Chapter 14 - THE SHEPHERD CLOSES THE DOORS -The board members rose in alarm.

Richard Cole remained seated.
A small pistol appeared in his hand.
Two directors moved toward the door.
Armed security officers entered from concealed panels and forced them back.
Adrian recognized the uniforms.
They belonged to Blackwood Industries.
Richard had controlled corporate security for years.
He had selected the guards personally.
“You were Evelyn’s partner,” Adrian said.
Richard smiled.
“Evelyn believed I was her employee.”
“She was useful.”
“Nothing more.”
He had managed the financial side of the child-abduction network.
Evelyn handled family influence.
Voss controlled the medical facilities.
Julian carried out intimidation.
Richard moved the money and ensured no investigation reached the truth.
The arrests had not destroyed the operation.
They had removed Richard’s competitors.
Claire stepped in front of Ethan and Grace.
“What do you want?”
“The company.”
Richard looked toward Adrian.
“Sign the succession resolution.”
“You will name me executive chairman.”
“Then you and your unusual household may disappear.”
“No.”
Richard sighed.
“I expected pride.”
He signaled one guard.
The man grabbed Lily and pressed a weapon against her back.
Ethan screamed.
Adrian’s hands tightened.
Richard watched his reaction.
“Evelyn was correct about one thing.”
“You have become emotionally dependent on the maid.”
Lily looked at Adrian.
“Do not sign.”
The guard twisted her arm.
She winced.
Adrian moved forward.
Richard raised his pistol toward Ethan.
“Stay where you are.”
Claire scanned the room.
The steel shutters blocked all signals.
The cameras belonged to Richard.
The board members were hostages.
No outside help would arrive unless someone escaped the room.
Grace clutched Claire’s hand.
She noticed a small ventilation opening beneath the conference table.
Years of living inside medical facilities had taught her to watch doors, vents, and locks.
She pulled Ethan close.
Then she whispered something to him.
Ethan nodded.
The children crawled beneath the table while the adults argued.
Richard did not notice.
Adrian stalled.
“Even if I sign, federal agents will trace every transaction.”
“They will find what I allow them to find.”
“You cannot control Evelyn.”
“She is finished.”
“Julian will testify.”
“He will never reach a courtroom.”
Adrian studied Richard’s face.
“You arranged the attack on the prison transport.”
Richard smiled.
Julian and Voss were scheduled to be moved that afternoon.
Richard planned to silence them both.
Claire spoke loudly.
“You underestimate them.”
“I have underestimated enough Blackwoods for one lifetime.”
Beneath the table, Grace removed Ethan’s silver whistle from her pocket.
She inserted the thin chain into the ventilation screws.
The chain was too weak.
Ethan used the metal edge of his shoe buckle.
Together, they loosened the grille.
Grace crawled into the vent.
Ethan followed.
The passage was narrow and dark.
It led toward the executive kitchen.
Inside the boardroom, Richard ordered Adrian to sign.
Lily’s guard pressed the weapon harder against her ribs.
Adrian picked up the pen.
Claire watched him.
He could see the warning in her eyes.
Richard placed the papers before him.
Adrian signed the first page.
Then the fire alarm activated.
The steel shutters rose automatically.
Emergency systems unlocked the doors.
Richard stood.
“What happened?”
Sprinklers exploded overhead.
Ethan and Grace had reached the kitchen and pulled the manual alarm.
Board members rushed toward the exit.
Richard’s guards attempted to stop them.
Lily drove her heel into her captor’s foot.
She twisted free.
Claire grabbed Grace as the child emerged from the service corridor.
Adrian struck Richard across the jaw.
The pistol slid beneath the table.
Richard fought with surprising strength.
He slammed Adrian against the glass wall.
“You were supposed to be weak.”
Adrian pushed him backward.
“You confused love with weakness.”
Lily pulled Ethan behind a chair.
One guard aimed toward them.
A board member named Helen Ortiz threw a laptop at his arm.
The shot struck the ceiling.
Other directors joined the struggle.
Richard’s security team lost control.
Federal agents entered from the elevators.
Marcus Reed had warned Hayes about a hidden emergency passage beneath the executive floor.
Agents used it to bypass Richard’s guards.
Richard ran toward the rooftop stairwell.
Adrian followed.
They emerged onto the top of Blackwood Tower.
A helicopter waited near the eastern pad.
The pilot saw Richard approaching and started the engine.
Richard turned and fired.
The bullet struck Adrian’s side.
He fell.
Richard reached the helicopter.
Before he could board, Claire appeared from the stairwell.
She held Richard’s dropped boardroom pistol.
“Stop.”
Richard looked at her.
“You were always the greatest inconvenience.”
Claire’s hand remained steady.
“You stole my children.”
“I managed assets.”
“They are not assets.”
“To families like ours, everyone is an asset.”
Richard raised his weapon toward Adrian.
Claire fired.
The bullet struck Richard’s hand.
His pistol fell over the edge.
Federal agents surrounded him.
He was arrested.
Adrian was rushed to surgery.
The bullet had missed his vital organs, but internal bleeding was severe.
Lily waited outside the operating room with Ethan and Grace.
Claire sat across from her.
Neither woman spoke for a long time.
Finally, Ethan looked at Lily.
“Is Dad going to die?”
“No.”
“You don’t know.”
Lily swallowed.
“No.”
“I don’t.”
Ethan pressed his face into her shoulder.
Claire watched them.
The bond between Lily and her son was undeniable.
It also awakened a fear she hated herself for feeling.
During the surgery, Hayes received news from the federal transport team.
Julian’s convoy had been attacked exactly as Richard predicted.
The attackers failed to free him.
But Samuel Voss escaped again.
A guard had been found wearing Voss’s prison uniform.
Voss had left a message inside the transport van.
This time, it was addressed to Claire.
YOU STOLE MY DAUGHTER.
I WILL TAKE YOUR SON.
Lily looked toward Ethan.
May you like
His chair was empty.
The emergency exit beside the waiting room stood open.
