Chapter 4 - Three Cradles, Four Names.

Claire refused sedation that night.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Adrian's fingers intertwined with Vanessa's.

Every time she looked toward the bassinets, she imagined someone changing another bracelet while she slept.

The hospital assigned a security officer outside the room.

Mia personally checked each infant identification band every hour.

The original wrong bracelet had been sealed in an evidence envelope.

It still read BABY GIRL MONROE.

Claire asked to see it again.

Dana hesitated but eventually held the clear bag up where Claire could read the printing.

"There were no Monroes admitted to labor and delivery last night," Dana said.

"Then why would someone choose that name?"

No one had an answer.

Adrian had left after Claire told him she could not look at him without seeing the gold dress.

Margaret stayed.

She slept in a chair for twenty minutes at a time and woke whenever one of the babies made a sound.

Near midnight, the smallest triplet began crying.

Claire struggled to sit up.

Pain tore across her abdomen.

Margaret was instantly awake.

"Don't move."

"Bring her to me."

Mia entered and carefully lifted the baby.

"This is Baby C."

Claire held her daughter for the first time while fully conscious.

The baby's face was red and scrunched with outrage.

Claire laughed and cried at once.

"Hi, little fighter."

Margaret wiped her eyes.

"She has your chin."

Claire touched one tiny cheek.

"Does she have a name?"

Margaret looked surprised.

"You and Adrian hadn't decided."

Claire remembered the list on her phone.

Adrian had liked traditional names.

Claire had liked names that sounded bright.

They had agreed to choose after seeing the babies.

That now felt like a conversation from another life.

"Lucy."

Margaret smiled through tears.

"Lucy Cole."

Claire hesitated.

"Lucy Bennett Cole."

The addition of her own last name felt important.

Mia looked at her with quiet understanding.

The second baby woke next.

A boy with dark hair plastered against his tiny head.

Claire named him Noah.

The third slept through everything.

A girl with one fist tucked beneath her cheek.

Claire named her Grace.

Lucy, Noah, and Grace.

For a few minutes, the room became what it should have been all along.

Then Mia's scanner beeped.

She was updating the names in the electronic chart.

Her expression tightened.

"Mrs. Cole, did you ever approve donor gametes?"

Claire looked up.

"No."

Margaret stood.

"Why are you asking?"

Mia turned the screen slightly.

A field in Claire's fertility history showed four embryo identification codes.

Claire stared at it.

"We had three embryos transferred."

"That's what your obstetric record says."

"Then why are there four codes?"

Mia tapped the fourth line.

It had been added seven months earlier.

The code ended in MON-214.

Claire felt the room narrow around her.

"Monroe."

Mia nodded.

Margaret took out her phone.

"I'm calling Adrian."

Claire stopped her.

"No."

"He needs to know."

"He chose who he believed."

Margaret lowered the phone slowly.

Claire looked at Mia.

"Can you tell whose embryo that code belongs to?"

"Not from the hospital system."

"Who can?"

"Bellweather."

Claire almost smiled at the absurdity.

Every road led back to the clinic.

The next morning, Dana arranged an independent genetic sampling protocol.

No Bellweather staff were allowed near the room.

No outside lab would receive the samples.

The hospital's legal department selected a university laboratory forty miles away.

A chain-of-custody officer photographed every sealed tube.

Claire watched all of it.

Adrian arrived as the samples were being collected.

He stopped at the doorway when he saw Claire holding Lucy.

For a moment, his face softened.

Then he noticed the chain-of-custody forms.

"What is happening?"

Claire looked at him over Lucy's head.

"A real paternity test."

He stepped inside.

"Good."

"And maternity testing."

His face changed.

"Why would you need that?"

Mia handed him a copy of the embryo code page.

He read it.

"What is MON-214?"

Claire watched him carefully.

"I was hoping you could tell me."

He looked genuinely confused.

That was the first thing about him Claire believed without question all day.

Adrian took out his phone.

"I'm calling Bellweather."

"Don't."

Claire's voice stopped him.

"Why?"

"Because someone there already knows we found the fourth code."

He frowned.

"How?"

Claire looked toward the flowers from the clinic.

The basket was gone.

She had asked security to remove it.

"Because whoever did this has been watching us closely enough to know when I was unconscious."

Adrian's expression darkened.

"You think Vanessa is involved in the embryo records."

"I think your girlfriend knew exactly which lie would make you abandon me before I could defend myself."

His face tightened at the word girlfriend.

"She is not my girlfriend."

Claire stared at him.

"You held her hand beside my hospital bed."

"She was pressuring me."

"And your fingers accidentally interlocked?"

He had no answer.

Claire looked down at Lucy.

"We will discuss your excuses after I know whether these are my children."

Adrian went pale.

Claire had not meant the sentence as punishment.

It was simply the fear she could no longer keep inside.

Then Dana's phone rang.

She answered, listened, and looked toward Claire.

"What?"

Dana ended the call.

"Bellweather's director says they cannot locate the original transfer-day embryo log."

Adrian swore under his breath.

Claire held Lucy closer.

Dana continued.

"And there is something else."

Claire waited.

"The name Daniel Monroe is in Bellweather's archived patient database."

Claire felt her pulse slam against her ribs.

"Who is he?"

Dana's voice lowered.

"He was not a patient."

"Then what was he?"

"He was an embryologist."

Margaret whispered, "Was?"

Dana nodded.

"Daniel Monroe died eight months ago."
