fatal for both of them."
Marcus nodded slowly, processing the medical reality. The danger wasn't over. They had merely bought themselves time. "Can I see her?"
"She’s in the high-dependency maternity unit. She’s heavily sedated, but she is drifting in and out of consciousness. Go to her."
Marcus didn't need to be told twice. He pushed past the doctor, following a nurse through the labyrinth of the hospital until they reached Room 412.
The room was dim, illuminated only by the soft, rhythmic glow of various medical monitors. Khloe looked incredibly small in the center of the large hospital bed. An IV line snaked into her left hand, delivering fluids and painkillers. A thick, blue band was strapped across her swollen belly, continuously transmitting the steady, reassuring thump-thump of the fetal heartbeat to a monitor on the wall.
Marcus approached the bed like he was approaching a fragile piece of glass. He pulled up a chair, sinking into it, and carefully wrapped his large, warm hands around her cold one.
"I'm here, Khloe," he whispered, pressing a kiss to her knuckles.
Slowly, Khloe’s eyelashes fluttered. The heavy sedatives made her movements sluggish, but she turned her head toward the sound of his voice. Her eyes, usually bright and full of fire, were clouded with exhaustion and lingering fear.
"Marcus?" she mumbled, her voice thick and raspy.
"I'm right here, sweetheart."
Instinctively, Khloe’s free hand drifted down to touch her stomach. The panic flared in her eyes again, cutting through the medication. "Is he... did I lose..."
"He’s right there," Marcus said quickly, pointing to the monitor. "Do you hear that? That's our son. He's a fighter, just like his mother. He's safe. You're both safe."
Khloe let out a quiet sob of relief, the tension leaving her body as she listened to the rhythmic heartbeat on the machine. "It hurt so much, Marcus. She just... she looked at me, and she smiled, and then she kicked me."
"I know," Marcus said, his voice hardening despite his attempt to keep it soft. "I saw the tape, Khloe. Richard showed me."
Khloe swallowed hard, blinking back tears. "What happens now? Her father is going to spin this. He's going to ruin us. He'll say I fell, or that I attacked her first."
Marcus leaned forward, resting his elbows on the bed. He looked deeply into his wife’s eyes, making a silent vow that would echo through the elite circles of Manhattan for decades to come.
"Listen to me very carefully," Marcus said, his tone absolute and unwavering. "You are going to rest. You are going to focus on healing, and you are going to focus on bringing our son into this world. That is your only job."
"And what are you going to do?" Khloe whispered, sensing the dangerous shift in her husband’s demeanor.
"I am going to unleash hell," Marcus replied smoothly. "Isabella is currently sitting in a holding cell at the 19th Precinct. She is being charged with attempted murder. And by the time the sun comes up, Victor Rossi is going to realize that he picked a fight with the wrong family."
Khloe looked at the man she married. She saw the billionaire ruthlessness that he usually kept hidden behind locked boardroom doors, fully exposed and weaponized to protect her. For the first time since the attack in the suite, she felt a profound sense of safety.
"Burn them down, Marcus," Khloe whispered, her grip tightening weakly on his hand.
Marcus pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead. "To the absolute ground, my love. Sleep now. I'll handle the rest."
As Khloe’s eyes drifted shut, surrendering to the heavy pull of the sedatives, Marcus pulled out his phone. He opened a secure messaging app and sent a single text to his Chief Operating Officer and his lead legal counsel.
