CHAPTER 15: THE SECRET ELEANOR LEFT BEHIND

CHAPTER 15: THE SECRET ELEANOR LEFT BEHIND

The letter from my mother sat on my desk for three hours.

I didn't open it.

Not because I wasn't curious.

Because I was afraid.

For years, I had wondered what my mother would say if she were still alive.

I imagined a thousand possibilities.

A goodbye.

A confession.

A message telling me she loved me.

I never imagined this.

A secret.

A warning.

A final attempt to protect me from a danger I never knew existed.

I ran my fingers across the envelope.

The handwriting was hers.

I knew it immediately.

Even after all these years.

A child remembers things adults think they forget.

The way someone writes your name.

The way someone holds your hand.

The sound of their voice.

My mother was gone.

But somehow...

She had found a way to speak to me.

Emily sat across from me.

"You don't have to read it tonight."

I looked at her.

"Yes, I do."

"Why?"

"Because everyone else knew the truth before me."

I opened the envelope.

"And I'm done being the last person to know."

Inside was a single letter.

Three pages.

Three pages that changed my entire life.

The letter began:

My dearest Victoria,

I stopped.

My eyes filled instantly.

She wrote my name.

Not my father's.

Not Daniel's.

Mine.

If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you the way I promised I would.

I swallowed.

But I need you to know something. Everything you were told about our family is incomplete.

I continued.

The Cross family did not destroy us. The Hales did not destroy them. The truth is much more complicated.

My heart tightened.

My mother knew.

She knew the hatred between our families was built on lies.

The letter continued.

Richard Cross was dangerous, but he was not the only person responsible.

I stopped.

Not the only person?

Emily leaned closer.

"What does she mean?"

I kept reading.

There was someone else. Someone who had access to both families. Someone who benefited from our destruction.

My fingers tightened around the paper.

Who?

Who could have controlled two powerful families?

Who could have caused decades of hatred?

Then came the sentence that made me freeze.

The person you should fear is not the person who hates you. It is the person who claims to love you.

The room became silent.

Emily looked at me.

"Victoria..."

I couldn't answer.

Because one name immediately entered my mind.

A person who always appeared whenever I needed help.

A person who knew too much.

A person who had been close to both families.

I continued reading.

Richard believed he controlled everything. He was wrong.

Your father believed he could fix everything. He was wrong.

Daniel believed revenge would give him peace. He was wrong.

A tear fell onto the page.

My mother understood all of them.

But the person behind the lies never wanted money. Never wanted power.

They wanted something more dangerous.

They wanted control over the people who had it.

I looked at Emily.

"What does that mean?"

She shook her head.

"I don't know."

I turned the page.

The final paragraph was shorter.

But it was the most important.

Victoria, trust your instincts. You have always seen people clearly. The only mistake you made was believing love would make dangerous people harmless.

I closed my eyes.

Because that sentence felt like it was written for me.

For Daniel.

For everything that happened.

Then the final line appeared.

The evidence is hidden where our family began.

"The beginning of our family."

I repeated the words.

Emily thought for a moment.

"Where did your parents meet?"

I looked at her.

"My father never talked about it."

"Maybe someone else knows."

There was only one person left.

Daniel.

I found him at Cross Industries.

Not because I trusted him.

Because I needed answers.

His assistant tried to stop me.

"Mrs. Cross, Mr. Cross is busy."

I looked at her.

"Tell him I know about Eleanor."

The assistant's face changed.

Five seconds later...

The door opened.

Daniel stood there.

"Come inside."

I walked in.

For once, he didn't act like he owned the room.

He looked nervous.

"What did you find?"

I placed the letter on his desk.

"My mother's final message."

His eyes moved to the paper.

"What did she say?"

"That someone destroyed both families."

Daniel looked away.

"She's right."

I studied him.

"You know who?"

"No."

"You're lying."

His jaw tightened.

"Victoria."

"No."

I stepped closer.

"You spent years searching for revenge. You investigated my family. You created a plan to marry me."

His expression changed.

"You think I don't see the pattern?"

Silence.

Then I said:

"You know more than you admit."

Daniel looked at the letter.

"I know enough to know that my father wasn't the only person responsible."

"Then who?"

He didn't answer.

"Daniel."

Finally, he whispered:

"Your mother trusted someone."

"Who?"

He looked at me.

"Someone who was there before everyone else."

My heart stopped.

"Who?"

Daniel hesitated.

Then said:

"Your mother's closest friend."

I frowned.

"My mother's friend?"

"Yes."

"Who?"

Daniel looked at the door.

Almost like he was afraid someone might hear.

Then he said the name.

And my entire world changed.

Because the person he named...

Was someone who had comforted me after my father's death.

Someone who had helped raise me.

Someone I had called family.

I returned home in shock.

Emily looked at my face.

"What happened?"

I couldn't speak.

She stood.

"Victoria?"

I whispered:

"Daniel knows who did it."

"Who?"

I looked at her.

"The person behind everything."

A pause.

"Who?"

I answered:

"My aunt."

Emily froze.

"Your aunt?"

I nodded slowly.

"My mother's sister."

The woman who had been beside me my entire life.

The woman who told me she loved me.

The woman who helped me survive losing my parents.

The woman who always said:

"Family protects family."

I finally understood.

Sometimes the most dangerous person isn't the one standing against you.

It's the one standing beside you.

That night, my phone rang.

A familiar voice answered.

"Victoria?"

My blood ran cold.

"Aunt Claire."

Silence.

Then she laughed softly.

"You're asking questions you shouldn't ask."

My heart stopped.

"How do you know?"

Another pause.

Then:

"Because I was the one who taught Daniel how to find you."

I couldn't move.

The woman who raised me.

The woman who loved me.

The woman I trusted.

Was connected to everything.

And then she said the words that ended my old life forever.

"Victoria, you were never Daniel Cross's target."

May you like

A pause.

"You were mine."
