CHAPTER 17: THE WOMAN WHO NEVER DIED

CHAPTER 17: THE WOMAN WHO NEVER DIED
For three minutes, I didn't move.
I just stared at the document.
The name remained on the page.
Impossible.
Impossible didn't even begin to describe it.
Eleanor Hale.
My mother.
The woman I buried in my memories.
The woman I spent years missing.
The woman everyone told me was gone.
Was alive.
My fingers trembled as I picked up the paper again.
Maybe I was reading it wrong.
Maybe exhaustion had finally caught up with me.
Maybe grief was making me see what I wanted to see.
But the truth didn't change.
The signature was there.
The account was there.
The evidence was there.
My mother had never disappeared.
She had been hidden.
Emily found me sitting on the floor.
She immediately knew something was wrong.
"What happened?"
I couldn't answer.
I just handed her the document.
She read it.
Her expression changed slowly.
"No..."
I nodded.
"That's what I said."
"Victoria..."
"My mother is alive."
The words sounded strange coming from my own mouth.
Like I was talking about someone else's life.
Emily sat beside me.
"But why?"
That was the question.
The one question that mattered.
Why would a mother leave her daughter?
Why would a woman who loved her child disappear?
Unless...
She didn't leave.
Someone made her disappear.
I went back to Daniel.
This time, I didn't ask permission.
I walked into his office and placed the document on his desk.
He looked at it.
Then looked at me.
"You found out."
My anger exploded.
"You knew?"
His silence was enough.
"You knew my mother was alive?"
Daniel stood slowly.
"Not exactly."
"Don't lie to me."
"I didn't know where she was."
"But you knew she wasn't dead."
A long pause.
"Yes."
The betrayal hurt differently this time.
Because Daniel wasn't a stranger.
He was the man who knew what it felt like to lose family.
And he still kept this from me.
"Why?"
Daniel looked away.
"Because your mother asked me to."
I froze.
"What?"
"She contacted me years ago."
I stared at him.
"Why would she contact you?"
"Because she knew I was searching for the truth."
"And she trusted you?"
Daniel's expression changed.
"No."
A pause.
"She needed me."
Daniel explained everything.
After his father died, he discovered hidden files.
Among them was a message.
From Eleanor.
She knew Daniel hated the Hale family.
She knew he blamed my father.
But she also knew something else.
She knew Daniel was searching for answers.
The message was simple:
"If you want the truth about your father, find me."
"I found her six years ago," Daniel said.
My heart tightened.
"Six years?"
"Yes."
"And you never told me?"
He looked at me.
"Because she made me promise."
"Why?"
"Because she was afraid."
"Of what?"
Daniel answered quietly:
"Claire."
The room became silent.
"Claire knew?"
Daniel nodded.
"Your aunt knew Eleanor survived."
"How?"
"Because Claire was the reason Eleanor disappeared."
The words hit me like a physical blow.
I sat down.
"Tell me everything."
Daniel explained the night my mother vanished.
Twenty years ago.
Eleanor discovered Claire's involvement with Richard Cross.
She discovered the financial manipulation.
The secret agreements.
The plan to control both families.
Eleanor tried to expose her.
But Claire moved faster.
She created a story.
An accident.
A tragedy.
A grieving husband.
A daughter who lost her mother.
Everyone believed Eleanor was gone.
Except she wasn't.
Claire had hidden her.
Because a living Eleanor was dangerous.
A dead Eleanor was only a memory.
"Where is she now?"
Daniel looked at me.
"I don't know."
"What do you mean?"
"She disappeared again."
My heart sank.
"When?"
"Two weeks ago."
Two weeks.
Exactly when my marriage started collapsing.
Exactly when the truth started coming out.
"Claire found her."
Daniel didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
That night, I received a message.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
"Victoria, if you are reading this, Claire knows you found me."
My heart stopped.
The message continued.
"Do not trust anyone she sends to you."
Then:
"Meet me where your childhood began."
I knew immediately.
The old Hale family estate.
I went there alone.
Or at least...
I thought I did.
The house was dark.
Silent.
Frozen in time.
I walked through the front door.
"Mom?"
My voice sounded small.
For a moment, nothing happened.
Then...
A light turned on.
A woman stood at the top of the stairs.
Older.
Different.
But familiar.
My entire body froze.
Because I knew those eyes.
I knew that face.
I knew that voice.
"Victoria."
The world stopped.
I couldn't breathe.
"Mom?"
She covered her mouth.
Tears filled her eyes.
"My baby."
I didn't move.
I couldn't.
Twenty years of questions.
Twenty years of pain.
Twenty years of believing she was gone.
All disappeared in one second.
Then I ran.
And she caught me.
For the first time in my adult life...
I was in my mother's arms.
But happiness lasted only a moment.
Because when I stepped back...
I saw the fear in her eyes.
Not sadness.
Fear.
"Mom..."
She held my shoulders.
"You shouldn't have come here."
"Why?"
Her eyes moved toward the window.
"Because Claire knows."
My blood ran cold.
"What?"
My mother whispered:
"She has always known where I was."
I stepped back.
"Then why didn't she come after you?"
My mother's face changed.
"Because she didn't need to."
"Why?"
She looked at me.
"Because she was waiting for you to find me."
I felt a chill.
"Why?"
My mother's voice broke.
"Because finding me was part of her plan."
Before I could ask another question...
The front door opened.
Slow footsteps entered the house.
My mother's face turned pale.
No.
Not again.
I already knew who it was.
A familiar voice echoed through the hallway.
"Victoria."
Claire.
She walked into the room.
Calm.
Elegant.
Unshaken.
As if she had been invited.
She looked at my mother.
Then at me.
And smiled.
"Finally."
My heart raced.
"Finally what?"
Claire looked at both of us.
"Finally, the whole family is together."
I stepped forward.
"You lied to me."
She smiled sadly.
"No, Victoria."
A pause.
"I prepared you."
"For what?"
Her expression changed.
The warmth disappeared.
"The truth."
She looked at Eleanor.
"The truth your mother has been hiding for twenty years."
My mother whispered:
"Don't listen to her."
But Claire continued.
"Because the biggest lie in this entire story..."
She looked at me.
"Is not mine."
Silence.
May you like
Then she said:
"It's your mother's."
