Chapter 13 - The Papers I Signed Awake.

By the next morning, Claire had decided that no one would put another document in front of her while she was weak and expect her to sign without reading it.
She called Lena Brooks, an attorney she had known since college.
Lena arrived at the hospital wearing a charcoal suit, flat shoes, and the expression of a woman who had already decided whom she disliked.
She hugged Claire carefully.
Then she looked at Adrian.
"You can stay if Claire wants you here."
Adrian looked at Claire.
Claire nodded once.
"He stays."
Lena opened her briefcase.
"Good."
She placed a legal pad on the tray.
"Then everyone hears the same thing at the same time."
For the next hour, Claire told her everything.
The affair.
The fake email.
The secret paternity test.
The fourth embryo code.
The forged hospital consent.
The sedative order.
The switched bracelet.
Lucy's attempted removal.
Victor's proposed agreement.
Lena did not interrupt often.
When Claire finished, she looked at Adrian.
"Do you dispute any of that?"
Adrian's face was tired.
"No."
"Do you dispute the affair?"
"No."
"Do you dispute authorizing the original private paternity test?"
"No."
"Do you dispute giving Vanessa access to information about your marriage and fertility treatment?"
Adrian swallowed.
"No."
Lena wrote something down.
Claire watched him answer without excuses.
It was too late to save their marriage by itself.
But it mattered that he had finally stopped editing reality.
Lena looked at Claire.
"There are two separate battles here."
"I know."
"One is criminal and corporate."
Claire nodded.
"And the other is my marriage."
"Yes."
Adrian stared at the floor.
Lena's voice remained calm.
"You do not have to decide the second battle today."
Claire looked at Adrian's bare ring finger.
"I already decided the first part."
He looked up.
Claire felt pain rise in her chest, but she did not look away.
"I am not going home with you."
Adrian closed his eyes for a moment.
"I understand."
"The babies will leave the hospital with me."
"Of course."
"You will have access to them."
His eyes opened.
Claire continued before hope could enter his face.
"But not because we are pretending nothing happened."
"I know."
"You are their father."
She swallowed.
"You are still my husband legally."
Her voice became quieter.
"You are not currently my partner."
Adrian nodded.
"Okay."
Lena slid a document toward Claire.
It was a temporary family agreement drafted that morning.
It covered medical decisions, infant access, residence, and financial transparency.
Claire read every line.
She changed three provisions.
She added one requiring written disclosure of any contact between Adrian and Vanessa.
Adrian signed first.
Claire signed second.
Her hand shook, but the signature was unmistakably hers.
"That one," she said, looking at the ink, "I gave."
Lena understood the significance.
"And we will make sure everyone knows the difference."
Detective Keene arrived before lunch with news from Hannah Price.
She was safe.
She had turned over a box of old Bellweather backup drives and printed laboratory logs.
One log showed Vanessa entering the cryostorage area the night before Claire's embryo transfer.
Another showed Daniel Monroe cancelling a reassignment request involving code MON-214.
Beside the cancellation, Monroe had written a note by hand.
UNAUTHORIZED.
DO NOT RELEASE.
V.H. CLAIMS V.C. APPROVAL.
Adrian stared at the initials.
"Victor Cole."
Keene nodded.
"That is our interpretation."
Lena leaned forward.
"Do you have proof Victor was the V.C.?"
"Not yet."
"Then do not call it proof."
Keene almost smiled.
"You must be the lawyer."
"I am the lawyer who dislikes losing on careless language."
Claire felt safer with her in the room.
Keene continued.
Hannah's backup also contained a payment ledger.
Bellweather had received consulting payments from a company called Meridian Health Strategy.
Adrian frowned.
"That is one of Victor's entities."
"How much?"
Claire asked.
Keene turned the page.
"Two point four million dollars over three years."
Margaret whispered a curse under her breath.
The payments began shortly before Vanessa was hired at Bellweather.
They increased after Claire and Adrian became patients.
They doubled the month Claire became pregnant.
Lena looked at Adrian.
"Your uncle was paying the clinic connected to your fertility treatment while controlling a trust that depended on whether you produced a biological heir."
Adrian nodded.
"Yes."
"Did you know?"
"No."
Claire watched his face.
He looked furious.
She believed that fury.
Then Keene placed another document on the table.
"There is more."
It was a scan of a cashier's check from seven years earlier.
The payer was Victor Cole.
The recipient was Vanessa Hart.
The amount was six hundred thousand dollars.
The memo line read CONSULTING SETTLEMENT.
Claire looked at Adrian.
His face went blank.
"Seven years ago," she said.
He nodded slowly.
"Around the time Vanessa told you she lost the pregnancy."
Margaret sat down.
"Victor paid her."
Lena looked at the birth certificate for Lillian.
"The question is what he paid her to hide."
