Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD -Julian stared at Claire as if a ghost had walked into the room.

Vanessa’s face drained of color.
Ethan stopped breathing for a moment.
Then he whispered again.
“Mommy?”
Claire’s hands trembled around the pistol.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Hello, my sweet boy.”
Ethan tried to run toward her.
Julian tightened his grip.
“Stay where you are.”
Claire raised the weapon higher.
“If you hurt him, I will shoot you.”
Julian laughed nervously.
“You were never capable of violence.”
“You changed that.”
The hidden passage behind Claire led into the manor’s original service tunnels.
The Blackwood house had been built during the 1920s.
Only a few members of the family knew the tunnels existed.
Claire had used them to enter without triggering the compromised security system.
Lily moved slightly closer to Ethan.
Julian noticed.
“Don’t.”
She stopped.
Vanessa backed toward the door.
Claire shifted the pistol toward her.
“You stay too.”
Vanessa lifted both hands.
“I had nothing to do with your accident.”
Claire’s expression turned cold.
“You gave me the pills.”
“You replaced my medication.”
“Julian forced me.”
“That is a lie.”
Julian pushed Ethan toward Vanessa and raised his own gun.
Claire fired first.
The bullet struck Julian’s shoulder.
He screamed and dropped the weapon.
Lily lunged forward.
She grabbed Ethan and pulled him behind a sofa.
Vanessa rushed toward Claire.
The two women collided near the fireplace.
Vanessa clawed at Claire’s injured face.
Claire struck her with the side of the pistol.
Julian crawled toward his fallen weapon.
Lily saw him.
“Claire!”
Claire turned.
Julian’s fingers closed around the gun.
Before he could lift it, Ethan picked up a heavy brass horse from the floor and threw it.
The statue struck Julian’s injured shoulder.
He cried out.
Lily kicked the pistol beneath the sofa.
Julian grabbed her ankle.
She fell hard.
He dragged her toward him.
“You have ruined everything.”
Lily kicked him in the jaw.
His grip loosened.
Claire shoved Vanessa against the wall.
“Where is the shutdown code?”
Vanessa laughed through a bleeding lip.
“You think I know?”
“You helped install the system.”
“I did what Julian told me.”
The monitor showed less than four minutes remaining.
At the greenhouse, Adrian and Marcus had removed the outer casing from the device.
They discovered three identical wires.
Cutting the wrong one would trigger the gas immediately.
Thomas Hale struggled against the ropes.
“There is a manual override in the old boiler room.”
Marcus looked at Adrian.
“That’s beneath the manor.”
Adrian tried his radio again.
Static cracked.
Then a child’s voice came through.
“Daddy?”
Adrian gripped the device.
“Ethan?”
The transmission faded.
“Daddy, Mommy is here.”
Adrian stared at Marcus.
The words made no sense.
Then Claire’s voice came over the radio.
“Adrian, the shutdown code is connected to Ethan’s birthday.”
Adrian’s heart stopped.
“Claire?”
“There’s no time.”
“Use the date we brought him home.”
The signal vanished.
Adrian entered the six-digit date into the device.
The timer stopped with twenty-seven seconds remaining.
The gas system shut down.
At the manor, the vents closed.
Emergency lights returned.
Julian looked toward the monitor.
“No.”
Marcus’s team stormed the west corridor minutes later.
They found the locked room open.
Vanessa was unconscious against the wall.
Julian had disappeared.
A trail of blood led into the hidden passage.
Claire stood in the center of the room with Ethan clinging to her waist.
Lily sat on the floor, pressing a cloth to the cut near her temple.
Then Adrian entered.
He saw Claire.
Everything inside him seemed to collapse.
For three years, he had visited her grave.
For three years, he had blamed himself for her death.
For three years, he had tried to teach Ethan how to live without his mother.
Claire looked at him with an expression filled with love, anger, and unbearable distance.
“Adrian.”
He moved one step closer.
“You’re alive.”
Her eyes lowered.
“I didn’t know how to come home.”
Ethan reached for his father.
Adrian crossed the room and wrapped his arms around both of them.
For a moment, the conspiracy, the blood, and the alarms disappeared.
They were a family again.
Then Claire pulled away.
“Julian escaped through the tunnels.”
Marcus ordered every exit secured.
Security teams entered the passage.
They found blood on the stone steps.
At the far end, an exterior hatch stood open.
Julian had taken a vehicle from the maintenance garage.
Vanessa regained consciousness while officers restrained her.
She looked at Claire with hatred.
“You should have stayed dead.”
Claire stared back.
“You should have made sure.”
Police arrived and arrested Vanessa.
Before they took her away, she called to Adrian.
“Ask your wife why she waited three years.”
“Ask her what she did while you believed she was dead.”
Claire’s expression shifted.
Adrian noticed.
“What is she talking about?”
Claire looked at Ethan.
“Not here.”
Lily rose carefully.
“You need a doctor.”
Claire shook her head.
“No hospitals.”
The same fear Ethan had shown appeared in her eyes.
Adrian led everyone to the secure study.
Marcus remained near the door.
Claire sat beside Ethan.
She held his face in her hands as if memorizing every detail.
Then Adrian asked the question he had been afraid to speak.
“What happened after the crash?”
Claire took a long breath.
“I woke in a private clinic.”
“Julian was there.”
“He told me you and Ethan had died in the accident.”
Adrian closed his eyes briefly.
Claire continued.
“I tried to escape.”
“They drugged me.”
“They kept me in different facilities for almost a year.”
“Eventually, a nurse helped me run.”
“Why didn’t you contact me?”
“Because I learned Julian had people inside the police, inside the company, and inside this house.”
“I believed approaching you would put Ethan in danger.”
Adrian’s voice hardened.
“He was already in danger.”
“I know.”
Claire looked toward Lily.
“That is why I chose her.”
Lily stared at her.
“What do you mean?”
Claire reached beneath her coat and removed a photograph.
It showed Lily standing outside a children’s home fifteen years earlier.
Beside her stood Claire.
Lily was stunned.
“I don’t remember this.”
“You were thirteen.”
“You protected a younger child from one of the supervisors.”
“I never forgot you.”
Claire had secretly arranged for Lily to be hired at Blackwood Manor.
She had sent anonymous recommendations.
She had placed someone courageous near Ethan because she could not return herself.
Adrian looked between them.
“You have been watching us.”
Claire nodded.
“From a distance.”
“Then you know who helped Julian.”
“I know some of them.”
“Not all.”
She removed a small drive from her pocket.
“This contains financial records, clinic logs, and recordings.”
“It can destroy Julian.”
Marcus connected it to an isolated computer.
Folders appeared across the screen.
One was labeled PROJECT HEIR.
Inside were surveillance photographs of Ethan.
Medical reports.
Guardianship documents.
And a life insurance policy issued in Adrian’s name.
The beneficiary was Vanessa Crane.
The policy became active at midnight on the day of their planned wedding.
Another document listed the next stage of the operation.
CLAIRE BLACKWOOD: RECOVERY SUBJECT.
STATUS: RELOCATED.
CURRENT LOCATION: UNKNOWN.
A final line appeared beneath it.
SECOND SUBJECT SECURED.
Adrian frowned.
“What second subject?”
Claire’s face filled with terror.
Before she could answer, Marcus opened another file.
A photograph filled the screen.
It showed a little girl sleeping behind a locked glass door.
She had Adrian’s dark hair and Claire’s gray eyes.
Claire whispered through tears.
May you like
“Her name is Grace.”
“She is our daughter.”
