Chapter 13 - THE SECRET CLAIRE COULD NOT BURY -Adrian believed he had heard incorrectly.

“Claire?”
Marcus closed his eyes.
“She made a deal with Evelyn.”
“When?”
“Two years ago.”
“You’re lying.”
“I wish I were.”
Marcus explained that Claire had contacted him after escaping Voss’s first facility.
She asked him to help her enter the manor secretly.
At first, he believed she only wanted to watch Ethan and gather evidence.
Then Claire began communicating with Evelyn.
She offered information about Julian’s movements in exchange for Grace’s safety.
Marcus had intercepted several messages.
He never knew the full terms.
Adrian left the hospital room feeling numb.
Claire was in Grace’s room brushing the child’s hair.
Ethan slept nearby.
For a moment, the scene looked peaceful.
It looked like the life stolen from them.
Then Adrian noticed a black phone inside Claire’s open bag.
It was not the phone federal agents had issued.
He removed it.
The screen required a passcode.
Claire saw him.
Her face changed.
“Give me that.”
“What did you promise my mother?”
She went still.
Adrian’s voice remained quiet.
“That was your agreement with Evelyn.”
Claire closed the door to the children’s room.
“I promised to remain dead.”
“What else?”
“I gave her information about Julian.”
“Why?”
“Because she controlled Grace’s location.”
“You worked with the woman who ordered your murder.”
“I kept our daughter alive.”
“You also allowed Ethan to live with Vanessa.”
Pain flashed across Claire’s face.
“I believed you would protect him.”
“I didn’t know Vanessa was hurting him.”
“You were watching the house.”
“Not every room.”
Adrian unlocked the phone using the date of their wedding anniversary.
Messages appeared.
Many were between Claire and Evelyn.
Most involved Grace.
But several referred to Lily.
One message from Claire read:
The girl is in place.
She has earned Ethan’s trust.
Evelyn replied:
Then make certain Adrian trusts her too.
Adrian stared at Claire.
“You and my mother placed Lily in this house together.”
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“I chose Lily.”
“Evelyn discovered what I had done.”
“She threatened to remove her unless I cooperated.”
“What was Lily supposed to do?”
“Protect Ethan.”
“Nothing more?”
Claire did not answer.
Adrian continued scrolling.
A later message read:
If Adrian becomes emotionally dependent on the maid, the transition will be easier.
His stomach turned.
“What transition?”
Claire looked toward the sleeping children.
“Evelyn believed you were becoming unstable.”
“She wanted the board to remove you.”
“She planned to use your relationship with Lily as evidence that you were emotionally compromised.”
“Did you help her?”
“I delayed her.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
Claire finally admitted that she had provided Evelyn with limited information.
In return, Evelyn sent proof that Grace was alive.
Claire convinced herself she could control the arrangement.
She believed she was sacrificing Adrian’s reputation to save their daughter’s life.
“I never intended for you to lose the company permanently.”
Adrian laughed once without humor.
“You decided what I could afford to lose.”
“I was desperate.”
“So was I.”
“I buried you.”
“I raised Ethan alone.”
“I blamed myself every day.”
Claire began crying.
“I know.”
“No.”
“You watched me.”
“You saw what I became.”
“And you still did not come home.”
“I was afraid.”
“Of Evelyn?”
“Of what you would think of me.”
The honesty broke something between them.
Claire had survived unspeakable cruelty.
She had also made choices that harmed others.
Both truths existed at once.
Adrian placed the phone on the table.
“Does Evelyn still have someone inside the board?”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
“She used a code name.”
“What name?”
“The Shepherd.”
Federal investigators searched the messages.
The Shepherd had approved Northstar payments.
He had ordered evidence destroyed.
He had arranged Vanessa’s escape from police custody.
He had also received updates about Adrian’s movements from inside Blackwood Industries.
The board scheduled an emergency meeting for the following morning.
Despite the arrests, several directors planned to remove Adrian as chairman.
News of Claire’s survival had leaked.
Reporters surrounded the hospital.
Anonymous sources accused Adrian of hiding his wife, staging insurance fraud, and misusing corporate funds to conduct private rescue operations.
The public narrative was turning against him.
Evelyn’s network remained active.
Adrian decided to attend the board meeting.
Claire wanted to help.
He shook his head.
“You have helped enough in secret.”
The words wounded her.
Lily found Claire alone in the hallway later.
Claire looked exhausted.
“You should hate me.”
Lily sat beside her.
“I don’t know enough to hate you.”
“I put you in danger.”
“You also gave me the chance to protect Ethan.”
“I used you.”
“Yes.”
Claire looked at her.
The answer contained no cruelty.
Only truth.
Lily continued.
“People can save someone and still betray them.”
“They can love someone and still make selfish choices.”
“What matters now is what you do after the truth is known.”
Claire wiped her face.
“What should I do?”
“Stop hiding.”
At the board meeting the next morning, Adrian entered alone.
Fourteen directors sat around the long glass table.
His father’s portrait hung on the wall.
At the far end sat board vice chairman Richard Cole.
Richard had served the family for thirty years.
He had taught Adrian how to read financial reports.
He had attended Ethan’s baptism.
He had comforted Adrian at Claire’s funeral.
Richard began the meeting.
“Adrian, this board has lost confidence in your leadership.”
Adrian placed a folder on the table.
“Before you vote, I have a question.”
He looked around the room.
“Which one of you is the Shepherd?”
No one moved.
Then the doors opened.
Claire entered with Lily, Ethan, and Grace.
Cameras followed them.
Claire walked to the center of the room.
“My husband did not hide me.”
“I hid from him.”
“I helped Evelyn Blackwood manipulate this company.”
“And I will provide every record I have.”
Richard Cole’s expression remained calm.
But Ethan pointed toward his cuff link.
It was shaped like a silver shepherd’s staff.
“That’s the symbol from Grandma’s papers.”
Every head turned toward Richard.
He smiled faintly.
Then he pressed a button beneath the table.
The boardroom doors locked.
Steel shutters dropped across the windows.
May you like
Richard looked at Adrian.
“You should never bring children to a corporate execution.”
