Chapter 8 - THE ISLAND OF STOLEN CHILDREN -Claire lowered her weapon slightly.

Grace stared at her with frightened gray eyes.
Julian kept the gun beneath the child’s chin.
Vanessa stood beside him holding a small remote.
Dr. Voss remained behind a reinforced glass door.
Lily counted six armed guards along the hall.
The rescued children huddled beneath the nurses’ station.
Some were crying silently.
Others watched with the numb expressions of children who had learned that fear attracted punishment.
Claire’s voice was steady.
“Let her go.”
Julian smiled.
“You abandoned her.”
“You have no right to pretend you are her mother now.”
“I never abandoned her.”
“That is not what she believes.”
He looked down at Grace.
“Tell her who protected you.”
Grace whispered.
“Uncle Julian.”
Claire’s face tightened.
Julian had spent years controlling the girl’s understanding of love.
He had frightened her, then presented himself as the person who kept worse things away.
It was the same pattern Vanessa had used with Ethan.
Lily recognized it immediately.
She lowered herself slowly to Grace’s eye level.
“Grace, my name is Lily.”
Julian turned the gun toward her.
“Stand up.”
Lily ignored him.
“I know someone who has wanted to meet you his whole life, even though he only learned about you today.”
Grace blinked.
“Who?”
“Your brother.”
Julian’s expression sharpened.
“He is lying to you,” Lily continued.
“Your brother came all this way because he heard you were afraid.”
Grace looked uncertain.
Vanessa lifted the remote.
“Enough.”
Claire studied it.
“What does that control?”
Vanessa smiled.
“The building’s lower doors.”
“And something far more useful.”
She pressed one button.
A loud mechanical hum vibrated beneath the floor.
Marcus looked toward the stairwell.
“Fuel pumps.”
The hospital’s generators ran on underground diesel tanks.
Vanessa had activated a timed ignition system.
“You’re going to burn the children?” Lily asked.
“They were always evidence,” Vanessa said.
“Evidence has a limited life.”
Even Julian looked surprised.
“That was not authorized.”
Vanessa laughed.
“You lost the right to authorize anything when you left me to be arrested.”
She pointed the remote toward Julian.
“You planned to kill me after the wedding.”
“I heard you speaking to Voss.”
Julian’s jaw tightened.
Vanessa’s alliance with him was over.
Now she wanted leverage of her own.
She stepped backward toward a side door.
“I am leaving with Grace.”
“You will give me ten million dollars and a new identity.”
“Or I press the second button.”
Julian aimed at her.
“Hand me the remote.”
Vanessa moved it closer to the switch.
“If I release my thumb, the tanks ignite.”
The hallway fell silent.
Claire looked toward Marcus.
He understood.
They needed to separate Vanessa from the remote without causing her to release it.
Grace began trembling.
Julian’s grip loosened slightly as he watched Vanessa.
Lily moved one foot forward.
A security guard noticed.
He raised his weapon.
Before he could speak, a fire alarm sounded from the lower floor.
Adrian’s voice came through the building speakers.
“Julian.”
Julian turned toward the ceiling.
Adrian and Ethan had crossed from the marina after the video feed was cut.
They entered through the old ventilation tunnels shown on the island’s blueprints.
Adrian continued.
“You wanted my attention.”
“Now you have it.”
The distraction lasted only two seconds.
It was enough.
Grace bit Julian’s hand.
He cried out.
Claire rushed forward.
Lily tackled Vanessa.
The remote flew from her fingers.
Marcus caught it before it struck the floor.
Gunfire erupted.
Adrian appeared at the opposite end of the corridor.
He fired at the ceiling sprinkler pipes.
Water exploded through the hallway.
The guards lost visibility.
Claire pulled Grace behind a wall.
Lily pinned Vanessa to the floor.
Vanessa clawed at her face.
“You ruined my life!”
“You ruined it yourself.”
Vanessa reached for a broken piece of glass.
Lily caught her wrist.
The two women struggled.
Ethan emerged from behind Adrian.
He saw Grace and ran toward her.
“Grace!”
She stared at him.
He stopped several feet away.
“I’m Ethan.”
He lifted both hands to show he carried no weapon.
“I brought you this.”
He removed the silver whistle from his neck and held it out.
Grace looked at Claire.
Then she stepped forward and took it.
The siblings stood facing each other while chaos unfolded around them.
Dr. Voss attempted to escape through the laboratory.
Marcus followed him.
Julian ran toward the roof stairs.
Adrian pursued.
Claire remained with the children.
Lily finally forced Vanessa’s arm behind her back.
Police sirens sounded across the lake.
Marcus had transmitted their location before the attack.
Vanessa began laughing.
“You think the police are coming to save you?”
“The first officers belong to Julian.”
Claire looked toward the windows.
Three boats approached the island.
The officers aboard wore state police uniforms.
Marcus returned from the laboratory dragging Dr. Voss in handcuffs.
“Those aren’t state police boats.”
“They’re private security using stolen uniforms.”
Adrian’s trusted team barricaded the upper floor.
The children were moved into the central treatment room.
Marcus searched for another exit.
The island’s only underground tunnel had collapsed years earlier.
The roof held an emergency helicopter pad.
But Julian had reached it first.
Adrian followed him through the final door.
Wind tore across the rooftop.
A helicopter descended from the clouds.
Julian fired twice.
Adrian ducked behind a ventilation unit.
The helicopter door opened.
A woman in a black coat leaned out.
Adrian recognized her as Evelyn Blackwood, his mother.
She had spent the previous decade living quietly in Switzerland.
Adrian had believed she was unaware of Julian’s crimes.
Evelyn pointed a rifle toward him.
“Step away from your brother.”
Adrian stared at her.
“Mother?”
Julian smiled through the pain of his wounded shoulder.
“You still don’t understand.”
May you like
“I did not create this operation.”
“She did.”
