Chapter 8 - The Sample That Changed Hands.

The courier bay footage lasted only eleven seconds.
That was enough.
At 3:07 p.m., a hospital employee placed the locked genetic transport box on a secured counter.
At 3:08 p.m., a man in blue scrubs entered using an active contractor badge.
At 3:09 p.m., the transport box left with the courier.
The footage did not show the man opening the box.
It did not need to.
His presence violated every chain-of-custody rule Dana had put in place.
"Who is he?"
Claire asked.
Dana enlarged the badge image.
The name was partially blurred.
The company logo was not.
Bellweather Reproductive Center.
"We are identifying him now."
Adrian paced once across the room and stopped.
"This is no longer just fraud."
Claire looked at him.
"It was never just fraud."
"Someone is trying to establish that I am not Lucy's father."
"Someone tried to establish you were not the father of any of them."
He rubbed his forehead.
"Why change strategy?"
Claire looked at Lucy sleeping against her chest.
"Because the first lie collapsed."
Margaret nodded.
"If two children are proven to be Adrian's, the inheritance clause activates anyway."
Adrian turned toward her.
"Unless there is a challenge to the validity of the testing."
Dana looked grim.
"Or a challenge to whether the children were conceived through authorized embryos."
Claire felt sick.
"The fourth code."
"Exactly."
The fake embryo record could be used to claim that at least one child came from an unauthorized source.
The substituted paternity sample could support the false claim.
The switched hospital bracelet could make the chain of identity look unreliable.
Each lie reinforced the others.
Whoever designed the plan understood litigation.
Claire looked at Adrian.
"Victor."
He nodded.
"He is a lawyer."
"So are you."
"And I know exactly how much confusion can delay a trust transfer."
Claire heard regret in his voice.
Not just because he had been fooled.
Because his affair had given the scheme credibility.
Vanessa did not need to invent every scandal.
She had built the false ones around a real betrayal.
Claire looked at him.
"She used you because you were willing to be used."
Adrian did not argue.
"Yes."
Margaret looked down at Lucy.
"Where is Vanessa now?"
Dana checked her phone.
"Security says she left the property."
"And Victor?"
"Gone as well."
Claire did not believe either of them was finished.
At seven, a detective from the hospital police unit arrived.
His name was James Keene.
He listened while Claire described the forged consent form, the fake email, the paternity report, the wrong bracelet, and Vanessa's undisclosed connection to Bellweather.
When she finished, Keene looked toward Adrian.
"Mr. Cole, I need your phone."
Adrian handed it over immediately.
"You have my consent to copy everything."
Keene nodded.
"Including messages with Ms. Hart?"
Adrian's face tightened.
"Including those."
Claire looked away.
She had wanted truth.
Now she would have to live through every ugly detail required to prove it.
Keene asked Adrian when the affair began.
"May twenty-third."
Claire knew the date instantly.
It was the night of her prenatal bleeding scare.
She had spent four hours in the emergency department.
Adrian had arrived late because he said a board dinner had run long.
Claire stared at him.
He understood what she remembered.
"You were with her that night."
His voice was barely audible.
"Yes."
Margaret whispered his name in horror.
Claire felt something inside her become quiet.
Not healed.
Not numb.
Finished.
There were betrayals a marriage might survive.
There were others that permanently changed the shape of love.
Adrian had known his pregnant wife was frightened in a hospital and had still chosen another woman's bed.
Claire turned toward Detective Keene.
"Please continue."
Adrian flinched as if she had dismissed him from something larger than the conversation.
Keene copied the phone.
Near midnight, he returned with one message highlighted.
It had been sent by Vanessa three weeks before the birth.
WHEN THIS IS OVER, YOU WILL FINALLY BE FREE OF ALL OF IT.
Adrian had replied.
I JUST WANT THE TRUTH.
Vanessa answered.
YOU WILL HAVE IT, AND SO WILL VICTOR.
Claire looked at Adrian.
"You saw his name."
Adrian stared at the screen.
"I thought she meant Victor would learn the paternity result because of the trust."
"Did you ask her why she was talking to him?"
"No."
Claire closed her eyes.
Keene continued scrolling.
Another message appeared from Vanessa.
HE PROMISED THE BOARD WILL NOT BLAME YOU.
Adrian sat down hard in the chair.
"I never saw that message."
Keene looked at him.
"It was deleted from the visible thread but recovered from the device backup."
Claire opened her eyes.
"She was talking to Victor."
Keene nodded.
"We believe so."
His phone rang.
He stepped into the hallway to answer.
When he returned, his expression was different.
"We identified the man in the courier bay."
Dana stood.
"Who is he?"
"His name is Marcus Vale."
Claire had never heard it.
Adrian had.
"Victor's driver."
Margaret stared at him.
"He used to work for Bellweather?"
"No."
Keene held up the enlarged badge image.
"The Bellweather credential was issued yesterday under a false employment record."
Claire's throat tightened.
"So Victor put him there."
Keene did not answer directly.
"We are obtaining warrants."
Then Mia rushed into the room.
"Lucy is gone."
Claire's entire body went cold.
She looked at the bassinet.
It was empty.
