Chapter 9 - THE MOTHER BEHIND THE CONSPIRACY -Evelyn Blackwood stepped from the helicopter with the rifle aimed at Adrian.

Her silver hair remained perfectly arranged despite the wind.
She looked exactly as Adrian remembered her from childhood.
Controlled.
Elegant.
Untouched by guilt.
Julian moved toward her.
Blood soaked his jacket.
“You took your time.”
“You allowed yourself to be shot.”
Her tone contained no concern.
She examined the wound as if assessing damage to an expensive object.
Adrian remained behind the ventilation unit.
“You ordered Claire’s death?”
Evelyn looked at him.
“I ordered a correction.”
“You were destroying everything generations of this family built.”
“By marrying the woman I loved?”
“By allowing emotion to govern the company.”
Claire had opposed several Blackwood investments involving experimental medical facilities.
She discovered financial irregularities connected to Northstar.
When she threatened to expose them, Evelyn decided she had become dangerous.
Julian had carried out the operation.
Vanessa had provided the medication.
Dr. Voss had falsified the medical records.
Thomas Hale had erased the security footage.
The conspiracy had begun with Evelyn.
Adrian’s voice shook with rage.
“You stole my daughter.”
“Grace is alive because of me.”
“You imprisoned her.”
“I protected a valuable heir.”
Evelyn had used children from wealthy families as leverage over business leaders.
Some parents transferred shares.
Some approved mergers.
Others resigned from government positions.
The children were released years later with altered memories and false medical histories.
Those who could not be returned safely disappeared.
Adrian thought of the frightened children below.
“You built an empire around abducting children.”
“I built stability.”
“You built a prison.”
Evelyn looked toward the helicopter pilot.
“Prepare to leave.”
Julian moved closer to the aircraft.
“What about Adrian?”
“He made his choice.”
Julian smiled.
He raised his weapon.
Before he could fire, the rooftop door burst open.
Ethan ran outside.
“Dad!”
Everyone turned.
Adrian’s heart nearly stopped.
Ethan had followed him from the corridor.
Evelyn pointed the rifle toward the boy.
Adrian stepped from cover.
“Don’t.”
Ethan froze.
Evelyn’s eyes moved across his face.
For the first time, her expression softened.
“My grandson.”
“You hurt my mom,” Ethan said.
“She confused weakness with morality.”
“You hurt Grace too.”
“Grace will understand one day.”
Ethan reached beneath his sweater.
Adrian feared he had taken a weapon.
Instead, the boy removed a small recording device.
Lily had hidden it in his pocket before they left the manor.
The red light blinked.
Evelyn realized everything she had said had been recorded.
Her face hardened.
“Give me that.”
Ethan stepped backward.
Julian lunged toward him.
Adrian tackled his brother.
The pistol discharged.
The bullet struck the helicopter’s fuel line.
Liquid sprayed across the rooftop.
Evelyn grabbed Ethan’s arm.
He screamed.
Lily appeared in the doorway.
She rushed toward them.
Evelyn swung the rifle.
Lily ducked and drove her shoulder into the older woman.
The recording device slid across the roof.
Ethan crawled after it.
Julian and Adrian fought near the helicopter.
Julian struck Adrian’s injured ribs.
Adrian slammed him against the landing rail.
“You were always Mother’s favorite,” Julian hissed.
“No.”
“She used you.”
Julian’s face twisted.
“She chose me.”
“She turned you into a criminal and called it love.”
The words landed harder than a fist.
Julian hesitated.
Adrian saw doubt for the first time.
Evelyn recovered and pointed the rifle at Lily.
“Step away.”
Lily stood between her and Ethan.
“No.”
“You are a maid.”
“And you are a monster.”
Evelyn’s finger tightened around the trigger.
A shot rang out.
Lily flinched.
But the bullet did not strike her.
Claire stood in the rooftop doorway with smoke curling from her pistol.
Evelyn dropped the rifle.
Blood spread through the sleeve of her coat.
Lily pulled Ethan away.
The helicopter pilot panicked and attempted to lift off.
The damaged fuel line sprayed across the engine housing.
Flames erupted.
The aircraft tilted.
Its rotor struck the rooftop rail.
Metal exploded outward.
Everyone fell.
The helicopter slid toward the edge.
Evelyn’s coat caught on the landing skid.
She was dragged across the roof.
Claire reached for her.
Adrian shouted.
“Let it go!”
Claire refused.
She grabbed Evelyn’s hand as the helicopter hung partially over the edge.
Evelyn stared up at the woman she had tried to destroy.
“Why would you save me?”
“So you can answer for what you did.”
Julian crawled toward them.
He could have helped.
Instead, he reached for the fallen recording device.
Ethan saw him.
“Uncle Julian, don’t.”
Julian looked at the boy.
Then he looked at Evelyn.
She had used him for years.
Yet he still chose the evidence over her life.
The helicopter shifted.
Claire lost her grip.
Lily and Adrian grabbed Claire’s waist.
Marcus arrived and helped pull Evelyn free seconds before the helicopter fell into the lake.
The burning aircraft disappeared beneath the dark water.
Evelyn lay on the rooftop breathing hard.
Police helicopters approached from the south.
This time, Marcus had confirmed their identification.
Federal agents accompanied them.
Evelyn was arrested.
Dr. Voss and Vanessa were placed in separate aircraft.
Julian remained missing.
During the confusion, he escaped through a maintenance hatch.
The rescued children were transported to hospitals under federal protection.
Grace refused to release Ethan’s hand.
Claire sat beside them.
Adrian remained near Lily.
“You saved him again.”
Lily looked at Ethan.
“He saved all of us.”
The recording contained Evelyn’s confession.
It should have ended the conspiracy.
But when Marcus attempted to copy the file, he discovered the device was empty.
The blinking red light had been a decoy.
Ethan looked confused.
“I thought it was recording.”
Lily opened the back.
Someone had removed the memory card before they reached the island.
Only a handful of people had been close enough to do it.
Adrian looked toward Marcus.
Marcus’s face became unreadable.
Then an agent entered carrying a sealed evidence bag.

Inside was the missing memory card.
It had been found in Lily’s coat pocket.
