CHAPTER 11: THE FALL OF CROSS INDUSTRIES

CHAPTER 11: THE FALL OF CROSS INDUSTRIES
The first crack appeared at 9:07 a.m.
Not a collapse.
Not a disaster.
Just a crack.
A small movement that most people would ignore.
But I knew better.
Empires didn't fall in one day.
They fell one truth at a time.
And the first truth had finally reached the surface.
CROSS INDUSTRIES STOCK DROPS AFTER NEW INVESTIGATION OPENS.
That was the headline.
Not a scandal.
Not an accusation.
An investigation.
Because for the first time in years, people weren't simply believing Daniel Cross.
They were questioning him.
And that terrified him more than anything else.
I watched the news from Natalie's office.
The screen showed analysts discussing Cross Industries.
"Investors are concerned about new allegations involving historical financial practices."
"Sources close to the company suggest internal disagreements among executives."
"Several former employees have agreed to cooperate with investigators."
I looked at Emily.
She whispered:
"They're talking."
I nodded.
"That's what Daniel feared."
For years, Daniel's power came from silence.
People knew things.
They just didn't say them.
But silence was fragile.
Once one person broke it...
Others followed.
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
"Hello?"
A man's voice spoke.
"Mrs. Cross."
I recognized it immediately.
Daniel's attorney.
"How can I help you?"
"You are making a serious mistake."
I almost smiled.
"That sounds familiar."
"This is not a game."
"No."
I looked at the news.
"It never was."
The attorney lowered his voice.
"Mr. Cross is willing to resolve this privately."
"Resolve?"
"Financial compensation. A confidentiality agreement. Protection for your future."
I understood.
Daniel was offering money.
The same weapon he always used.
"Tell Daniel something for me."
"What?"
"He can't buy the truth."
Silence.
Then:
"You don't understand what you're risking."
I answered calmly:
"I understand exactly."
I ended the call.
By noon, Daniel called.
This time, I answered immediately.
"Victoria."
His voice was different.
No confidence.
No arrogance.
Something else.
Pressure.
"You need to stop."
I sat back.
"Why?"
"You know why."
"No, Daniel."
I looked at the evidence.
"The problem is you spent years believing everyone would obey you."
A pause.
"You don't know what you're doing."
"I know exactly what I'm doing."
"You're destroying everything."
I laughed quietly.
"No."
I corrected him.
"I'm exposing what was already destroyed."
His breathing became heavier.
Then he said something unexpected.
"Do you think I wanted this?"
The question surprised me.
"What?"
"Do you think I wanted to become this?"
For a moment...
I almost felt something.
Almost.
Because there was a broken person behind the monster.
But broken people could still hurt others.
Pain was not an excuse.
"Daniel."
"What?"
"You had choices."
Silence.
"Every day, you had choices."
I continued.
"You chose control."
"You chose lies."
"You chose to hurt people."
His voice became cold again.
"You sound just like Rachel."
The name stopped me.
"What does that mean?"
"She thought she could save everyone too."
"And?"
"She failed."
I felt anger rise.
"No."
My voice became sharp.
"She survived."
Silence.
Then Daniel said:
"You really believe that?"
A strange feeling moved through me.
"What are you saying?"
He laughed softly.
"Ask Rachel where she was the night my father died."
My blood ran cold.
"What?"
"You think you know the whole story?"
I stood up.
"Daniel..."
But he had already hung up.
I immediately called Rachel.
She answered after one ring.
"Victoria?"
"Daniel said something about your father's death."
Silence.
A long silence.
Then:
"He told you?"
I froze.
"You knew?"
Rachel sighed.
"I was hoping you would find out another way."
"Find out what?"
She didn't answer.
"Rachel."
Her voice became quiet.
"I was there."
My heart stopped.
"Where?"
"When Richard Cross died."
The room felt colder.
"What happened?"
"I found him unconscious."
"Did you call for help?"
Another silence.
Too long.
"Rachel."
"I tried."
"That's not what I asked."
She closed her eyes.
I could hear the pain in her voice.
"Daniel believes I killed him."
My stomach tightened.
"What?"
"Because I was the last person who saw him alive."
Everything suddenly became more complicated.
Daniel wasn't just hiding the truth.
Maybe he was hiding his own version of it.
That evening, I met Rachel.
She looked exhausted.
"I knew this day would come."
"What happened that night?"
She took a deep breath.
"Richard wanted to confess."
"Confess?"
"Everything."
She explained.
The financial crimes.
The lies.
The way he manipulated Daniel.
"He wanted to tell the truth before it was too late."
"Then what happened?"
"He collapsed."
"And you?"
"I called emergency services."
"Did they arrive?"
Rachel nodded.
"But Richard died before they could save him."
I looked at her.
"Then why does Daniel think you killed him?"
Rachel looked away.
"Because someone changed the evidence."
My heart tightened.
"Who?"
"I don't know."
A pause.
"But I know one thing."
"What?"
"Daniel was given a false story."
Again.
Someone had controlled the truth.
Someone had manipulated him.
But who?
Later that night, Natalie sent me an urgent message.
"You need to see this."
Attached was a video.
A recording from inside Cross Industries.
I opened it.
The quality was poor.
But the voices were clear.
One belonged to Daniel.
The other...
I didn't recognize.
The stranger spoke first.
"Your father believed the truth would save you."
Daniel answered:
"My father was weak."
The stranger laughed.
"Exactly why you were easier to control."
I froze.
Easier to control?
Daniel sounded angry.
"Be careful."
The stranger continued:
"You spent years blaming the wrong people."
Silence.
Then:
"Just like I wanted."
My hands went cold.
Because now I understood.
Daniel wasn't the only person playing a game.
Someone had been behind him.
Someone had been guiding his revenge.
Someone had been using Daniel Cross as a weapon.
The next morning, the world woke up to another headline.
Not about Daniel.
About someone else.
"MYSTERY INVESTOR CONNECTED TO CROSS INDUSTRIES REVEALED."
I opened the article.
And my heart stopped.
The name at the top belonged to someone I knew.
Someone I trusted.
Someone who had been helping Daniel from the beginning.
Because the person controlling the fall of Cross Industries...
May you like
Was not outside the family.
It was inside.
