Chapter 10 - THE EVIDENCE IN THE MAID’S POCKET -Every face turned toward Lily.

She stared at the evidence bag.

“I did not put that there.”

The federal agent, Daniel Hayes, remained calm.

“Miss Carter, you were in possession of critical evidence without disclosing it.”

“I didn’t know it was there.”

Marcus stepped forward.

“She has been searched twice today.”

“Then someone placed it on her after the island rescue.”

Agent Hayes looked around the helicopter cabin.

“Who had access to her?”

Adrian answered.

“Almost everyone.”

Lily remembered Evelyn crashing into her on the roof.

Claire holding her waist.

Marcus helping her board the aircraft.

Several medics examining the cut near her temple.

Any of them could have planted the card.

Agent Hayes sealed it for analysis.

Until investigators confirmed its contents, Lily was asked not to leave federal custody.

Ethan immediately protested.

“She didn’t do anything.”

Adrian placed a hand on his shoulder.

“They are not arresting her.”

“Then why can’t she come home?”

No one answered directly.

At the federal medical center, Grace underwent a full examination.

Doctors found traces of long-term sedatives in her blood.

She was underweight.

Old needle marks covered both arms.

Claire refused to leave her bedside.

Ethan sat near the window drawing a picture of the family.

He included Lily beside them.

Adrian noticed.

He also noticed that Ethan had not drawn Vanessa.

That night, federal technicians recovered the memory card.

It did contain Evelyn’s confession.

But several sections had been deleted.

The missing sections involved the identities of politicians, executives, and officials connected to Northstar.

The deletion occurred twenty minutes after the rooftop confrontation.

At that time, the card had supposedly been in Lily’s pocket.

Agent Hayes questioned her.

“Did you know the card contained names?”

“No.”

“Do you have technical experience?”

“No.”

“Have you received payments from any Blackwood company?”

“My salary.”

“Anything else?”

Lily hesitated.

A small educational trust had paid for her nursing courses before she became a maid.

She never knew the donor’s identity.

Claire had already admitted arranging her employment.

It was possible she funded the courses too.

Hayes examined the records.

The trust was controlled through a shell company linked to Julian.

Lily’s face went pale.

“He paid for my education?”

“Possibly.”

Adrian refused to believe she had knowingly worked for Julian.

But the evidence created doubt among investigators.

Lily had access to Ethan.

She had entered Claire’s bedroom.

Claire’s medication was found in her room.

The stolen access card belonged to her.

Now the memory card was discovered in her coat.

Someone had spent months constructing a case against her.

Claire joined the interview.

“She was selected because she protected children.”

“Julian may have discovered my plan and used the trust to make her appear compromised.”

Hayes looked at Claire.

“You operated secretly for three years.”

“You altered personnel decisions.”

“You entered the manor through hidden tunnels.”

“You withheld evidence from your husband and the authorities.”

“You are not an objective witness.”

Claire’s expression hardened.

“I was trying to keep my children alive.”

“And someone used your secrecy to hide their own actions.”

The interview ended without charges.

Lily remained in a protected room.

Adrian visited after midnight.

She stood beside the window overlooking the parking lot.

“You should be with your family,” she said.

“You protected my family when I didn’t.”

“That doesn’t mean you owe me blind trust.”

“I don’t trust blindly anymore.”

He placed the photograph from Claire’s envelope on the table.

“I trust patterns.”

“Every time Ethan was in danger, you moved toward him.”

“Every time you could have escaped, you stayed.”

Lily looked down.

“That still doesn’t explain the card.”

“No.”

“Or the money.”

“No.”

“Then part of you doubts me.”

Adrian did not lie.

“Part of me doubts everyone.”

The honesty hurt less than reassurance would have.

Lily nodded.

“You should.”

A nurse entered.

Grace was awake and asking for Lily.

They went to her room.

Grace sat beneath the blankets clutching the stuffed rabbit from the island.

Claire rested in a chair nearby.

Ethan slept on the couch.

Grace looked at Lily.

“Dr. Voss said you were coming.”

Lily stopped.

“When?”

“Before the loud alarm.”

“What did he say?”

“He said a maid would take me home.”

“He showed me your picture.”

Adrian and Claire exchanged looks.

“How long ago?” Claire asked.

Grace counted silently.

“Many sleeps.”

Julian had known about Lily long before the rescue.

He may have planned to use her as the final scapegoat.

Grace continued.

“Dr. Voss said Lily had another name.”

“What name?” Lily asked.

Grace whispered.

“Laura Voss.”

The room became silent.

Lily shook her head.

“My name has always been Lily Carter.”

Claire stood slowly.

“Voss had a daughter named Laura.”

“She disappeared after a house fire twenty-two years ago.”

Lily remembered almost nothing before entering foster care at age six.

Her birth records had been reconstructed after the fire.

The age matched.

Adrian looked at her.

“Samuel Voss may be your father.”

Lily stepped backward.

“No.”

The door opened.

Agent Hayes entered with a hospital security officer.

“Dr. Voss escaped federal transport.”

Adrian stared at him.

“How?”

“The vehicle was attacked.”

“Two agents were killed.”

Hayes looked at Lily.

“We found a message written inside the transport van.”

He showed them a photograph.

The words had been scratched into the metal wall.

BRING MY DAUGHTER HOME.

A second line appeared beneath it.

THE MAID WAS NEVER YOURS TO SAVE.
