Chapter 6 - The Inheritance Clause.

Margaret knew the answer before anyone else in the room spoke.

Claire saw it in the way the older woman's shoulders dropped.

She saw it in the sudden fear behind the shock.

"What does that mean?"

Claire asked the question slowly.

Margaret looked at Adrian.

"Tell her."

Adrian's face was pale.

"My father's trust has a succession clause."

Claire stared at him.

"What kind of succession clause?"

"Cole Meridian was built as a family-controlled company."

"I know that."

"What you do not know is that my voting shares are held in trust until I have a biological child or turn forty-five."

Claire blinked.

"You are thirty-three."

"Yes."

"So if you have a biological child, what happens?"

"The shares transfer to me outright."

Claire looked toward the bassinets.

Three sleeping babies.

Three children who had been celebrated as miracles.

Three children who now represented control of a company worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

Her stomach turned.

"And if you do not have a biological child?"

Margaret answered.

"The voting control remains with the family trust."

"Who controls the trust?"

A silence passed through the room.

Then Adrian said a name.

"My uncle, Victor Cole."

Claire leaned back against the pillow.

Victor Cole was Adrian's father's younger brother.

He was charming in public, impossible in private, and permanently disappointed that Adrian had been chosen to lead the company.

Claire had never liked him.

She had also never considered him capable of something like this.

"If the babies are not Adrian's, Victor keeps control."

Margaret nodded.

"For at least twelve more years."

"And if something happened to Adrian before then?"

Adrian's eyes hardened.

"Victor would likely become permanent chair."

Claire felt cold despite the warm hospital room.

Dana placed Monroe's letter on the tray.

"Do we know whether Victor had any relationship with Bellweather?"

Margaret's face tightened.

"Cole Meridian invested in a healthcare technology fund three years ago."

Adrian turned toward her.

"What does that have to do with Bellweather?"

"I don't know."

"Mother."

Margaret looked at him.

"Victor managed the fund."

Adrian took out his phone.

Claire stopped him.

"Do not call him."

He looked at her.

"If he is involved—"

"Then the last thing we should do is tell him what we know."

For the first time since Claire woke, Adrian listened immediately.

He put the phone away.

Claire noticed and hated that some part of her still recognized the man she had married.

The feeling lasted less than a second.

Then she remembered Vanessa's hand in his.

Dana contacted hospital legal counsel and asked that the flash drive be copied without connecting it to the hospital network.

Two hours later, they viewed the files on an isolated laptop.

Monroe had saved spreadsheets, access logs, screenshots, and photographs of handwritten laboratory notes.

One spreadsheet contained Claire's patient identification number.

Beside it were three legitimate embryo codes.

Below those three was a fourth line.

MON-214.

The fourth line had no donor name.

No genetic source.

No cryostorage location.

Only a note.

PLACEHOLDER CREATED BY V.H.

Claire stared at the initials.

"Vanessa Hart."

Mia nodded.

"It looks like it."

The file creation date was six days before Claire's embryo transfer.

Adrian's face darkened.

"Why create a fake embryo code?"

Dana scrolled through Monroe's notes.

"Maybe to make it look like an unapproved donor embryo was used."

Claire looked at the fake paternity report.

The plan suddenly became visible.

Not complete, but visible.

"She did not need to switch an embryo."

Everyone looked at her.

"She only needed records that made it look possible."

Adrian stepped closer.

"Then the paternity test makes the false record look real."

"And the wrong bracelet makes the hospital look compromised."

Dana nodded grimly.

"Enough confusion to challenge parentage."

Margaret pressed both hands against the edge of the table.

"And enough time for Victor to delay the trust transfer."

Claire thought of Vanessa arriving at the hospital before dawn.

She thought of the forged consent form.

She thought of the deleted camera footage.

"How would she know hospital systems well enough to do all this?"

Dana looked at Monroe's files.

"Maybe she did not."

Adrian's phone vibrated.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

"It's Victor."

Claire's pulse quickened.

"Do not answer."

The call stopped.

A text arrived immediately afterward.

Adrian read it silently.

"What did he say?"

Adrian handed Claire the phone.

The message was short.

I HEARD THE TEST RESULTS ARE COMPLICATED.

Claire looked up.

"Who told him?"

Nobody answered.

Another message appeared.

DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING UNTIL WE TALK.

Margaret went pale.

Claire handed the phone back.

"He knows."

Adrian's jaw hardened.

"Or Vanessa told him."

Claire looked at him.

"And you are going to do something you should have done months ago."

"What?"

"You are going to let him believe we are still confused."

Adrian stared at her.

"You want me to lie to him."

"I want you to stop giving every dangerous person in your life the truth before you give it to your wife."

He absorbed the sentence without defending himself.

Then he typed a reply.

WE'RE WAITING ON MORE INFORMATION.

Victor responded almost instantly.

I'M COMING TO THE HOSPITAL.

Claire looked at Dana.

"Can you keep him out?"

Dana nodded.

"Yes."

Claire turned toward the bassinets.

Noah had opened his eyes.

His tiny face was calm.

Claire touched his hand through the blanket.

"Good."

Adrian looked at her.

"Good?"

Claire's voice was soft.

"Because if Victor wants to see what he thinks belongs to him, he can wait outside the door."
