Chapter 7: The Ten-Second Detonation

Chapter 7: The Ten-Second Detonation

The high-dependency maternity suite was a silent fortress. The heavy curtains were drawn, blocking out the aggressive midday sun. The only sounds were the quiet hum of the air purifier and the steady, beautiful whoosh-whoosh of the fetal heart monitor strapped to Khloe’s abdomen.

Khloe lay perfectly still, staring at the ceiling. The physical pain had dulled to a deep, agonizing ache thanks to the heavy IV medication, but the psychological terror remained sharp. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the crimson fabric of Isabella’s dress. She felt the impact of the marble console against her spine.

The door clicked open softly. Marcus stepped in, carrying a small vase of fresh white peonies. He looked exhausted, the shadows under his eyes dark and pronounced, but his posture immediately softened the moment he saw her looking at him.

"How are you feeling?" he asked, setting the flowers on the bedside table and taking his customary place in the chair beside her. He carefully threaded his fingers through hers, mindful of the IV line.

"Like I was hit by a truck," Khloe whispered, offering a weak, lopsided smile. "But the baby is kicking. He’s mad about being trapped in here."

Marcus smiled, leaning forward to press his forehead gently against her shoulder. "He’s a Thorne. We don't like being confined."

"Marcus," Khloe said, her tone shifting to one of quiet anxiety. "I saw my phone. I saw what Victor is saying to the press. They are calling me crazy. They are saying I made it up."

Marcus lifted his head, his jaw tightening instantly. He had ordered his staff to confiscate her phone, but she must have found a tablet. "Khloe, do not read that garbage. It's a dying man’s last desperate attempt at relevance."

"But people will believe it," she insisted, her voice trembling slightly. "Isabella spent months painting me as a jealous, paranoid wife to all of our friends. She laid the groundwork for this perfectly. If it goes to a jury, what if they believe her?"

Marcus looked at his wife, seeing the lingering fear in her beautiful eyes. He had wanted to wait. He had wanted to let Victor Rossi dig his grave all the way to the earth's core before dropping the dirt on him. But seeing Khloe’s distress completely changed his calculus. His wife’s peace of mind was worth infinitely more than a perfect corporate checkmate.

Marcus pulled his phone from his pocket and dialed a single number.

"Richard," Marcus said when Khloe’s uncle answered. "It's time. Release the Kraken."

He hung up without waiting for a response, putting the phone face down on the bedside table.

"Release what?" Khloe asked, blinking in confusion.

"Just watch," Marcus murmured, reaching for the television remote on the hospital bed railing. He clicked the screen on, tuning it to the largest, most-watched prime-time news network in the country.

For a few minutes, it was standard political coverage. But then, the anchor—a veteran journalist known for breaking massive scandals—interrupted the broadcast. She touched her earpiece, her eyes widening slightly as she read the breaking news alert on her teleprompter.

"We are interrupting our current broadcast to bring you a massive breaking story out of Manhattan," the anchor announced, her tone shifting to absolute gravity. "Since the early hours of this morning, rumors have swirled regarding an incident at the St. Jude's Children's Hospital Charity Gala involving tech billionaire Marcus Thorne’s pregnant wife, Khloe Thorne, and socialite Isabella Rossi. Earlier today, Victor Rossi claimed the incident was a tragic accident caused by a 'misunderstanding.'"

The screen transitioned from the anchor to a stark black background with a bold white warning label: WARNING: THE FOLLOWING FOOTAGE CONTAINS GRAPHIC VIOLENCE.

Khloe gasped, her grip on Marcus’s hand tightening like a vice.

Marcus didn't flinch. He just held her hand, anchoring her to the present.

The screen cut to the VIP suite. The video wasn't the full recording. Richard had expertly clipped a specific, devastating ten-second segment. It was just long enough to destroy a dynasty, but short enough to be replayed instantly across every social media platform on earth.

The audio crackled with terrifying clarity.

"You were never supposed to stand beside him. You were supposed to play the trophy, give him his heir... and vanish."

The camera showed Isabella lunging. It showed Khloe crashing into the console, crumbling to the floor, her hands desperately shielding her stomach. And then, in crystal-clear, horrifying high-definition, it showed Isabella Rossi stepping forward and driving her stiletto heel into Khloe’s side with calculated, sadistic force.

The clip ended, cutting back to the news anchor, who looked visibly shaken, her professional composure momentarily fractured.

"That footage," the anchor breathed, her voice trembling slightly, "was just released by an anonymous source within the hospital's administration. We can now confirm that Isabella Rossi is currently being transferred to Rikers Island without bail, facing charges of attempted murder in the second degree."

In the hospital room, the silence was profound.

"It's out," Khloe whispered, tears of profound relief finally spilling over her cheeks. The truth was out there. The gaslighting was over.

Marcus’s phone suddenly erupted. It buzzed, chimed, and vibrated violently against the bedside table as thousands of emails, texts, and calls flooded in from board members, politicians, and friends who had just witnessed the broadcast.

Marcus calmly reached over, picked up the phone, and powered it completely off.

He looked back at his wife, wiping a tear from her cheek with his thumb.

"The entire world knows the truth now, Khloe," Marcus said softly, his gray eyes burning with fierce, protective devotion. "Victor Rossi’s stock is going to drop to zero by midnight. His board will force him out by morning. And Isabella is never going to see the outside of a prison cell again. The war is over. You won."
