CHAPTER 18: THE TRUTH ELEANOR HID

CHAPTER 18: THE TRUTH ELEANOR HID

The room felt smaller.

Much smaller.

Three women.

Three stories.

Three versions of the truth.

My mother stood beside me, holding onto my arm like she was afraid I would disappear.

Claire stood across from us, calm and confident.

And I stood between them...

Trying to understand how the two women I trusted most had hidden the biggest secrets of my life.

"Don't listen to her."

My mother's voice was shaking.

But Claire only smiled.

"Why, Eleanor?"

She tilted her head.

"Because I know the truth?"

My mother's face turned pale.

And that scared me.

Because I had seen Claire manipulate people before.

But I had never seen my mother look afraid of anyone.

Not even once.

"What truth?"

I looked at Claire.

"Tell me."

My mother grabbed my hand.

"Victoria, please."

I looked at her.

"Mom."

The word still felt strange.

Beautiful.

Painful.

"I spent twenty years believing you were dead."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I know."

"I mourned you."

"I know."

"I grew up without you."

She closed her eyes.

"I know."

My voice became stronger.

"Then I deserve the truth."

Silence.

Finally...

My mother nodded.

"Yes."

A tear fell down her face.

"You do."

We sat in the old living room.

The same room where I had spent my childhood.

The same room where my mother used to read me stories.

Except now...

Every memory carried a question.

"Start from the beginning."

My mother looked at the old fireplace.

"Your father and I discovered Richard Cross's crimes together."

I listened.

"We weren't enemies."

She looked at me.

"The Hales and the Crosses were never enemies."

"Then why did Daniel hate us?"

"Because Claire made sure everyone believed a lie."

My mother looked toward Claire.

"She was always good at that."

Claire didn't react.

"She studied people."

My mother continued.

"She learned what they wanted to believe."

"Then she gave it to them."

I understood.

That was Claire's talent.

Not money.

Not power.

Understanding people.

"My mother was Richard Cross's employee?"

I asked.

My mother nodded.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because I wanted to expose him."

She explained.

Richard Cross trusted her because he thought she was loyal.

He showed her everything.

The hidden accounts.

The illegal deals.

The secret agreements.

"But Claire found out."

My mother looked down.

"Yes."

"What happened?"

"She offered me a choice."

I frowned.

"A choice?"

"Join her."

My heart tightened.

"Or?"

"Disappear."

The word hung in the air.

"She threatened you."

My mother nodded.

"She said she would destroy your father."

"She said she would destroy you."

A tear fell.

"And she knew the one thing I couldn't risk."

Me.

My mother had disappeared to protect me.

But something still bothered me.

"Then why didn't you come back?"

Her expression broke.

"Because Claire made sure I couldn't."

"How?"

"She created evidence."

Against my mother.

Against my father.

Against the entire Hale family.

"If I returned, she would release everything."

"What everything?"

My mother looked at Claire.

"The files proving I helped Richard Cross."

I froze.

"But you didn't."

"No."

She shook her head.

"But Claire made it look that way."

I looked at Claire.

"Why?"

She finally spoke.

Her voice was calm.

"Because your mother was going to destroy everything."

"Everything?"

"The system."

I stared at her.

"What system?"

She smiled slightly.

"The world your families built."

I felt anger.

"You ruined people's lives because you wanted control?"

Claire's expression hardened.

"No."

A pause.

"I saved them."

I almost laughed.

"Saved them?"

"Yes."

She stepped closer.

"You think your father was innocent?"

I didn't answer.

"Thomas Hale was a good man."

She nodded.

"But good people can still create disasters."

My mother looked away.

I noticed.

And Claire noticed too.

"You never told her, did you?"

My heart tightened.

"Tell me what?"

My mother stayed silent.

"Mom?"

Claire smiled.

"Ask her why your father was willing to sacrifice everything."

I looked at my mother.

"What is she talking about?"

My mother whispered:

"Victoria..."

"No."

I stepped back.

"Not another secret."

My mother closed her eyes.

"Your father knew about Claire."

I froze.

"What?"

"He knew she was dangerous."

"Then why didn't he stop her?"

A painful silence.

"Because he made a deal."

The room went completely silent.

"A deal?"

My mother nodded.

"Your father believed he could control Claire."

I laughed bitterly.

"Everyone thought they could control her."

She looked at me.

"And everyone was wrong."

"What deal?"

My mother hesitated.

"He agreed to let Claire manage certain parts of the family foundation."

"Why?"

"To protect you."

I shook my head.

"No."

The answer came out immediately.

"That doesn't make sense."

My mother looked at me.

"Your father discovered something."

"What?"

"Someone was trying to take control of both families."

"Who?"

She looked at Claire.

My stomach tightened.

"Claire?"

My mother nodded.

"But she wasn't alone."

Everyone became quiet.

"Not alone?"

My mother took a deep breath.

"There was someone else."

"Who?"

She looked terrified.

"Someone inside our family."

I felt a chill.

Again.

Another hidden person.

Another secret.

"Who?"

My mother didn't answer.

Instead...

Claire did.

"Your father."

My heart stopped.

"What?"

My mother looked at Claire with anger.

"Don't."

But Claire continued.

"Your father started this."

"No."

My voice was firm.

"You're lying."

Claire looked at me.

"Am I?"

She pulled out a document.

"I think you should read it."

I took it.

The signature at the bottom was my father's.

The date was twenty years ago.

The title:

PROJECT ECLIPSE.

My hands shook.

Because I recognized the name.

The same name from Daniel's files.

The same name connected to the entire conspiracy.

I read the first line.

And my heart stopped.

"The objective is simple: remove Richard Cross from power and replace the current structure with one controlled by the Hale family."

I looked at my mother.

Then Claire.

Then the document.

"No..."

My father.

The man I believed was only a victim.

Had a plan.

My mother stepped toward me.

"Victoria, listen to me."

I stepped back.

"Was it true?"

She cried.

"Not the way she wants you to believe."

"Then tell me the truth."

She opened her mouth.

But no words came out.

And that silence hurt.

Because sometimes silence was the loudest answer.

Claire walked toward the door.

"You wanted the truth."

She looked at me.

"Now you have it."

I stared at her.

"You planned all of this."

She smiled.

"No."

A pause.

"I only continued what your father started."

Then she left.

Leaving me with the one question that mattered most.

Who was the real mastermind?

The woman who manipulated everyone?

Or the man who started the game before anyone knew it existed?

That night, Daniel received a message from an unknown number.

Only one sentence.

"Victoria knows about Project Eclipse."

He immediately stood up.

Because he knew what that meant.

The final secret was no longer hidden.

And once Victoria discovered the complete truth...

May you like

Everyone would lose.

Including him.
