Chapter 14 - The Price of a Daughter.

The answer came from a storage unit in Connecticut.

Hannah Price remembered that Daniel Monroe kept paper files after he stopped trusting Bellweather's servers.

Detectives found the rental agreement among his old tax records.

Inside the unit were four sealed archive boxes.

One was labeled HART.

Keene brought copies of the contents to the hospital the following afternoon.

The first document was a prenatal genetic report for Vanessa from seven years earlier.

The listed father was Adrian Cole.

The second was a notarized agreement between Vanessa and Victor.

Adrian read it standing up.

His hands began to shake.

"What does it say?"

Claire asked.

He could not answer.

Lena took the pages from him.

Her face changed as she read.

"Vanessa agreed not to identify Adrian as the father of her child."

Margaret gasped.

"For money?"

"For six hundred thousand dollars initially, plus annual payments."

Claire stared at Adrian.

"You had a daughter."

His eyes were wet.

"I did not know."

Lena continued reading.

The agreement required Vanessa to relocate before the child's birth.

It required her to tell Adrian and Margaret that the pregnancy had ended.

It required her to waive any claim against the Cole family.

Most importantly, it required her never to seek a legal determination of paternity.

Claire understood immediately.

"Because a legal determination would have triggered the trust."

Lena nodded.

"Exactly."

Adrian sat down.

"Victor stole seven years from me."

Claire looked at him.

"Vanessa agreed to it."

"She was twenty-one."

"And she was a mother."

Adrian looked at Claire sharply.

She did not soften the point.

"Victor exploited her."

Claire's voice remained steady.

"And she still chose to tell you your child was dead."

Adrian lowered his eyes.

"Both things can be true."

Margaret whispered, "Where is Lillian?"

Keene turned to the last page.

"We found a guardianship record."

The room went silent.

Lillian had been placed at age two with Vanessa's older sister, Rachel Hartman, in Vermont.

The arrangement was private but legal.

Vanessa retained parental rights.

Rachel handled schooling and day-to-day care.

"Is she safe?"

Adrian asked.

"Yes."

His entire body seemed to sag with relief.

"Does she know who I am?"

Keene shook his head.

"We do not know what she has been told."

Claire looked at Adrian.

He had missed first words.

First steps.

Birthdays.

School photographs.

Loose teeth.

Seven years stolen by a lie.

Claire could not imagine that grief.

Then she remembered the night he left her frightened in an emergency room while he slept with Vanessa.

Compassion and anger sat beside each other without cancelling anything.

Lena folded her hands.

"Before anyone contacts Lillian, you need family-law counsel in Vermont."

Adrian nodded.

"Whatever protects her."

Claire noticed the answer.

It was the first time he had spoken about one of his children without speaking about himself.

Keene left to continue the investigation.

Later, when the room was quiet, Adrian stood beside Noah's bassinet.

"I do not expect you to feel sorry for me."

Claire looked at him.

"I do feel sorry for you."

He looked surprised.

"That does not mean I trust you."

His shoulders dropped.

"I understand."

"You keep saying that."

"Because I am starting to."

Claire studied him.

He looked older than he had four days earlier.

"Why did you take off your ring?"

He looked at his hand.

"Vanessa told me the paternity result meant our marriage was built on a lie."

"And you believed her."

"I wanted to believe something that made my own behavior less ugly."

Claire went still.

That was the most honest thing he had said.

"Explain."

Adrian looked at her.

"If you had betrayed me first, then I could pretend what I did with Vanessa was not as bad."

Claire's eyes burned.

"But I did not betray you."

"No."

"You needed me guilty so you could live with yourself."

"Yes."

Claire looked away.

The truth hurt, but it was clean.

She preferred clean pain to contaminated love.

"Thank you for finally saying it correctly."

Adrian nodded.

He did not ask for forgiveness.

That mattered too.

At sunset, Lena received an email from Cole Meridian's board counsel.

Victor had called an emergency meeting for the next morning.

He planned to suspend Adrian as chief executive pending the paternity litigation.

Adrian laughed once.

"There is no paternity litigation anymore."

Lena looked at him.

"He does not know we found Lillian."

Claire looked toward the sealed archive documents.

Then she looked at Adrian.

"Do not tell him."

A slow understanding crossed his face.

Margaret smiled for the first time in days.

"Let Victor call his meeting."

Claire nodded.

"Let him explain to the board why Adrian has no proven biological heirs."

Lena picked up the seven-year-old paternity report.

"And then we show them he has had one all along."
