.Chapter 5: The War Room

Dawn broke over Manhattan, painting the skyline in bruised shades of purple and gold. But inside the temporary command center Marcus Thorne had established in a vacant VIP suite adjacent to Khloe’s, there was no sunrise. There was only the harsh glow of laptops, the rapid-fire clicking of keyboards, and the scent of stale black coffee.

Marcus hadn't slept a single minute. He had traded his blood-stained dress shirt for a dark cashmere sweater brought by his assistant, but his eyes remained sharp, cold, and hyper-focused. He stood at the head of a long mahogany conference table that had been hastily rolled into the room, surrounded by the most lethal corporate and legal minds on his payroll.

"I want a complete diagnostic on Rossi Enterprises' vulnerabilities," Marcus ordered, his voice raspy but commanding. He pointed to his Chief Financial Officer, David Chen, who was dialing into the room via a secure monitor. "Victor Rossi’s empire is heavily leveraged in commercial real estate. I want to know exactly which loans are maturing in the next ninety days."

"Most of his debt is tied up in the new Hudson Yards development," David replied, pulling up a complex spreadsheet on the screen. "He owes about eight hundred million to a syndicate led by Sterling Bank. If his stock drops past a certain threshold, it triggers a margin call. He’ll have to liquidate assets instantly to cover it."

"Then we make the stock drop," Marcus stated flatly. "Initiate heavy short-selling through our proxy firms. I want a massive, sudden lack of confidence in the market the minute the bell rings on Wall Street. Bleed him out."

"Marcus," interrupted Elias Vance, Khloe’s cousin and a senior partner at New York’s most aggressive defense firm. Elias was leaning against the window, his arms crossed. "You need to know what Victor is doing right now. His crisis PR team has been working the phones since 3:00 AM. They are trying to get ahead of the arrest."

Marcus slowly turned his head. "What is his narrative?"

Elias pulled up an article on his tablet and slid it across the table. It was a digital exclusive from a notorious, high-society gossip column. The headline read: GALA TRAGEDY: DID PREGNANCY HORMONES DRIVE BILLIONAIRE'S WIFE TO ATTACK HEIRESS?

A muscle feathered in Marcus’s jaw as he scanned the text. The article, clearly fed by Victor’s deep pockets, painted Khloe as deeply insecure, claiming she had been harassing Isabella for months out of paranoid jealousy. It suggested Khloe had hysterically confronted Isabella in the suite, slipped on a spilled drink, and violently injured herself while Isabella bravely tried to catch her.

"He's framing Khloe as unstable," Elias said quietly, watching the lethal calm settle over Marcus. "Victor's lawyers are arguing self-defense for Isabella. They are demanding a closed bail hearing at nine o'clock this morning, citing that Isabella is the 'real' victim of a traumatic assault."

"He wants to play the media game," Marcus murmured, his fingers trailing lightly over the edge of the tablet. The sheer audacity of Victor Rossi trying to spin the attempted murder of a pregnant woman into a PR victory was staggering. It wasn't just insulting; it was a fatal miscalculation.

"Do we release the security footage?" asked Sarah Jenkins, Marcus’s formidable head of Public Relations. "We can squash this narrative in five minutes."

May you like

"No," Marcus said, his gray eyes flashing with dark calculation. "Not yet. If we release it now, Victor’s lawyers will claim it's a doctored deepfake and drag us into a tech debate. We let Victor dig his grave deeper. Let him lie to his board of directors. Let him lie to his shareholders. Let him double down on this pathetic defense."

Marcus looked back at the screen displaying the financial data. "Elias, I want you at that bail hearing. I want you to sit in the front row and let the judge know the Thorne family is watching. And David? When the market opens, I want you to execute the first phase of Project Icarus. Break his legs before he even realizes he's in a fight."
