Chapter 3 - The Signature I Never Gave.

By afternoon, the flowers in Claire's room had begun to feel insulting.
White roses from Adrian's law firm filled one corner.
Pink peonies from Margaret crowded the windowsill.
A basket from Bellweather Reproductive Center sat unopened near the door.
Claire stared at the clinic's silver logo until anger steadied her breathing.
Dana Lowell returned carrying a thin folder.
Dr. Harris came with her.
Adrian remained in the room despite Claire's repeated requests that he leave.
She finally stopped wasting energy on him.
"We found three consent documents signed under your name between 1:48 and 2:20 this morning," Dana said.
Claire's mouth went dry.
"Three?"
Dana placed photocopies on the rolling tray.
"One authorized emergency transfusion."
"I remember signing that."
"One authorized the release of placental tissue for testing."
Claire frowned.
"I don't remember that."
"The third authorized disclosure of neonatal genetic information to a third party named Vanessa Hart."
Margaret made a sound of disbelief.
Adrian stepped forward.
"That cannot be right."
Claire looked at him.
"Now you believe something cannot be right?"
He stopped.
Dana pointed to the signature.
It looked like Claire's handwriting from a distance.
Up close, the C was too round.
The final e tilted the wrong way.
Claire knew immediately.
"I did not sign this."
Dana nodded.
"We have frozen all external disclosures and opened a formal security investigation."
Claire stared at Vanessa's name.
"How did she get listed as a recipient?"
"That is what we are trying to determine."
"Was she in the building?"
Dana exchanged a glance with Dr. Harris.
"Her name appears on a visitor access log at 12:31 a.m."
Adrian's face changed.
"She told me she arrived at six."
Claire almost laughed.
"Your mistress lied to you."
He looked ashamed.
"I understand what this looks like."
"No, Adrian."
Claire turned toward him.
"You understand what part of it looks like."
She tapped the paternity report.
"You still have not explained why you believed her before you believed me."
His jaw tightened.
"There was an email."
Claire waited.
"What email?"
"A message that appeared to be from you to someone named Daniel Monroe."
Claire's skin chilled.
Monroe.
The wrong baby bracelet had read BABY GIRL MONROE.
"Show me."
Adrian took out his phone.
He opened a screenshot.
The email appeared to come from Claire's private account.
It said she could not keep hiding what happened at the clinic.
It said Adrian could never know.
It ended with one line.
OUR DAUGHTER DESERVES THE TRUTH.
Claire read it twice.
"This is fake."
"I know that now."
"You know that now because a hospital bracelet was switched?"
"Because Daniel Monroe doesn't exist in any way I can verify."
Claire looked at the date.
The email had been sent six weeks earlier.
That was the week Adrian had started coming home late.
The week he had begun sleeping in the guest room because he claimed work was overwhelming.
The week Claire had apologized to him for being emotional.
A wave of humiliation moved through her so quickly she had to close her eyes.
"She manufactured an affair for me while starting one with you."
Adrian said nothing.
Margaret's expression turned murderous.
"And you fell for it."
Adrian looked at his mother.
"I did not sleep with Vanessa because of one email."
Claire opened her eyes.
He had finally said something honest.
It hurt more than another lie would have.
"Then why?"
Adrian stared at the floor.
"Because I was angry."
"At me?"
"At everything."
"That is convenient."
"It is not an excuse."
"No."
Claire's voice went quiet.
"It is a confession."
The door opened suddenly.
Mia stepped inside and closed it behind her.
Her eyes moved to Dana.
"The camera archive for the nursery hallway is missing from 1:55 to 2:22."
Dana stood.
"Missing how?"
"Deleted."
"That system cannot be deleted by floor staff."
"I know."
Mia held out a printed audit log.
"It was removed using an administrator credential."
Claire watched Dana's face drain of color.
"Whose credential?"
Mia looked toward the basket from Bellweather Reproductive Center.
"The credential belongs to a contractor assigned to the hospital's genetics interface."
Claire followed her gaze.
"Bellweather?"
Mia nodded slowly.
"The contractor is Bellweather."
A cold silence settled over the room.
Claire looked at the clinic basket again.
A small white card was tucked between the flowers.
She asked Margaret to bring it to her.
Margaret pulled the card free.
The message was only five words.
CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR THREE MIRACLES.
There was no signature.
But when Claire lifted the card closer, she caught the faint scent of vanilla perfume.
