CHAPTER 16: THE WOMAN WHO CONTROLLED EVERYTHING

CHAPTER 16: THE WOMAN WHO CONTROLLED EVERYTHING

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

The phone was still pressed against my ear.

Aunt Claire's voice was still there.

Calm.

Soft.

Almost loving.

The same voice I had heard my entire life.

The voice that comforted me when I lost my parents.

The voice that told me I was never alone.

The voice I trusted more than anyone.

And now...

That same voice had just admitted something impossible.

I was never Daniel Cross's target.

I was hers.

My hand tightened around the phone.

"Why?"

Aunt Claire didn't answer immediately.

That scared me more than anything.

Because Daniel always reacted with anger.

Richard Cross reacted with arrogance.

But Claire...

Claire thought.

She calculated.

She waited.

"Victoria..."

Her voice was gentle.

"You sound hurt."

I laughed quietly.

"Hurt?"

I looked around the room.

At the photographs.

At the memories.

At everything I believed was real.

"You lied to me my entire life."

A pause.

"No."

Her answer surprised me.

"I protected you."

I felt anger rise.

"By manipulating me?"

"By keeping you alive."

The words stopped me.

"What?"

"You think the world is as simple as good people and bad people?"

"No."

My voice became cold.

"But I know betrayal when I see it."

Claire sighed.

"You always had your father's stubbornness."

My heart tightened.

"Don't talk about my father."

"Why?"

Her voice changed.

"Because you don't know him either."

The sentence hit me.

Another person telling me my entire life was a lie.

Another secret.

Another truth hidden behind people who claimed to love me.

"What did you do?"

Silence.

Then:

"Everything."

I didn't sleep that night.

I couldn't.

Every memory with Claire replayed in my head.

My sixth birthday.

She was there.

My first day of college.

She was there.

When my father died.

She held my hand.

When my mother died.

She told me everything would be okay.

How could someone who gave me so much comfort also be the person who destroyed my family?

Emily sat beside me.

"You need to be careful."

I looked at her.

"She knows everything about me."

"Exactly."

"She knows my fears."

"Your habits."

"Your weaknesses."

Emily's expression was serious.

"That's what makes her more dangerous than Daniel."

The words hurt.

Because they were true.

Daniel tried to control me.

Claire already knew how.

The next morning, I received a package.

No sender.

No address.

Inside was an old journal.

My mother's journal.

I recognized the handwriting immediately.

My heart raced.

A note was attached.

"You wanted the truth. Now you get all of it."

I opened the first page.

The journal began years before I was born.

My mother wrote about Richard Cross.

About Thomas Hale.

About Claire.

The first entry about my aunt made me stop.

Claire is brilliant. Too brilliant.

I continued.

She understands people better than anyone I've ever met. That's what scares me.

Another page.

She says she wants to protect our family. But sometimes I feel like she wants to own it.

My hands trembled.

My mother knew.

She suspected Claire.

I kept reading.

The truth slowly appeared.

Claire wasn't born into power.

She studied it.

She observed wealthy families.

She learned their habits.

Their weaknesses.

Their secrets.

She understood something most people didn't.

Powerful people weren't destroyed by enemies.

They were destroyed by the people they trusted.

The journal continued.

Claire doesn't want money. She wants influence.

She wants to be the person everyone depends on.

She wants to become impossible to replace.

I looked at Emily.

"She built herself into the center of everyone's lives."

Emily nodded.

"Exactly."

Then I found the page that changed everything.

The date was twenty years ago.

The year everything collapsed.

My mother wrote:

I discovered Claire had been communicating with Richard Cross.

I stopped breathing.

Not working with him.

Communicating.

There was a difference.

The next lines were worse.

She gave him information about Thomas.

She gave him information about me.

She gave him information about our daughter.

Our daughter.

Me.

I closed the journal.

"No."

Emily looked at me.

"Victoria..."

"She sold me."

The realization was painful.

Claire didn't just manipulate events.

She used me as a piece on a board.

The final pages were missing.

Someone had torn them out.

Of course.

The most important part.

The part Claire didn't want anyone to see.

But there was one thing left.

A small envelope hidden inside the journal.

My mother's handwriting.

For Victoria.

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

My mother.

My father.

Claire.

And one more person.

Daniel's father.

All four together.

On the back:

"The night everything changed."

I took the photograph to Daniel.

This time, he didn't look surprised.

"You knew."

It wasn't a question.

Daniel looked tired.

"I suspected."

"You knew Claire was involved."

"Not everything."

"How long?"

He looked away.

"Since before our wedding."

My anger exploded.

"You knew and still married me?"

His eyes met mine.

"I married you because I thought I could protect you."

I laughed bitterly.

"Protect me?"

"I was wrong."

The honesty surprised me.

Daniel continued.

"My father told me one thing before he died."

"What?"

"Never trust the person who brings two enemies together."

I looked at the photograph.

"Claire."

He nodded.

"She was the connection between both families."

For the first time...

Daniel and I weren't enemies.

We were two people standing in the ruins of a story someone else wrote.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Daniel looked down.

"Because I was ashamed."

"Of what?"

"Because I spent years hating your family."

A pause.

"When the truth came out, I realized I became exactly like my father."

The words were quiet.

But honest.

And somehow...

That made them more painful.

That evening, Claire called again.

I answered.

This time, I wasn't afraid.

"You found the journal."

Not a question.

"Yes."

She sighed.

"I hoped you would understand."

"Understand what?"

"That everything I did was necessary."

I looked at the evidence.

The lies.

The destroyed families.

"The truth is never necessary to hide."

"You still think this is about truth?"

Her voice became colder.

"This is about survival."

"Whose survival?"

A pause.

Then she said:

"Mine."

I froze.

"Claire..."

"Victoria, you don't know what your mother discovered."

"Then tell me."

"No."

Her voice became almost sad.

"Because once you know..."

A pause.

"You'll understand why I had to choose you."

My heart stopped.

"Choose me for what?"

Claire whispered:

"The final move."

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

The final move.

Those words stayed in my mind.

Because I finally understood.

Daniel thought he was playing a revenge game.

Richard Cross thought he was protecting his empire.

My father thought he was saving his family.

But Claire...

Claire had been playing a completely different game.

She wasn't trying to win.

May you like

She was trying to make sure everyone else lost.

And I was the last piece she needed.
