Chapter 1 - THE HAND SHE SHOULD NEVER HAVE RAISED -“Don’t you dare lay another hand on him!”

Lily Carter’s voice ripped through the marble foyer of Blackwood Manor.
Five-year-old Ethan Blackwood lay curled beside the bottom stair, clutching his left wrist against his chest.
His small face was soaked with tears.
A red mark burned across his cheek.
Standing over him was Vanessa Crane, the elegant woman who was supposed to marry his father in less than three weeks.
Her diamond bracelet flashed as she raised her hand again.
Lily did not hesitate.
She rushed between them and caught Vanessa’s wrist before the second blow could land.
Vanessa screamed.
“Aah!”
She twisted violently, but Lily refused to let go.
“You filthy little servant!”
Vanessa swung her free hand toward Lily’s face.
Before she could strike, a deep voice thundered from the doorway.
“Touch my son one more time, and you’ll regret it for the rest of your life.”
Everyone froze.
Adrian Blackwood stood beneath the arched entrance with rainwater dripping from his black overcoat.
He had returned from New York two days earlier than expected.
His steel-gray eyes moved from Vanessa’s raised hand to Ethan’s bruised cheek.
Then they settled on Lily.
She was kneeling beside the boy, shielding him with her body.
Vanessa immediately lowered her arm.
“Adrian, thank goodness you’re here.”
She forced a trembling smile.
“This looks terrible, but Ethan became violent.”
“He attacked me.”
Ethan’s breathing broke into frightened gasps.
“I didn’t.”
Vanessa pointed at him.
“He threw a glass at me.”
“He kicked me.”
“I was only trying to discipline him.”
Adrian crossed the foyer slowly.
Every step echoed against the stone walls.
Ethan shrank against Lily.
Lily placed one hand over the boy’s hair.
“He’s safe now.”
Her eyes remained fixed on Vanessa.
“She’ll never hurt him again.”
Vanessa stared at her with pure hatred.
“You have no right to make promises in this house.”
Adrian stopped beside his son.
He lowered himself onto one knee.
“Ethan.”
The boy would not look at him.
Adrian’s face changed.
The anger remained, but guilt moved beneath it.
“Look at me, buddy.”
Ethan finally lifted his eyes.
“Are you hurt?”
Ethan nodded.
“My wrist.”
Adrian reached for him.
The boy flinched so violently that Adrian pulled his hand back.
The reaction struck him harder than any accusation.
He turned toward Vanessa.
“What did you do?”
Vanessa began crying instantly.
“Please forgive me.”
“I was only trying to discipline him.”
“He has been impossible since you left.”
“He lies.”
“He breaks things.”
“He screams whenever I come near him.”
“Maybe you should have wondered why.”
Lily’s voice was low.
Vanessa glared at her.
Adrian stood.
“Get her out of my house before I do something I’ll never regret.”
The security guards at the far end of the hall exchanged nervous glances.
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“Adrian, you cannot mean that.”
“We’re getting married.”
“Not anymore.”
Her mouth fell open.
Adrian removed the platinum engagement ring from the chain around his neck and dropped it onto the marble floor.
The small metallic sound seemed louder than thunder.
Vanessa stared at the ring.
Then she looked at Lily.
“This is her fault.”
“She has been filling your son’s head with lies.”
“She wants my place.”
“She wants your money.”
Lily’s cheeks burned.
Adrian did not look away from Vanessa.
“Take whatever belongs to you.”
“You have ten minutes.”
“You cannot throw me out like some criminal.”
“Watch me.”
Vanessa’s crying stopped.
For one brief second, something cold and calculating replaced the panic in her eyes.
Then she leaned close enough for Adrian alone to hear.
“You should be careful.”
“You don’t know what your precious maid has been hiding.”
Adrian’s expression did not change.
“What are you talking about?”
Vanessa smiled faintly.
“Ask her why she was in your late wife’s bedroom last night.”
Lily’s heart stopped.
Adrian turned toward her.
The room seemed to narrow around them.
His wife, Claire, had died three years earlier.
Her private rooms had remained locked ever since.
Only Adrian possessed a key.
At least, that was what he believed.
Vanessa watched Lily’s face carefully.
“She thought no one saw her.”
“But I did.”
Adrian’s voice was quiet.
“Lily?”
Ethan tightened his arms around Lily’s waist.
She looked down at him.
The fear in his eyes reminded her why she had entered Claire’s bedroom.
It reminded her of the envelope hidden beneath the loose floorboard.
It reminded her of the photograph she had found inside.
And it reminded her of the handwritten message on the back.
If anything happens to me, do not trust the woman wearing the silver bird.
Vanessa wore a silver crane brooch every day.
Lily slowly rose.
“There is something you need to see.”
Vanessa’s eyes sharpened.
“Do not listen to her.”
Adrian held up one hand.
The guards escorted Vanessa toward the east wing.
She fought them at first.
Then she stopped beneath the staircase and looked directly at Ethan.
Her smile was small and terrifying.
“You think your little maid saved you?”
Ethan buried his face against Lily’s dress.
Vanessa continued.
“She has only made things worse.”
Adrian stepped toward her.
“Get her out.”
The guards pulled Vanessa away.
Her heels struck the marble in furious, uneven beats.
When the front doors finally closed, silence filled the manor.
Adrian looked at Lily.
“What did you find in Claire’s room?”
Lily reached into the pocket of her uniform.
Her fingers closed around a small brass key.
Before she could answer, a loud crash came from upstairs.
Then the manor’s security alarm began screaming.
A guard’s voice burst from Adrian’s radio.
“Mr. Blackwood, someone has broken into your late wife’s bedroom.”
Adrian looked toward the staircase.
Lily’s blood turned cold.
May you like
The envelope was still beneath the floor.
And whoever had broken into the room knew exactly where to look.
