Chapter 17 - THE LAST SERVANT OF THE OLD EMPIRE -Darkness swallowed the courtroom.

People screamed.

Federal marshals ordered everyone to the floor.

Lily reached for Ethan, but he was not there.

The children had remained at the manor with Claire.

Adrian pulled Lily behind the prosecution table.

Emergency lights flickered red.

Thomas Hale’s voice continued through the speakers.

“This trial is built on lies.”

“The Blackwoods will sacrifice anyone to preserve themselves.”

Adrian looked toward Hayes.

“Where is he?”

Hayes listened to his radio.

Hale’s men had attacked the building’s electrical room.

Several exits were blocked.

The prisoners were being moved to secure holding cells.

Then the courtroom door opened.

Hale entered wearing a courthouse maintenance uniform.

Explosives were strapped beneath his jacket.

He held a trigger in one hand.

Marshals aimed at him.

“Lower your weapons,” Hale said.

“If my heart stops, the device detonates.”

A monitor was attached to his chest.

The trigger system appeared connected to his pulse.

Hale had once managed Blackwood Manor with quiet efficiency.

Now his face was hollow and desperate.

He looked at Adrian.

“You left me to Julian.”

“You accepted money to help him.”

“I accepted money because your father destroyed my family.”

Adrian frowned.

Hale’s father had worked at one of Charles Blackwood’s factories.

A chemical leak caused permanent injuries to dozens of workers.

The company buried the report.

Hale entered the Blackwood household years later to gather evidence.

Evelyn discovered his purpose and recruited him.

She promised compensation for the victims.

Instead, she trapped him through blackmail.

Hale spent twelve years obeying orders.

“I wanted to expose all of you.”

“Then why hurt Ethan?” Lily asked.

Hale looked at her.

“I never touched the boy.”

“You helped Vanessa hide what she did.”

“I was afraid.”

“So was Ethan.”

The words struck him.

Hale’s hand tightened around the trigger.

“I cannot undo it.”

“No,” Lily said.

“But you can stop adding to it.”

He laughed bitterly.

“The files Richard kept will disappear if this trial continues.”

“Where are they?”

“In a private archive beneath Blackwood Manor.”

Adrian looked at him.

“There is no archive beneath the house.”

“Your mother built it before you were born.”

“The entrance is beneath Claire’s bedroom.”

The loose floorboard had hidden more than an envelope.

It covered a mechanical lock.

Richard’s financial records, photographs, and blackmail files were stored below the manor.

Hale wanted federal immunity and protection for the factory victims.

Hayes agreed to negotiate.

Before they could continue, Voss appeared in the upper gallery.

He had escaped the holding corridor during the blackout.

He held a marshal’s weapon.

His eyes went directly to Lily.

Hale turned.

“You were supposed to remain locked up.”

Voss fired.

The bullet struck Hale’s chest monitor.

The trigger system activated.

A thirty-second countdown appeared on the bomb.

Voss ran toward the rear exit.

Adrian pursued him.

Hayes and the bomb squad reached Hale.

The wounded man remained conscious.

“The code,” Hayes said.

“There must be a shutdown code.”

Hale looked toward Lily.

“Ethan’s first word.”

Lily knew Ethan’s first word had been “light.”

Claire had once told her.

She entered the letters into the keypad.

The timer stopped at four seconds.

Hale began crying.

“Tell the workers I’m sorry.”

He survived surgery and later agreed to testify.

Voss fled into the courthouse archives.

Adrian followed the trail of blood from his injured hand.

He found Voss near an open window.

Police surrounded the building below.

There was nowhere to escape.

Voss held the pistol beneath his chin.

“Stay back.”

Adrian stopped.

“You don’t want to die.”

“You know nothing about what I want.”

“You want Lily to forgive you.”

Voss’s expression cracked.

“She is my daughter.”

“No.”

“She is the person you harmed most.”

“She belongs to me.”

“No child belongs to the person who created them.”

Adrian moved closer.

“Love is not ownership.”

Voss looked toward the window.

Lily entered the archive room.

She had followed Adrian despite Hayes’s order.

Voss saw her.

“Laura.”

“My name is Lily.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“I can still tell you about your mother.”

“I have her letters.”

“She was afraid of you.”

“She loved me.”

“Maybe once.”

Lily’s voice remained gentle.

“But you turned that love into an excuse for cruelty.”

Voss lowered the weapon slightly.

“You could visit me.”

“No.”

The answer was quiet and final.

His face collapsed.

For years, he had imagined a reunion in which Lily understood him.

He never considered that understanding could lead to rejection.

Federal agents entered behind her.

Voss surrendered.

This time, he was placed in a maximum-security facility under constant observation.

The courthouse trial resumed weeks later.

Hale led investigators to the archive beneath Blackwood Manor.

The entrance was exactly where he described.

Behind the loose floorboard, agents found a steel mechanism.

A staircase opened beneath Claire’s bedroom.

The underground archive contained files on hundreds of families.

The evidence reached corporations, judges, police departments, and political offices across several states.

Safe Harbor expanded overnight.

Lily and her team began identifying victims.

One file contained the name of a child who had been missing for nineteen years.

Another contained adoption records altered by Richard.

A third folder bore Lily’s name.

Inside was a document signed by Charles Blackwood.

It declared that Lily was not merely a shareholder.

She had been legally adopted by Charles before his death.

Adrian stared at the document.

Under the terms of the Blackwood family charter, an adopted child of the chairman held equal inheritance rights.

Lily was legally Adrian’s sister.

The tabloids that had called her his secret lover changed their headlines overnight.

But one question remained.

Why had Charles Blackwood adopted the daughter of Samuel Voss without ever telling either of them?

The answer appeared in a final sealed letter.

Charles wrote that Lily’s mother had saved Adrian’s life when he was a child.

Evelyn had ordered a fire at a company residence to destroy financial evidence.

Young Adrian was inside.

Anna Voss ran into the burning building and carried him out.

She suffered severe injuries.

Charles adopted Lily in gratitude and guilt.

Adrian looked at Lily.

“Our family owed you long before you entered our house.”

Lily folded the letter.

“Then let’s make sure the debt ends with us.”

Outside the archive, Ethan screamed.

Everyone rushed upstairs.

They found him in the marble foyer staring at the open front door.

A black envelope lay on the floor.

Inside was a photograph of Julian Blackwood standing beside Grace’s school.

He had escaped federal custody during the courthouse attack.
