Chapter 16 - The Girl in the Red Coat.

Claire showed the photograph to Detective Keene before she showed it to Adrian.
Keene arrived within twelve minutes.
He looked at the image, the metadata, and the message.
"Do not respond."
Claire nodded.
"Is that Lillian?"
"We believe so."
Adrian stood near the door, white-faced with anger.
"Where was the photograph taken?"
Keene looked at him.
"Vermont."
"Today?"
"The metadata was stripped."
"Then how do you know?"
"The school is visible in the background."
Adrian grabbed his coat.
Claire stopped him.
"Where are you going?"
"Vermont."
"No."
He looked at her as if he had misheard.
"Claire, someone just sent a threat involving my daughter."
"Which is exactly why you do not drive four hours in a panic and lead whoever is watching straight to her."
He stared at her.
Keene nodded.
"She is right."
Adrian's jaw clenched.
"Then what are you doing?"
"Local officers are already with Rachel Hartman and the child."
Adrian closed his eyes.
"Is she safe?"
"Yes."
The word changed him instantly.
His shoulders dropped.
Claire understood the relief because she had felt the same thing when Lucy was found in the elevator.
Keene continued.
"Rachel has agreed to relocate temporarily."
"Does Lillian know why?"
"No."
"Good."
Adrian sat down.
Claire watched him struggle with seven years of fatherhood arriving in pieces.
Keene placed the printed photograph into an evidence sleeve.
"The message came from a prepaid device activated near Victor's apartment building."
Margaret looked furious.
"Then arrest him."
"We need more than location proximity."
"He threatened a child."
"Someone threatened a child."
Margaret looked ready to argue.
Lena touched her arm.
"Let them build the case correctly."
Keene's phone rang.
He stepped out.
When he returned, he looked at Adrian.
"We have preliminary DNA results on Lillian."
No one moved.
Adrian gripped the arms of the chair.
"And?"
"She is your biological daughter."
Adrian bowed his head.
For a long time, he said nothing.
Then his shoulders began to shake.
Margaret went to him.
Claire looked away, giving him the privacy of not being watched too closely.
She held Grace against her chest.
Three days ago, Adrian had believed he might not have any biological children.
Now he had four.
Three newborns in a hospital room.
One seven-year-old who had lived her entire life without knowing him.
The irony was almost unbearable.
When Adrian finally looked up, his face was wet.
"Does she know?"
Keene shook his head.
"Her guardian wants a child psychologist involved before anyone tells her."
"She is right."
Claire looked at him.
He nodded.
"I am not going to crash into her life because I am angry about what I missed."
Claire felt something loosen inside her.
Not trust.
Respect, perhaps.
A very small amount.
"Good."
Later that afternoon, Rachel Hartman agreed to a secure video call with Adrian.
Claire offered to leave the room.
Adrian surprised her.
"Please stay."
She hesitated.
"Why?"
"Because if I start making this about what I want, I need someone here who will tell me."
Claire looked at him for a long moment.
Then she stayed.
Rachel appeared on the screen from an unfamiliar living room.
She looked like Vanessa around the eyes, but everything else about her seemed softer.
"Adrian."
"Rachel."
Neither knew how to begin.
Rachel did it first.
"Lillian thinks her father died before she was born."
Adrian flinched.
"Who told her that?"
"Vanessa."
"Why?"
Rachel's expression hardened.
"Because lies were easier than explanations."
Adrian swallowed.
"Is she happy?"
Rachel's face softened.
"Mostly."
"Does she like school?"
"She loves science and hates spelling."
Adrian laughed through tears.
"I hated spelling."
Rachel nodded.
"She collects rocks."
"I did that too."
Claire looked down at Grace and felt a strange ache.
Genes announcing themselves through tiny habits.
A life continuing even when adults hid the truth.
Rachel looked at Claire on the screen.
"You must be Claire."
Claire nodded.
"I am."
"I'm sorry."
Claire knew she meant more than one thing.
"Thank you."
Rachel's eyes filled.
"Vanessa told me you were cruel to her."
Adrian went still.
Claire almost laughed.
"We had met twice before this week."
Rachel shook her head slowly.
"Then I have a lot to rethink."
Before the call ended, Rachel promised to work with professionals on a safe plan for Lillian.
Adrian did not ask for immediate contact.
He asked only to send a letter when the psychologist thought it was appropriate.
After the screen went dark, Claire looked at him.
"That was the right choice."
He nodded.
"I have made enough wrong ones."
An hour later, Keene returned with another update.
Victor's apartment had been searched under warrant.
They found no prepaid phone.
They did find something else.
A file folder labeled LILLIAN.
Inside were seven years of private photographs.
School arrivals.
Birthday parties.
Parks.
Doctor appointments.
Victor had been watching the child for years.
At the bottom of the folder was a handwritten note.
THE TRUST MUST NEVER SEE HER.
