CHAPTER 10: THE HUSBAND WHO UNDERESTIMATED HER

CHAPTER 10: THE HUSBAND WHO UNDERESTIMATED HER

Daniel Cross had built his entire life around one belief.

That people could be controlled.

With money.

With fear.

With secrets.

He believed every person had a weakness.

A pressure point.

A hidden fear that could be used against them.

And for years, he had been right.

Employees stayed silent.

Partners backed down.

Enemies disappeared from public life.

Everyone eventually surrendered.

Everyone except me.

That was the part Daniel couldn't understand.

I wasn't stronger because I wasn't afraid.

I was stronger because I finally knew exactly what I was fighting.

And knowledge was the one weapon he couldn't take away from me.

The next morning, I woke up to a message from Natalie Brooks.

The journalist I contacted.

"We need to talk immediately."

I met her at a quiet restaurant downtown.

No cameras.

No reporters.

No attention.

Just three women sitting at a table with the same goal.

The truth.

Natalie looked different from the first time we spoke.

More serious.

More focused.

She placed a folder on the table.

"Daniel Cross is moving faster than expected."

I frowned.

"What did he do?"

She opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

"He's preparing a lawsuit."

"Against me?"

She nodded.

"He's claiming emotional distress, defamation risk, and misuse of confidential information."

I almost laughed.

"He is suing me because I found evidence of his crimes?"

Natalie looked at me.

"That's how people like him fight."

Emily nodded.

"He turns the truth into an attack."

Natalie tapped the documents.

"But there's something else."

"What?"

"He filed a temporary court order to stop any information about Cross Industries from being released."

My expression hardened.

"He wants to silence us."

"Yes."

I looked at the papers.

Daniel wasn't denying anything.

He was trying to make sure nobody could hear it.

That told me something important.

He was afraid.

That afternoon, Daniel called me.

I almost didn't answer.

But I wanted to hear his voice.

I wanted to know if the man who threatened me three days after our wedding still believed he was in control.

"Victoria."

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

"What do you want?"

"I think we need to talk."

"No."

A pause.

"Excuse me?"

"You don't want to talk."

I looked out the window.

"You want to negotiate."

Silence.

Then:

"You've been spending time with people who don't understand our situation."

"Our situation?"

I smiled.

"You mean your situation."

Daniel ignored the comment.

"Come home."

I laughed quietly.

"No."

"Victoria."

"No, Daniel."

My voice became colder.

"You lost the right to tell me where I belong the night you flipped that table."

His breathing changed.

Small.

Almost invisible.

But I noticed.

"You're angry."

"No."

I looked at the evidence on my desk.

"I'm awake."

Silence.

Then he said:

"You really think you know the truth?"

"I know enough."

"No, you don't."

His voice lowered.

"You have no idea what your father did."

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"Interesting."

"What?"

"You still believe that story."

Daniel became quiet.

I continued.

"Even after all these years, you still refuse to question the people who lied to you."

His voice hardened.

"Be careful."

"Why?"

"Because some truths destroy the people who discover them."

I smiled.

"That's the first honest thing you've said."

He hung up.

Two hours later, something unexpected happened.

Someone arrived at my apartment.

Someone I never expected to see.

A member of the Cross family.

Daniel's younger sister.

Sophia Cross.

I had only seen her once before.

At our wedding.

She barely spoke.

She looked uncomfortable the entire night.

Now I understood why.

She stood outside my door.

"I need to talk to you."

I studied her face.

"Why?"

She looked nervous.

"Because Daniel can't know I'm here."

That sentence told me everything.

I let her inside.

She sat down slowly.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she whispered:

"I'm sorry."

I frowned.

"For what?"

"For what my family did."

The words surprised me.

"Your family?"

She nodded.

"My father."

I immediately thought of Richard Cross.

"What do you know?"

Sophia looked down.

"More than Daniel."

The room became silent.

"Daniel believes our father was betrayed by your family."

"He was wrong."

Sophia nodded.

"Yes."

"How long have you known?"

She looked away.

"Years."

My anger rose.

"Then why didn't you say anything?"

Her eyes filled with guilt.

"Because Daniel was not always like this."

I waited.

"When our father died, Daniel changed."

"How?"

"He became obsessed with proving he could rebuild the Cross name."

She swallowed.

"He thought revenge was the only way to honor our father."

I looked at her.

"And you let him?"

The question hurt her.

"I tried."

"How?"

"I showed him documents."

"Which documents?"

"The same ones you found."

My eyes narrowed.

"You knew about Project Eclipse?"

She nodded.

"Rachel showed me."

I froze.

"You knew Rachel was alive?"

Sophia looked down.

"Yes."

"Why didn't you tell Daniel?"

She whispered:

"Because he would have destroyed her."

The room went quiet.

Then Sophia reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small envelope.

"I kept this hidden for years."

"What is it?"

"The last thing my father wrote before he died."

I opened it.

The letter was short.

But the words changed everything.

Daniel,

If you are reading this, it means I failed to protect you from my own mistakes.

My hands tightened.

The letter continued.

I lied to you about Thomas Hale. I was afraid you would hate me if you knew the truth.

I looked at Sophia.

She nodded.

The next sentence made my heart stop.

The Hale family did not destroy us. I destroyed us.

I covered my mouth.

Richard Cross admitted everything.

He confessed.

He knew he was wrong.

And Daniel never knew.

The letter ended with one final sentence.

"My greatest regret is that I taught my son to become like me."

I looked at Sophia.

"Why give this to me?"

She looked at the letter.

"Because Daniel won't listen to anyone."

A pause.

"But maybe he'll listen when the truth comes from the person he tried hardest to control."

Me.

The wife he thought was powerless.

The woman he thought would beg.

The woman he underestimated.

I closed the envelope.

"Daniel will come after you when he finds out."

Sophia nodded.

"I know."

"Then why?"

She looked at me.

"Because someone should have stopped him years ago."

That night, Daniel sat alone in his office.

His assistant placed a report on his desk.

"Mr. Cross."

"What?"

"Your sister visited Victoria."

The room went silent.

Daniel slowly looked up.

"My sister?"

"Yes."

His expression changed.

Not anger.

Betrayal.

Because Daniel could handle enemies.

He could handle journalists.

He could handle lawsuits.

But he never expected his own family to turn against him.

He picked up his phone.

Called Sophia.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

Then he looked at the photograph of me on his desk.

The woman he thought he had chosen.

The woman he thought he could manipulate.

And for the first time...

Daniel Cross understood the truth.

He didn't lose control because Victoria fought back.

He lost control because Victoria made everyone else brave enough to fight too.

And that was far more dangerous.

Because one person could be silenced.

But an entire family?

An entire company?

May you like

A whole world that finally knew the truth?

That was impossible to control.
