Chapter 11 - Plan B.

Claire read the words until they blurred.
IF CLAIRE WAKES EARLY, MOVE TO PLAN B.
Her fingers tightened around the tablet.
"What was Plan B?"
Detective Keene looked grim.
"We do not know yet."
"Then find out."
Her voice came out sharper than she intended.
Keene did not take offense.
"We are trying."
Adrian stood frozen beside the bed.
"What does medically incapacitated mean?"
Dr. Harris answered from the doorway.
"In a hospital context, it could mean many things."
Claire looked at him.
"Could someone have expected me not to wake up?"
The doctor hesitated.
That hesitation frightened her more than any answer.
"Your hemorrhage was severe."
"I know."
"You required an emergency transfusion and surgery."
"I know."
"There was a period when your blood pressure was dangerously low."
Claire stared at him.
"Was that normal for what happened?"
Dr. Harris looked toward Dana.
Dana closed the door.
"We reviewed your medication administration record after we found the forged consent forms."
Claire felt a chill.
"And?"
Dr. Harris walked closer.
"A sedative dose was entered at 2:06 a.m. that I did not order."
Margaret gripped the back of a chair.
"She was already unconscious."
"She was heavily medicated, but that additional dose was unnecessary."
Adrian's face drained of color.
"Could it have killed her?"
"At the documented amount, probably not."
Claire heard the word probably.
"Could it have delayed me waking up?"
"Yes."
The room went silent.
Claire remembered the darkness after delivery.
She remembered hearing voices without being able to move.
She remembered Vanessa saying it was time to tell everyone the truth.
Claire's hands began to shake.
"Who entered the medication order?"
Dana looked at the audit report.
"A resident physician's credentials were used."
"Did the resident order it?"
"No."
"Then who had access to the credentials?"
Dana's expression tightened.
"We found a login from the same workstation used to print the wrong baby bracelet."
Claire closed her eyes.
Everything had been coordinated.
The forged disclosure.
The sedative.
The bracelet.
The deleted camera footage.
Someone needed Claire unable to speak while Vanessa stood beside Adrian and established a new version of reality.
Adrian sat down heavily.
"She wanted Claire conscious enough to survive, but unconscious long enough to lose control of the story."
Keene nodded.
"That is one working theory."
Claire looked at him.
"And Plan B?"
"Vanessa's folder contains a second hospital floor map."
He opened an image.
A red circle marked the neonatal imaging corridor.
Another red line led to the service elevators.
Claire held Lucy closer.
"Taking her."
Keene nodded.
"Possibly."
Margaret's face hardened.
"Why Lucy?"
Keene opened another file.
It was a screenshot of a private message from Vanessa to an unknown contact.
THE GIRL IS THE LEVER.
Claire stared at the sentence.
"What does that mean?"
Adrian looked toward the babies.
"If they could make Lucy's parentage look questionable, they could challenge the entire transfer."
Claire shook her head.
"That explains the company."
She looked at Keene.
"It does not explain why Vanessa wanted her physically removed."
Keene hesitated.
"We found something else in the cloud folder."
He opened a photograph.
It showed Vanessa holding a newborn seven years earlier.
She looked younger.
Exhausted.
Heartbroken.
A hospital bracelet circled her wrist.
Adrian stood abruptly.
Margaret whispered, "Oh, God."
Claire looked between them.
"What?"
Margaret covered her mouth.
Adrian stared at the photograph.
"She told me the baby died."
Claire felt the room tilt.
"Your baby?"
Adrian did not answer immediately.
That was answer enough.
"Adrian."
His voice broke.
"I thought she miscarried."
Margaret shook her head.
"That is what Vanessa told us."
Claire stared at the photograph.
The newborn was wrapped in a pale yellow blanket.
The baby's face was turned away.
"You got Vanessa pregnant?"
Adrian looked at Claire.
"Before I met you."
"That is not the part I am asking about."
"Yes."
Margaret sat down slowly.
"Vanessa was twenty-one."
Claire looked at her.
"And what happened?"
"She said she lost the pregnancy at twenty-four weeks."
"But this photograph shows a newborn."
Keene nodded.
"The image metadata says it was taken three months after the date Vanessa claimed the miscarriage occurred."
Claire looked at Adrian.
"Did you know?"
"No."
His face looked genuinely shattered.
"I swear to you, no."
Keene opened one final file.
It was a scanned birth certificate.
The mother's name was Vanessa Hart.
The father's name was blank.
The baby was listed as female.
The child's name was Lillian Hart.
Claire looked down at Lucy.
Lucy.
Lillian.
The similarity made her stomach turn.
"Where is that child now?"
Keene's voice was quiet.
"We do not know."
Adrian stared at the birth certificate.
"She would be seven."
Margaret whispered, "Why did Vanessa tell us she died?"
Nobody answered.
Claire looked at the message again.
THE GIRL IS THE LEVER.
For the first time, she wondered whether Vanessa's obsession with Lucy had begun long before Lucy was born.
