Chapter 2 - The Gold Dress at My Bedside.

Claire woke fully forty-three minutes later.

The oxygen mask had been replaced with a lighter nasal cannula.

Her head throbbed with every beat of her heart.

Adrian sat in a chair near the window.

Margaret stood beside the bassinets with both hands resting protectively on the clear plastic edge of the nearest one.

Vanessa was gone.

That should have made Claire feel safer.

It did not.

The cream envelope remained on the counter.

"Where is she?"

Claire's voice sounded rough and unfamiliar.

Adrian looked at her.

"Claire."

"Where is she?"

He leaned forward.

"You need to rest."

"If you say that again, I will find the strength to throw something at you."

Margaret closed her eyes briefly.

Adrian looked down at his hands.

Claire saw that he had removed his wedding ring.

A pale line circled his finger where the band had been.

Her chest went cold.

"How long?"

He looked up.

"What?"

"How long have you been sleeping with her?"

Margaret turned away.

Adrian's silence lasted too long.

"Four months."

Claire stared at him.

The monitor beside her accelerated.

A nurse outside the room looked through the glass but did not enter.

Claire swallowed against the pain in her throat.

"While I was carrying your children."

Adrian flinched.

"I was wrong."

"That is not an answer."

"Yes."

Claire turned her face toward the bassinets.

The triplets slept as if the room contained no betrayal at all.

Margaret moved closer to the bed.

"Claire, sweetheart, there is something else."

Claire laughed once.

It came out broken.

"Of course there is."

Margaret looked at Adrian with naked disgust.

"He authorized a private paternity test using samples from the amniocentesis you had at twenty-one weeks."

Claire looked sharply at him.

"You told me that sample was being stored for genetic screening."

"It was."

"You used it for something else."

"I asked the clinic to run an additional test."

"Without telling me."

He rubbed both hands over his face.

"Vanessa said there were inconsistencies in the fertility records."

Claire felt the first real jolt of fear.

"Vanessa knew about our fertility records?"

Adrian's eyes shifted.

That was when Claire understood there was a part of the story he still did not want to say.

"Who is she?"

Margaret answered before Adrian could.

"She worked for Bellweather Reproductive Center."

Claire stared at her.

Bellweather was the clinic where she and Adrian had spent two exhausting years trying to become parents.

It was where Claire had undergone blood draws, hormone injections, scans, procedures, and one devastating failed transfer.

It was where three embryos had finally survived.

"What did she do there?"

Adrian spoke quietly.

"Patient relations."

"Patient relations?"

Claire's voice rose.

"She had access to my file."

"Not directly."

"Do not defend her to me."

He went silent.

Claire pointed weakly toward the envelope.

"Give me the report."

"Claire, you just had surgery."

"Give me the report."

Margaret took the envelope before he could move.

She brought it to the bed.

Claire's hand shook as she pulled out the pages.

She read the first paragraph once.

Then twice.

Then a third time.

The report claimed that the tested fetal sample excluded Adrian as the biological father.

Claire stopped breathing for a second.

"This is impossible."

Adrian's eyes filled with something that looked almost like pain.

"That is what I thought."

"Almost?"

He did not answer.

Claire looked at the laboratory name.

Northstar Genetics.

She had never heard of it.

"Who collected your sample?"

"Vanessa arranged it."

Claire looked up so quickly that pain shot through her abdomen.

"She arranged your sample?"

Adrian stiffened.

"She knew the lab."

Claire lowered the report.

"So your mistress found a lab, arranged your collection, accessed information from my fertility clinic, and then handed you a report saying the babies were not yours."

He looked away.

"When you say it like that—"

"There is no other way to say it."

Margaret stepped closer.

"I told him the same thing."

A knock sounded at the door.

Mia entered with Dr. Harris and a woman wearing a navy hospital administration badge.

"Mrs. Cole, I'm Dana Lowell, patient safety director."

Claire immediately looked toward the bassinets.

"My babies."

Dana pulled a chair closer.

"All three are medically stable."

Claire's shoulders loosened by half an inch.

"Then why was one bracelet wrong?"

Dana chose her words carefully.

"We believe an identification band was switched after delivery."

Adrian stood.

"By whom?"

"We don't know yet."

"Was a baby switched?"

"At this moment, we have no evidence that any infant left this room or the secured nursery."

Claire gripped the blanket.

"At this moment?"

Dana nodded.

"We are reviewing badge access, camera footage, barcode scans, and staff assignments."

Mia stood near the door, unusually pale.

Claire noticed.

"What aren't you saying?"

Mia looked at Dana.

Dana hesitated.

Claire's voice sharpened.

"I almost died last night, so please stop trying to protect me from sentences."

Mia spoke.

"The incorrect bracelet was printed from an active labor-and-delivery workstation at 2:14 this morning."

"Who was logged in?"

Mia swallowed.

"You were."

Claire stared at her.

Adrian stood motionless.

"I was unconscious at 2:14."

Dana nodded.

"We know."

Claire looked from one face to another.

Then she remembered something.

Just before surgery, a clipboard had been placed in front of her.

A woman had asked her to sign an emergency consent form.

Claire had been shaking too badly to read it.

The woman had smelled like expensive vanilla perfume.

Claire looked toward the empty corner where Vanessa had been standing earlier.

"Check the consent forms."

Dana frowned.

"Why?"

Claire's pulse began to race.

"Because I think Vanessa Hart was in this hospital before Adrian says she arrived."
