Chapter 18 - JULIAN’S FINAL LESSON -The photograph had been taken that morning.

Grace’s school was immediately locked down.

Federal agents searched every room.

Julian was gone.

Grace had not been taken.

She was found beneath a library table with her hands over her ears.

Claire held her while Ethan stood guard beside them.

Adrian examined the message.

Julian’s reference to Evelyn suggested he still maintained contact with her.

Evelyn was being held in a federal detention hospital.

All calls and visitors were monitored.

Hayes reviewed the records.

One visitor appeared unusual.

A priest named Father Matthew visited Evelyn twice.

The diocese had no priest by that name.

Security footage showed the visitor keeping his face lowered.

Facial recognition identified him as a former Blackwood employee named Owen Price.

Price had managed one of the secret clinics.

He disappeared after the island rescue.

Agents raided his apartment.

They found maps of Grace’s school, the manor, and Safe Harbor’s headquarters.

One location was circled.

A church outside Greenwich.

Claire recognized it.

She and Adrian had married there.

Ethan had been baptized there.

The Blackwood family owned the surrounding land.

Lily studied the old architectural plans.

A private burial crypt lay beneath the church.

Evelyn’s husband, Charles, was entombed there.

So was the empty coffin bearing Claire’s name.

Julian might be preparing something symbolic.

The family traveled under heavy protection.

Hayes objected to bringing the children.

But Ethan overheard the discussion and refused to be separated from Grace.

Grace became distressed whenever Claire left her sight.

Ultimately, the children remained inside an armored vehicle near the church with federal agents.

Adrian, Claire, Lily, and Hayes entered the building.

Candles burned along the aisle.

The church appeared empty.

A recording of Evelyn’s voice played through hidden speakers.

“Family is not love.”

“Family is obedience.”

Adrian looked toward the altar.

A black coffin stood where he and Claire had exchanged vows.

The lid opened.

Julian rose from inside.

He held no visible weapon.

“Dramatic,” Adrian said.

Julian smiled.

“I learned from Mother.”

“Where is she?”

“Exactly where she deserves to be.”

“You sent the photograph.”

“I needed you here.”

“Why?”

Julian looked at Lily.

“To transfer what remains of the company.”

“Again?”

Adrian almost laughed.

“You have lost every legal claim.”

“Not every claim.”

Julian produced Charles Blackwood’s original will.

The version held by the court was a copy.

The original contained a hidden clause.

If Evelyn, Adrian, and Julian were convicted of crimes against the family trust, controlling ownership transferred to Charles’s legally adopted child.

Lily.

Julian needed her signature to gain access to the family’s frozen international accounts.

“Why would I sign anything?”

“Because I know where the remaining Northstar children are.”

Hayes raised his weapon.

“Tell us.”

Julian shook his head.

“Only after the transfer.”

Lily studied him.

“You don’t care about the company anymore.”

His smile disappeared.

She continued.

“You know the accounts will be seized.”

“You know the board will never accept you.”

“This is not about money.”

Julian looked toward Charles’s tomb.

“All my life, he looked at Adrian as if he were the future.”

“Then he secretly adopted you.”

“A stranger.”

“The daughter of a criminal.”

“He gave everyone a place except me.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“You had a place.”

“No.”

“I had a function.”

“Mother used me.”

“Father despised me.”

“You pitied me.”

Lily understood.

Julian wanted proof that someone could still choose him.

The signatures were an excuse.

“What do you actually want?” she asked.

“I want the truth acknowledged.”

“What truth?”

“That I was made into this.”

Lily nodded slowly.

“You were manipulated.”

Julian’s face softened slightly.

“You were neglected.”

“Yes.”

“You were taught that power was the only form of safety.”

“Yes.”

“But you still chose to hurt children.”

His expression hardened again.

“You think choice is simple.”

“No.”

“I think responsibility is necessary.”

A bell rang beneath the floor.

Hayes checked his radio.

The armored vehicle outside was no longer responding.

Adrian ran toward the doors.

They were locked.

Julian lifted a small remote.

“I told you Mother taught me one final lesson.”

“Always make them look in the wrong direction.”

A live camera feed appeared on the church wall.

The armored vehicle was moving away from the grounds.

Ethan and Grace were inside.

Owen Price drove.

Claire rushed toward Julian.

“Stop the vehicle.”

“Sign the documents.”

Lily picked up the pen.

Adrian grabbed her wrist.

“He won’t release them.”

“I know.”

She looked at Julian.

“But he wants us to believe he still has control.”

She examined the video feed.

Ethan sat near the rear window.

He held up one hand.

His fingers formed letters.

Lily had taught him a few signs while Grace struggled with speech.

He signed:

NOT REAL.

The video was prerecorded.

The time on the dashboard clock showed 8:14.

It was now 9:02.

Hayes shot the remote from Julian’s hand.

Agents entered through the side sacristy.

The armored vehicle remained outside.

Price had attempted to take it but was arrested before reaching the gate.

Julian’s plan had failed.

He looked at Lily.

“You knew.”

“Ethan knew.”

Federal agents surrounded him.

Julian reached beneath his coat.

Adrian moved in front of Lily.

But Julian removed no weapon.

He held a photograph of himself as a child.

Evelyn stood behind him with one hand on his shoulder.

Charles and Adrian stood several feet away.

Julian looked isolated even within the family portrait.

“I could have been different.”

Lily answered gently.

“Yes.”

The word destroyed him more completely than blame.

He surrendered.

Before agents took him away, he provided the location of the final Northstar records.

He did not ask for a deal.

Perhaps it was his first decision not shaped by Evelyn.

The remaining children were found in facilities across Canada and Europe.

Some returned to families.

Others learned their families had participated in the conspiracy.

Safe Harbor created long-term homes for them.

The criminal trial concluded after seven months.

Richard Cole received multiple life sentences.

Samuel Voss received life without parole.

Julian received a reduced sentence because of his cooperation, though he remained imprisoned for decades.

Vanessa received twenty-two years.

Thomas Hale received twelve years.

Marcus Reed received eight.

Evelyn awaited the final verdict.

On the final day, she asked to speak.

The courtroom became silent.

She looked at Adrian.

“You destroyed your inheritance for servants, damaged children, and a wife who betrayed you.”

Adrian stood.

“No.”

“I finally decided what I wanted to inherit.”

“What?”

“Nothing from you.”

The jury found Evelyn guilty on every major charge.

She received life imprisonment without parole.

As marshals led her away, she looked toward Ethan.

She expected fear.

He held Grace’s hand and looked back without lowering his eyes.

May you like

Evelyn had lost the final thing she controlled.

Their silence.
